Poured into a snifter

A: Opaque burnt orange (or as my wife called it, "smokey amber." a tan half-finger head; some bubbles. Decent lacing.

S: Citrus, piney hops, grapefruit.

T: A rye/ hop mix that doesn't offend. Grapefruit, peppery. A dry finish.

M: Medium with medium carbonation. Tangy.

O: Very enjoyable. Hops are not over the top. The rye addition really smooths out the taste. Recommended.

Appearance: Deep orange with copper leanings. Head is a dirty white, rocky and drops to a thin cap in short order. Nice clumps of lacing and notches as the beer goes down. Perfectly clear.

Smell: Spicy rye is up front. Grainy. Hops are citrus and more citrus, but offer a nice balance to the in your face rye explosion. Some hints of caramel in the back, but the rye
doesn't let it through easily. Malts are heavy, but they have to be.

Taste: Grapefruit rind mixes with rye. Citrus and rye make an interesting compliment. Spiciness from the rye is aggressive, but not overpowering. Malts bring a nice sweetness to the finish and round it all out with a clean biscuit flavor. As it warms, the rye and hops blend together and create a unique flavor dynamic. It almost comes across as earthy at times. Mint.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body with a moderate carbonation. Delightfully middle of the road.

Overall: One of the most in your face uses of rye I've ever encountered. It's the deft IPA I would expect from Sierra Nevada slammed with a solid helping of spicy rye for added
character. Drinkability runs a little on the low side.

Pours a brownish orange color. A bit thin for something from SN. The head is thick and bright white. Good retention, it's got that classic IPA look where the top falls in on itself leaving a sticky lace in its wake.

You can smell it from across the room. It's all rye. Smells like a piece of rye bread is in a toaster.

I'll start by saying I'm not a fan of rye. I don't care for it in beer and I don't have the tongue for Scottish style beers. I love this. You can taste the chocolate and caramel malts working in conjunction with the rye for a nice balance. It's very balanced until the finish where the hop flavors win out.

Early on it's not much of an IPA. It's got a heavy feel. Then towards the finish, the bitterness kicks in, it becomes lighter, and leaves a sticky coat of hops on the tongue.

Another classic from Sierra Nevada. It's easy to drink, it's got decent alcohol, it's not very expensive. There's nothing not to like.

2012 edition. 12 oz bottle into tulip.

A: very bright, very orange hue. head is frothy and bright white. retention is good as is the lacing.

S: piney hop aromas intermingle with a very obvious rye malt. aroma leads me to believe either cascade or centennial hops were used. *just checked online, i was wrong.

T: assertive hop bitterness up front. a little bit of honey. tons of spicy rye right after and long into the finish. a little bit of pine/citrus bitterness combines with that rye spice.

M: moderate/vivid carbonation level on a very medium body.

D: chewy and flavorful, this brew really combines the right amount of balance between rye and hops. definitely a welcomed addition to the SN seasonal lineup.

12oz bottle into tulip snifter.

Pours a dark orange with a foamy, craggy off white head with decent lacing.

The aroma is of piney, peppery hops, with a very faint earthiness perhaps?

Taste follows the nose, piney and spicey notes. Decent, but nothing too exciting.

A medium body, a good bit of prickly carbonation.

A decent beer. I probably wouldn't have guessed that rye was used. I feel it did add a slight peppery spice, but it could also be written off as hops I would think.

Comes out looking like deep UT orange with a slightly off-white head.

The namesake rye is right up there in the aroma. Basically rye bread. Then some citrus and floral going on.

Not really all that bitter at all. Lots of rye character to this. A little piney and citrusy. Medium, smooth, and dry.

If you want to know what rye is like in a beer this will show you.
