A- Transparent golden/peach colored body with a thin white head that disappears quickly. Almost looks like white grape juice after the head settles.

S- Some citrus, a grainy aroma, spicy Belgian yeast, funk, some other fruits including pear.

T- Almost tastes like a sour tripel. Belgian spice notes come through the most along with some sweet fruit notes. The sour is noticeable at the end, but not a ton of flavor coming through.

M- Very interesting carbonation with a very dry feel. Carbonation bubbles tingle, but don't add a whole lot to the body. Very unique.

O- Good, but not spectacular. A sipper, but very subtle on flavor.

750ml corked champagne bottle poured into oversized tulip glass.

A - Fizzy white head collapses to the smallest ring around the edge. The beer is a light orange shade with a slight haze to it. No lacing left on the glass.

S - Tangerine/citrusy/lemony bright tones instantly. I get a bit of some tartness but no significant brett funk. Maybe a hint of esters. I topped up my glass with the final slurry of yeast at the bottom and it is coming across with more of the tartness and some more of the brett characteristics.

T - Has a delicate malt definition right away. The malt I get seems to be the lightest of caramel malt. The taste is quite dry throughout the whole palate. Earthy and some clove phenols late in the taste. The alcohol warms pleasantly in its dry finish.

M - Nice light body with a good dryness helps refresh my palate. Tingling high carbonation.

O - I found a good amount of complexity in the smell but the taste was tough to define/identify the many nuances. Maybe these flavors were a little muddled but perhaps I lack the capacity to fully identify them. The appearance was nice with a beautiful shade of orange yet with a small head. The smell was a consequence of being a little young in that the brett never really exposed itself yet. The mouthfeel and body reminded me much of my favorite saison, Sofie in that it was dry a light which is a pro in my book. I would much like to purchase another bottle to age a year or two and recomment further on down the road.

Poured from 750ml bottle into Globe glass.

A. Pours a well carbonated 3 fingers of head that disappears quickly. Not much lacing, and retention is pretty fleeting. Color is a dark golden yellow.

S. Lemony, pear, some spices. Has quite a bit of yeast smell to it. Get a BSPA with a lot of the Brett notes thrown in.

T. Interesting. Pretty flavorful, but not in your face. Most of the flavors are more subtle. You get a hint of sour, banana, some clove, a little bit of pear. Some of the earthy yeast flavors are present as well.

M. Medium bodied. On the lighter side of medium. Pretty good carbonation.

O. Seems a little restrained at this point. Not sure if any of the flavors would intensify with this beer over time or not. I can see the Brett flavor becoming more pronounced, but maybe only that. Was kinda let down with this one.

I reviewed this beer on my blog Insight by the Pint, check it out for more info. In short hand I found it to be a delicious beer, it was light yet carried a punch of flavor without having the bitterness of an IPA.

Brux Domesticated Wild Ale, A Russian River & Sierra Nevada Collaboration. A dry and complex Belgian-style ale refermented in the bottle with Brettanomyces bruxellensis. Brewed and bottled by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA, in collaboration with with Russian River Brewing Company.

Caged and cork, 750 ml bottle. Clear, bright amber color, under a slim white head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma: this one will take some time, as it's not throwing out any ordinary flavors or associations. There's some fruit, but no sweetness, no hops, very dry, and none of the typical descriptors for a sour brew come out of this nose. There's some of that horse blanket rearing it's head, now, some of the cat pee shows up, some of the funk.

Taste: lean bodied, short finish, light on flavor. Mild malt character, negligible hop contribution, but the yeast is felt, and tasted. The cat pee returns to the flavor, hints of lemon, dry, yes, again, but , alas, there's very little of anything else going on.

I'll take a minute to read the label. "What began as a mutual admiration between Sierra Nevada's Grossman family and Russian River's Cilurzos has grown and progressed into genuine friendship. Brux began as an idea and has grown into something altogether different. …The liquid manifestation of change over time….Refermented in the bottle with Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Brux will change and develop over time. Copper-colored, dry and complex, with slightly tart notes of green grass, pear, spice and lemon---this ale will progress in the bottle for many years."

Well. damnit, why didn't I read this first? Why did I make the dunder-headed move of actually drinking this bottle fresh and expecting something good, when I should have sat on it for years, to see what happens when it develops? Will it gain flavor, where now it has virtually none?

I'm sorry, but beers should be judged based on how they taste when they're placed on the shelves. This one as it is should be filed under: "meh." No, wait, make that "Blah."

Brux is an attractive gold color. It’s very clear. It takes on a bit of an orange look when held to light. Carbonation looks very active. It produces a soft, white head that rises to about two fingers in height. It falls back to a surface covering quickly. Lacing was definitely on the light and spotty side. Not bad at all.

The nose is good. It’s a mix of earthy, grainy, musky, and slightly funky scents. The funkiness is obviously attributed to Brett. It’s very subtle and reserved in its role. I don’t mind that. Light apple and pear are noted. Some spicy notes are present, but I can’t identify them here. They’re very much a secondary player. Belgian yeast is noted and is probably responsible for the spiciness. Alcohol is a little noticeable, but doesn’t seem overly strong.

The flavor is pretty good. It kicks off with a strong mix of musky, earthy, and grainy flavors. There’s a little funk that follows. The use of Brett is unmistakable, although it does have a reserved impact on the flavor. It’s a little tart, but far from mouth puckering. Belgian yeast is also noted, but seems almost secondary. It adds some spicy notes, but they’re very subtle and leave you wanting more. There’s a little alcohol on the tail, but it’s not warm or hot. Finishes earthy and musky with lesser amounts of funky and spice.

Brux has a body that’s on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is active, but it is soft and smooth. Given that alcohol is masked well, it is smooth and easy drinking. Finishing off a 750 won’t be much trouble at all.

This collaborative effort between Sierra Nevada and Russian River is pretty good, but seems a little tame. Brett is definitely notable, but it doesn’t come through quite as strong as I’d like. As it is, it’s probably going to introduce many to wild yeast flavors in beer. For that, it’s probably just about perfect. There’s enough to intrigue, but not enough to overwhelm. The label describes this as a "Domesticated Wild Ale." Nail on the head.

750 mL bottle, allowed to warm a bit before being poured into my Bruery tulip.

Brux pours a hazy color that falls somewhere between copper and straight orange. There are plentiful tangerine highlights when I hold the beer up to a liht. The head approaches three fingers in height of fluffy, just off-white foam. Head retention is alright, and there's not muh lacing left in its wake. The nose has a fair amount going on, with aromas of straw, pepper, and lemon zest all intermingling. It could all stand to be a little bit more intense though. The flavor profile is nice, and just about in line with what I'd expect a relatively fresh beer that was only bottle conditioned with brett (rather than having utilized brett for a primary or secondary fermentation) to taste like. I'm guessing that the base beer here is some sort of saison, because while the straw and light citrus/lemon notes that open and close the beer respectively taste like the result of wild yeast, the big cracked pepper flavor mid palate is reminiscent of a well brewed farmhouse ale. The body is very nicely dried out, especially for being above 8%ABV, and the carbonation has a very nice liveliness to it. Brux is drinking nicely right now as an essentially clean beer with just a little bit of funk to it. I suspect though that much like Orval, a bit of time in the bottle will turn it into something beautiful and complex.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a pint glass

A: Pours a hazy, orange color. There is a fizzy, off-white head which quickly fades to nothing.

S: Tart and crisp. Green apple, champagne, lemon rind, and mild barnyard must.

T: Champagne is prominent. Sour grape and apple. Strong vinous alcohol flavor, but it is not unpleasant; similar to a dry white wine. Alcohol blends with lemon tart and lactic sour to make a lingering, bitter but mouthwatering finish.

M: Thin, alcoholic and very foamy. With the slightest of agitation, it really foams up.

O: Very interesting. Compare to both champagne and cider with a sour twist.

Pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. In the aroma, sour and funky, yet a touch green. In the taste, a dry sourness, quite carbonated, and it tastes a bit green too. A sour like bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry sourness in the aftertaste. Nice sour and dryness, but a bit green, I want to lay one down for a year or two.

Appearnce: Poured a slightly hazy copper-orange color with about one finger of off-white colored head which dissipated pretty fast. Very effervescent. Not much in the way of head retention and/or lacing on this one.

Aroma: Apricots, Wet Grass, Lemon Rind, Rubber Bands, Kumquats, and faint Brown Paper Bag.

Taste: Dry and fruity up front with hints of dried apricot, lemon zest, as well as some grassy characteristics (follows the nose). The carbonation fizzes on the tongue, helping to wake up the taste buds. The tart flavor is present throughout, but it was at it's most dominant towards the back-end. Still, it's not so sour that it makes you pucker or anything. I'm getting more fruit on the finish which goes well with a lingering dryness.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with medium-high carbonation.

Morey's Bottom Line: I think that this would be a great introduction into the world of Sours. It's funky, but not too funky (at least not yet). It's tart, but not puckering. As much as I enjoy bolder sours, I liked this beer quite a bit. Alcohol is hidden well too. Cheers.

Pours a golden straw color with a honey hue. The pure white head is pillowy and is fed by a constant stream of bubbles. Good retention.

The aroma is oaky with a green apple tartness. Some musty white grapes and hay. Lightly peppery and lemony.

The taste is of a pale malt, somewhere between crackery and bready. I am picking up some rust notes as well. There is a light fruitiness to the brew; green apple and lemon. The beer has an oak like flavor from the brett and some hay. A bit of a grassy bitterness.

The feel is light with prickly carbonation which leads to a crisp feel. Good balance between sweet, tart and bitter. Drinks quite well and very refreshing.

Not the most flavorful wild ale that I have had. The yeast provides some flavor but not as much as I have seen in the style. It might not have strong flavors but is damn drinkable.

750ml bottle - $13.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, deep amber-gold body with a craggy, rocky, white head that peters out fairly quickly but never quite vanishes.

Smell: Varied, mingled, sweaty notes of tart pears, Italian bread crumbs, finely-ground spices, oily citrus fruits, lavender, pickled ginger slices, and mildly funky Brett.

Taste: Golden barley, gently toasty with sweetish hints of well-spiced sugar-spice cookies. The sweetness dries out almost instantaneously. Embellishes of Chiclets and Sweet-Tarts midway into the flavor. Citric oils with some phenolic Brett character coming through, but it's never overtly wild. Peppery spice and some fleeting wild yeastiness on the sparkling finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Highly carbonated with a downright crackling mouthfeel.

Overall: I would say this could greatly benefit from some time away to let that lovely wild character develop. Brux, you are in TIME OUT.

A- Pours a very nice copper color, slight orange hues, looks very similar to what I see in some IPA's and IIPA's. Very good color in my opinion.

S- Smell is pretty lacking on this beer. It has some hints of citrus or sourness and tart, but overall just seems it is not as complex as I would expect, and just appears to be missing something.

T- Same thing I found on the smell, I get on the taste. The taste has hints of sour, faint tartness, and a finish that is slightly bready or yeasty. This beer just appears to be missing something, the Brett probably needs some more time to mature.

M- Mouthfeel is quite smooth, and overall very good, this is one of the best things about the beer, as it is quite lacking otherwise.

O- Overall a slight letdown for the price point, but going to let the my others get some age on them and revisit again. This has some great potential, but at this point it is just not living up to expectations.

750ml bottle poured into my Russian River tulip. Bright orange amber in color with a thin, fizzy head to it. The head faded pretty quickly but a steady stream of carbonation bubbles continually rose from the bottom of the glass.

The aroma has a very nice subtle funk to it. I get some sour citrus notes with both orange and lemon flavors coming out. Pale, bready malts give it some balancing sweetness. Very nice aroma to it, everything comes together very well.

The taste shows a little more of the juicy citrus coming out. I get some sour notes up front, but it turns a little more funky towards the finish. Some hop bitterness helps give it balance in the finish. The funky, sour flavors are very modest but add some great depth and complexity to the juicy citrus flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. Overall, it was a really nice beer. Everything came together very well in it. It was easy drinking, refreshing and well balanced for the style. The funk and sour flavors were a little more reserved then I normally would like, but overall I thought it was a very good beer.

Pours a very warm orange/gold. Not much head or lace lowered the rating.

Apple and pale malts lead off the smell. Small ammount of funk in the back. Being that this is not aged and the Brett is added to the bottle, I'm not surprised.

The taste is very interesting. Sour apple and Brett start it off nicely. The sour fades into the slightly bready malts next with a mineral and bandaid kick near the middle. There are some hints of pear and earthy hops as well. Goes down very easily.

I think this would age very well. Can't wait to pop one in the cellar. Wouldn't label it as a wild ale at this point, more of an experimental farmhouse ale. Liked it quite a bit though.

Pours with monster head. Aroma of sour funk and yeast. Flavor follows with nice sour, straw, grass. Some sour grape and pears, a bit of dry grassiness. Crisp and refreshing with strong carbonation. Worth a try. Sierra Nevada seems to be branching out and doing so rather well. I enjoyed this one a lot and it was super super drinkable.

750mL bottle, poured into a tulip

The body sits a slightly hazy golden orange color with a one finger cap that fizzled away rather quickly. Some stray lines and dots of lace.

Heavy brett straw-like funk with apple skins, grapes, and damp grass. There's a little bit of sweetness that is part grainy and part fruity.

Pears, apples, grapes, and a bready sweetness lead off with straw/hay funk through the middle and into the finish. The finish is dry and funky. This beer truly showcases the Brett and showcases it well.

Medium body with mild carbonation. A touch prickly with none of the 8.3% noticed at all.

This was a solid beer that really showcases Brett. This by no means blew me away, but I did enjoy the beer. Solid.

Figured I'd give it a go. Looks pretty lame in the glass, quick fading head, murky honey color, bland to my eyes. Picking up some honey, clover, spice, and esters on the nose. You would certainly have to be fermiliar with brett to find it in the aroma. The brux pops a little more in the flavor. A little dusty and farmy with hints of horse sweat. Spices, phenols, a nice little package. Very dry as it should be. For a beer that is clearly trying to be something like Orval this falls short, sorry guys.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer is a rose-tinted orange coloring, both opaquely clouded and steadily carbonated. A filmy ring and island of film decorate the surface of the brew. Aromas of fruit and floral blend together for an inticing funk. Currant, raspberry, lemongrass, jasmine, and many other characteristics blend together to assault the sense of smell. Flavors of citrus fruit and apples are first onto the palate, with a backbone of cloves and banana subtly in the background. The flavors almost lend themselves to a cider style of drink. Very light and effervescent in mouth, to the point of foaming if you move or swish at all with the tongue. There is an acidity feel and taste that touches the tip of the tongue initially, and also presents itself to the back of the tongue at the end of the palate. Pear and parsley/basil spicing in the aftertaste, with a filmy, quick, slightly frothed finish. Very unique and interesting beer, and much more mild overall than some other beers utilizing Brett. This would make a good transition for people new to Wilds, or even sours.

Poured from a corked bomber into my Ommegang flute

A- pours a crystal clear golden orange, two finger fluffy white head, spotty to little lacing present

S- mmmm funky brett, dry crisp fruit, apples and pears, a lemon scent brings up the tail, sweet candi sugar, smells like an awesome wild ale

T- interesting, i'll start with the fruit, pretty close to the nose with pear and apple flavors, slight lemony citrus as well, bready malt, dry finish, not a whole of sour or tart mixed in,

M- medium body, dry and crisp finish, very nice balance of carbonation, couldn't detect any alcohol either, very nice feel

O- overall not a bad beer, i was just really excited considering RR's history with sour beers, i picked up another bottle and i'm gonna let it aged for a couple of years and really let that brett develop, i think in the long run this could be an extremely tasty beer, right now it's just kind of a fledgling

The beer is orange and mostly clear, showing only a mild haze. Atop the beer rests a thin white head. The aroma offers apples, malt, brettanomyces, light spice. The flavor is ok. A bit malty, with some well water character. Brett is there, but this beer seems to play it safe. A tiny bit of tangy citrus with an apple juice finish. Maybe this will improve with age, but even so, this is a step (or more) behind many other notables in this genre.

Appearance: 25.4oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. Colour is a bright hazy orange-brow. Half-finger head fades to a puffy film. Lots of visible carbonation.

Smell: Spicy yeast and bubblegum are first and foremost. Aside from that I get a tart mixture of citrus, malts, and something along the lines of figs.

Taste: Tart is the prominent flavour, although not overpowering. I honestly cannot pinpoint a single familiar flavour in this - I'm lost! Yeast, spice, malts, metallic, and slightly musty are words I would use.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with a pack of carbonation. Clean, crisp, and dry.

Overall: This is my first AWA and it has certainly opened my eyes regarding different flavours. While totally different than the usual, I'm excited to further my explorations of this style.

Slightly hazy deep yellow color with spotty lacing.

The brett nose is undeniable. Funky hay, grass, and young in ripe white fruit.

The taste is mildly tart, but with a fruity sweet balance. Pear and apple with hay.

It's very dry with prickly carbonation.

It's a pretty solid offering from two great breweries.

I finally got a hold of one of these bottles, I've been looking for it since release. Poured from a corked and caged 750 into my Hennepin glass.

A: A wonderful golden orange color with a just off white one finger head. Glass lacing is spotty.

S: Loads of lighter fruit smells mix with some heavy brett straw, hay and some sweeter toffee notes. Brett really stands out.

T: Follow the nose. Fruit flavors of pear, apple, lemon and some darker fruits of sweet cherry mix with loads of toffee and bready sweetness. The grassy straw and wet hay flavors of the brett really come out at the end to lead into a dry and slightly tart finish. Not a sweet beer, but not a sour either. Nice mix of both, enjoyable.

M: Medium mouthfeel that is dry and a bit prickly. Carbonation is spot on and I didn't get any alcohol for the 8.3 abv. Very nice.

O: I think this is a winner of a beer. I love the 2 breweries that collab'd on it, so what is there not to like. I don't get the lower reviews as I thought it was a fantastic and very drinkable beer that works on all levels.

If you like brett, you'll like this beer. Some complain it's not tart enough, but it's not meant to be a sour. For me, this was a perfect blend of tart and sweet which makes the beer oh so drinkable and enjoyable. I'll take one anytime, please keep making it.

750ml corked & caged bottle into a (512) Anniv3rsary goblet.

Classy-as-all-hell, the packaging is immaculate. The appearance doesn't quite live up to the bottle, as the apple juice golden body is thin and spritzy. An off-white head retreats all too quickly to a scant ring of foam. The aroma turns things around easily, with a delicate, Brett-rich nose of white grapes, apple skin, musty barn, and hints of cut grass and malty nuttiness.

The flavor cuts across the palate sharply with an effervescence that leaves behind note of apple rinds and tangy, musty Brett in its wake. Not a lot of depth to the flavor yet, and the overall palate comes off as largely disconnected from the aroma--something Russian River wilds rarely do. Brux rolls across the tongue in a sea of large, unruly bubbles that seem to multiply as the sip lingers. Unfortunately, I was not all too impressed with this release. Unfortunate because I love both brewers, and unfortunate because this may be one of the only times a Russian River beer with be available on the Texas shelves...hoping that Brux gets better with a little age on it.
