This beer is copper red in colour with a frothy white head.

It smells powerful grapefruit and rye.

Tastes citrusy, bitter and very hoppy. The rye adds a malty sweet tasting backbone.

This beer medium bodied, smooth with medium carbonation.

Overall this is a very good rye ipa, not quite as tasty as hop rod rye but not far off.

Rusty red color, medium head, clear. Foam cap sticks around and clings to the glass.

Smell hits me while pouring the beer. Big hops and some of it reminds me of the fruitiness found in Celebration Ale. I think I'm also getting rye, as there is another hint of grain involved.

Taste really builds on itself and finishes stronger than it starts, but I'm struck by how well balanced it is for an IpA. I'm not surprised by how perfect the body and carbonation are; SN always nails it. I get the rye the most in the finish where a rustic grain bite complements the hop  bitterness. It's not a hop bomb, but it has plenty of bitterness and is a real pleasure to drink. Hop characteristics are slightly fruity and herbal.

With every new release by Sierra Nevada, I'm further convinced these guys are the best American craft brewers. Ruthless Rye is a success and my favorite rye ale to date. I like it more than the beer it replaces--Glissade--but I would still be happy to see that beer return one day. Will have to buy more of this before it's gone!

12 oz. bottle purchased locally as a single. Bottled on December 16, 2011. Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Light copper with very slight haziness; fluffy 1-1/2" tan head that leaves a patches of thick lacing; a few bubbles rise just beneath the ring of surface foam.

S: Citrus, grass and floral; peppery spice.

T: Sharp pine, pepper & spice; floral; smooth malt, rye; growing bitterness.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation; creamy and smooth; slightly dry finish.

O: Very balanced and drinkable, it is yet another well-made, reasonably priced and widely available offering from a pioneering brewery.

Clear reddish orange in body with off-white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of sharp rye, citrus rind, evergreen, and a hint of nuttiness. Impact: rye, citrus, slightly nutty, mint leaves, pepper and hop bitterness through it all. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavorful and warms the belly. An assault on the palate that works.

ST: 12oz poured into a pint glass. Bottle lists ABV and vintage, but does not have a DBD. Perhaps the ruthless will be able to age and change.

A: Slightly cloudy golden orange brown with a half-a-finger thick white head that sits on top and does not move. The beer leaves thick lacing.

S: Bubblegum, citrus, sour and spicy notes.

T: Spicy peeper and sour notes from the rye meet citrus and bubblegum from the hops. The finish leaves some bitterness and some sour reminder of the rye.

M: Medium and dry.

O: An interesting spin on a traditional IPA, Ruthless still has a large dose of bitter. Though the rye does add some spice and sour notes, the hops still rule over the flavor profile. Many might be surprise at the small, rather than large, addition the use of rye adds to the beer. Hop heads will still get their fix with Ruthless.

Large, four-finger head that settles in a lumpy, domed fashion. Many thin rings of lace as the head recedes; like nothing ive ever seen before. The broth is dark amber, like light maple syrup.

Lots of rye in the smell--very dry, no sugars. Background hop enhances (rather than counterbalances) this aroma. Some grapefruit rind to the nose.

The flavor matches the smell profile. This is a very dry beer--lip smacking. Plenty of earthiness in the malt. The hop bitterness is more pronounced and less "grapefruity", more peppery.

Pours a dark copper with an off white head. Decent lacing on the side of my snifter glass. The nose is rye, hops, spice and a little malt. The rye is in the forefront, and I dig it. The flavor is the same profile, with some fruit coming out as well. The hops/rye are out front on the taste. Feel is malt/hops battle, with a nice bite on the aftertaste. Overall, this is definitely one of the best rye beers I've had. Great job Sierra Nevada. Cheers.

On tap at local Winking Lizard.

Light ruby red elixir served in imperial pint glass. Nice two finger, thick white head, plenty of lacing.

Really nice citrus, grapefruit, orange rind compete with the smokey/pepper rye malt.

Smooth hops up front give way to subtle spice and a hint of freshly picked herbs. Sounds a bit bizarre, but the flavor is really well blended.

Well carbonated, smooth, easy to imbibe.

Another nice brew from SN.

Poured this 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams glass. The body was the color of a bright penny. The head was pillowy and light tan leaving moderate lacing.

The smell was earthy and spicy. Organic, weedy aroma. Rotting leaves (in a good way). Aroma blooms as it warms, very nice.

The taste was peppery with a light sweetness. Grassy, hops bitterness and rye spiciness. Tobacco leaf. Finishes dry. Allowing this beer to warm a bit really benefits both the aroma and flavor.

The mouthfeel was softly prickly with a medium body. Finishes rather smoothly. Incredibly drinkable beer.

2012 edition poured from glass to an imperial pint. Bottled on 12/28/2011.

A: Iced tea in color with slight ruby hues. Off-white head with nice lacing and weak retention.

S: Rye up front with a strong grapefruity hops presence. Slight malt.

T: Well balanced between citrusy/piny hops with bready malt and peppery rye. Grapefruit and orange peel throughout. Very enjoyable introduction of rye into an IPA flavor profile.

M: Very similar to other Sierra Nevada ales. Medium-bodied and slightly creamy with a hops and carbonation presence that provides a nice pang at the finish without drying the palate out too much.

O: Very enjoyable beer. Very good IPA with a great integration of rye = a very good rye beer.

A yellow copper color with a big heap of oatmeal colored fluff on top and great lacing. The aroma has a tart orange/grapefruit theme with some swampy malt funk, perhaps hints of the rye. Nice. The flavor is a nice combination of woodsy swamp hops and earthy malt. Crisp and pungent, it’s a bitter mouthful with a solid bready malt backbone. The hops are raw and outdoorsy, leafy good and it’s medium-light bodied for a solid hop treat. I think I can tell that there’s rye here but it’s an interesting, funkified version, and plenty good.
