A - Clear copper color with a tan head that lingers leaving strings of lace as it settles.

S - Piney hop aroma with a good kick of spicy rye mixed and caramel malt background.

T - Citrus pith and pine with spicy rye and a caramel malt backbone.

M - Medium body, smooth and creamy.

D - One of the better rye beers I have had. The rye is dominant but not overwhelming with a big hop kick.

Bottle from Chevy Chase, about 42 days old.

Pouring a clear deep reddish brown with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and gorgeous lacing, this is a very appealing beer. The nose has quite a prominent rye character, rather rustic, grainy, and spicy with white pepper (not caraway). This pairs very well with the pine and citrus that the hops bring to the table. The hops have a nice blend of bittering and flavor, though not quite as resiny as I'd like. Still, excellent. The palate opens with a blend of the rye flavors and the hops, rather excellently executed. Pleasing bitterness with a blend of citrus peel, pine and a little grapefruit, these flavors work very well with the peppery rye. All dark grain character appears to be quite fully fermented, lending a toasted grain flavor without any real sweetness. Drying on the finish with a blend of pine and rye, there's a little citrus sweetness to go with the pine resin. Medium light in body with creamy carbonation, this is expertly conditioned and is a treat on the palate. Highly recommended, this along with Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye define what a hoppy rye beer can be.

Picked up a 6 pack of bottles tonight. Poured it into an Ommegang narrow tulip pint glass.

A - Deep copper, crystal clear with a thick white head. Leaves a good deal of lacing down the glass

S - Citrus/pine hop aroma. A dank, vegetal aroma in the background.

T - Spicy and sweet up front, with some bready and light caramel notes. Followed by a nice burst of citrus hops. Finished with a dank, vegetal character a bit reminiscent of marijuana. Not sure if its the hops or the rye. Not an unpleasant or overwhelming flavor.

M - Medium bodied. Rye spiciness helps counterbalance the sweetness to keep it from being cloying.

Overall, a nice change from a standard IPA. I'm not sure how I think the vegetal character would keep it from being an IPA I go back to again and again, but it's definitely a unique and interesting beer.

Another wonderfully built beer by Sierra Nevada. They just know how to make a good looking beer. Couple fingers of creamy off white head, clear/bright amber/light brownish copper color. Lots of soapy lace.

Aroma is fresh and very nice. Bready with a nice undertone of light citrus.

Does have the nice rye bready flavor that I enjoy. Drinks a bit more like an APA vs. an IPA, but very nice. Just a touch of the roasted/spice note of the rye and then a dark toasted crusty bread flavor. Actually quite fruity as well.

Very subtle carbonation, a bit slick.

A nice little beer. Not sure I’ll invest in a 12 pack for the house, but perhaps a sixer.

A: Somewhere between amber and copper. Nice clarity. Moderate sized white head. Spotty Lacing.

S: Spicy, grassy, piney hops. Strong component of grain and rye.

T: The hops wash out a bit, leaving mostly a spicy character. This combined with the strong presence of rye gives this beer a harsh/raw vibe.

M: Assertive carbonation + rye + spicy hops = prickly mouthfeel.

O: Can't say I "love" rye beers, but this is no Hop Rod Rye.

Aroma of grapefruit,/citrus. Spicy/peppery notes from the rye. Pours with a copper color, clear. Off white head laces on glass. First sip is a noticable bitterness along with the grapfruit notes. Spicy chararcter is notiable but plays a background in this beer. Would like to see a little more rye character. Bitterness is upfront malt is light and takes a back seat. First impression was not the best but as I finished the pint the mote I liked it.

Enjoyed this stubby bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a clear copper hue with a white 2-finger head that quickly dissipates in to a wispy lace leaving a partial trail down the glass.

S: Hoppy aroma with hints of lemon and pine in the background.

T: Strong hoppy bitter flavor with acrisp rye background. Finishes on the dry side of bitter.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Really good Rye IPA. Nice and hoppy with a good rye background.
