ST: Corked and caged bomber bought from Small Batch Liquors in Denver. Served chilled from the fridge in a 0.3 liter New Belgium tulip glass.

A: Rustic amber color with slightly hazy body. Highly carbonated but head is very transparent.

S: Sweet, lightly peppered smell, with a tart apple finish.

T: Distinct Brett Brux taste: tobacco, dry, and highly crisp (probably due to high effervescence). The body is very light and taste is pretty light in complexity.

M: Highly effervescent, crisp, and light bodied feel. Gains a leather complexion upon warmth.

O: A nice Brett-like beer. It might have been served too young, as bottle notes it gains distinct flavor upon age. I would casually recommend it, but not worth actively seeking.

750mL bottle into snifter. cant make out this bottle coding.

A: hazy. orangey blond body. head is bright white and has some big bubbles. head has good retention, lacing is super minimal though. pours pretty vivacious initially.

S: not nearly as tart as I would like it. a little sweet sugar as well. virtually no hop component.

T: similar to the nose, some horsehair and barn, but limited. a little bit of grain on the back end. no bitterness. not lingering or starting. hop flavor is nonexistent.

M: pretty vivacious bottle carb. medium body.

D: two suggestions for this brew: a) let it warm before drinking. b) age. age this bottle for a couple of years. well maybe that is a stretch, but give it time for the Brett to take hold in the bottle and develop its flavor and aroma.

A: Poured into a teku glass there was a big 4 finger head with lots of dead space making it rise and fall quickly. After two more pours the glass was filled and left with no foam at all. The liquid, a briliantly clear woody orange color with the occasional bubble popping up from the bottom.

S: Mild fruit candy esters, moderate tart aroma that is reminiscent of lemon zest and sour candys (warheads).

T: Very low bitterness with no distinguishable hop flavors coming through. The malts are mildly bready yet sweet. The highlight flavor in the beer, however, is the complex wild yeast flavor. The sweety horse hair, but in a good way, descriptor is accurate. Very animal, protien like flavors coming through. Also reminds me of over rippened fruit (pear, apples).

M: High carbonation and a dry finish combined with the tart aftertaste leave a strong tingling sensation on the tongue that lingers.

O: For my 100th Beer review on BA I thought I'd crack open a cellar beer. My first Brett Brux beer and I now understand the sweety horse blanket descrptor. A decent beer overall but not my thing overall.

A: It has a hazy golden body with a fizzy bubbly white head that seems to be going nuts. Popping all over the place in a myriad of bubbles. Despite the persistent bubbles, the head fades quickly leaving absolutely no head or lacing.

S: I pick up what smells like cherry Starburst, followed by what smells like soap, then a funky musty aroma. Lots of sour fruit smell.

T: There's more of that funky mustiness. It's that old house quality, but in a flavor. There's a bit of sourness, but it's an initial burst of sour and doesn't have any follow-through. It literally seems to depend on the size of the drink. A sip doesn't seem to deliver enough flavor for me to enjoy this beer. When I take a big gulp, there's much more presence to the beer. There's a cottony flavor and a bit of wood in there too. Kind of like sucking on a tooth pick. I didn't think it was especially great tasting. There really wasn't much aftertaste.

M: The mouthfeel leaves much to be desired. It feels empty, plain, and insipid. It isn't completely dry, leaving this light flavorless coating on the palate.

O: Overall I thought the beer was just "okay." It has just enough flavor to feel interesting, but could use more. It just doesn't feel dry enough either. That's probably the biggest detractor to a beer like this. The bottle recommends aging, but I have no idea how old this bottle is to begin with. It's worth drinking, but I can't say that I would be all that excited about aging this.

Bottled sometime early summer 2012, placed in cellar for one year. Served at fifty degrees, a gentle pour into a clean tulip glass produces a large three inch white head, which crackles away noisily towards the bright golden beer that lies beneath.

Smell of delicate fruit, lemon, grass and a slight earthy funk.

Mouth puckering and tart during the first sip, not very sour, this sensation is finished with the second sip. Dry and not overly complex, the taste is peppery with hints of grass and lemon, similar to the nose. A lingering astringency is present, tannins? This is not to be confused with the slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Characteristics of the brettanomyces are evident, earthy funk and gentle sourness.

This beer is on the thinner side, carbonation is spot on for the style.

I think Brux is successful, however, not worth its original price tag. Still see this on store shelves and the price has dropped. I may be inclined to pick up another bottle and see how it progresses with another year in the cellar. My advice to anyone that has been holding onto a bottle would be to give it time if you want more from the brettanomyces bruxellensis. For food pairing I would recommend pear tart or a Roquefort salad.

2012 vintage poured into tulip

A: Golden-amber body with a white with orange-tinged 2 finger head. Tons of visible carbonation which makes quite a nice noise.

S: Strong funky, earthy, barnyard hay smell that’s not unappealing. Hints of citrus and spices as well as well as a general white wine like aroma

T: Grass, hay and earth: dry with hints of orange, apple, pear, banana and white grapes. Tiny bit of hop bitterness hiding in there that helps with a bitter finish.

M: Medium to light body with lots of lively, tingling carbonation.

O: I didn’t have this fresh, but I assume time has only made it better. Brett lends its nice flavors and aromas here in a very drinkable beer. A good collaboration brew that I’m glad I picked up and cellared for a year. If you can find this be sure to try it.

Had this one a while now, time to give it a try.

Appearance. Pours a nice orange gold with two fingers of foamy cream coloured head.

Smell. Woody and vinous, some light orchard fruits and fruity yeast phenols.

Taste. Vinous again with a bit of light orchard fruits, a bit of sweet malt and those fruity phenols I was smelling.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, strong carbonation.

Overall. Not a bad brew, but I wouldn't buy another bottle.

Russian River / Sierra Nevada Brux: "Domesticated" wild ale, 8.3% ABV, highly carbonated, smoky haze, highly active head, quick dissolve; Appearance: dark hazy yellow, peach skin; Smell: tangerine, peach skin, subtle acid, very subtle banana pudding; Mouthfeel: fine and nice carbonation; Taste: long sourness in the background, peach skin, old leather, banana peel, peach pit, floral note; good.

Poured into a pint glass.

Cellared this for a year plus in hopes of some Brett development.

Bright golden color, persistent plume of racing carbonation. Long lasting head of foam that settles but never really dissipates.

Aromas of dried pineapple, flinty wet stone, and wet hay. There's Brett in here alright...

Dry, very light residual sweetness, slightly tangy. Flavors of wet hay and funky yeast character though it's fairly restrained. Some minerality, tangy unripe fruit, leather, vague spices, mild aftertaste of clover honey. Medium bodied and a little over-carbonated for my tastes. Flavorful and approachable, Brux falls on the lighter side of the Brett spectrum, and that's ok. It's enjoyable for what it is.

Poured this into a straight sided tulip glass. Nice orangey/gold color with tons of bubbles. Lovely white bubbly head on this beer. Smells wonderful. I'm getting a ton of white grape aroma and that slight funk I love so much. Spice and grassiness also present in the aroma. Taste is slightly less tarty that I was expecting. Sweet grass, nice peppery spiciness, sticky pear, white grape and a nice dryness to back it up. I have been enjoying this beer too much to really write much about it; well this beer and some Mraz. Mouthfeel is light on the tongue, the carbonation makes it dance around your mouth like Tinkerbell in a light evening gown. I'm going to go back to drinking and singing. Good chat BA.

Hazy golden appearance. Smell is pleasant with sour and fruity notes. Taste is very light and almost watery. Very little sourness. Intended to develop over time and I guess a year isn't long enough for this one. Very vigorous carbonation. Overall a well crafted beer but not one that is all that amazing at the moment.

It pours a hazy golden color with very thin white head.

The aroma has some nice citrus, funk and fruitiness to it.

The taste was dry at first with some light bitterness but then the sour kicks in and rounds out the flavor.

The body was light and lively.

This beer really is maturing, the fruitiness and tart flavor have become much more pronounced in the last year.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip.

A: Cloudy, golden hue. Giant foamy white head, settles quickly. No real lacing.

S: Yeast, raspberry, white grape.

T: Yeast and fermented raspberry.

M: Light body, slightly fruity, funky aftertaste.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Nice head, no real lacing though. Yeast and raspberry make up the nose. Likewise with the flavor profile... fermented raspberry is prominent... light grainy body otherwise. Overall, this is a good quaff.

Brux. Domesticated Wild Ale. ~8% ABV. 750ml bottle - corked. Sierra Nevada - Russian River collaboration. Couldn't resist grabbing off the shelf.

A - Foggy golden tainted with orange, soapy white head that dissipates rapidly, heavy carb.

S - Pear, wild yeast, hints of lemon, white wine like.

T - Like bitting into a crisp apple-pear, semi sweet but finishes dry, some spice rises thru the carbonation - lemon peel like. Easy to drink - although none of the flavors really stand out - kinda blah.

O - Pretty well balanced - Clean - Crisp, Base of the beer seems to be missing - relying solely on the Brett for flavor, not worth the price tag.

A - Golden, minimally orange, with a solid lasting head

S - Fruity, with less funk than I expected based on previous reviews

F - Fruity nose quickly gives way to brett and mild hops. Not really tasting the grass so much, and not so tart as I like my sours.

M - Moderate to heavy carbonation gives way to a soft dryness.

Overall: tasty and quite complex. Admittedly, I love all sours and can't give them a bad review. That said I'm glad I tried it but probably won't buy again.

Procured by the world's best neighbor's, shout out to the Moser Family, while on their trip back to the states. Poured from the bomber into into a TommyKnocker's taster tulip...

A - Dark cloudy orange with a booming head of white that holds ground stolidly.

S - The aroma gives citrus and pear with a brett boost.

F - The flavor is thorough and mild. Begins dry with rose hips, belgian yeast, and mild hop bitterness. Further on the funk of brett becomes more apparent and the bottle descriptor mentioned green grass at some point, agreed.

M - A very lasting stickiness accompanies the medium body and light carbonation.

Overall a balanced, light, refreshing "wild ale". I understand the domesticated portion in the name, beautifully executed ale. Would recommend.

I bought this last year and waited until a buddy came to town to open.

Appearance: like every good Russian River brew. Hazy golden amber.

Smell: Citrus with a bit of Brett funk.

Taste: sour hoppy liquid goodness. Not sure if it is better than last year but it aged well in my fridge.

Mouthfeel: soft and well balanced.

Overall: this is a very good brew from two great breweries. The Brett was lighter than other Russian River Brew offerings and is a great beer to introduce someone to the sour style. Sierra Nevada did their part and put together a good beer with RRBC. Usually, I'm not a big fan of Sierra Nevada, but this one is outstanding. If you can locate a bottle, this is worth a try. I'm going to buy all the bottles my hometown store has left. It will be interesting to re review in another year.

This has been aged for about a year. Hazy orange color tons of carbonation flowing through this. Head is white and fizzy reminds me more of a soft drink then a beer in appearance. Nose is sweet... orange, candied fruit no real hops present but then again after a year not expecting a ton either. Flavor is very different from the nose as there is a nice tartness with a backing of that funky brett. I have had a few brett beers before and this one seems to tame them well while using them for their intention of adding a very different flavor. I'm sure the year has also helped tame them. One thing that is immediately present on the mouthfeel is all that carbonation. Stings the tongue along with the tartness to give an experience you don't normally get from a beer. I like it but don't know if I'd rush back to the feeling. Overall I really like this beer but probably wouldn't buy it again due to the price point. I am just getting into the sour side of beers and can't wait to try some more.

After a year:

This (still) pours an orange-auburn with a light foam.

There’s a great nose on this. I picked up orange zest with a light bit of developing Brett funk—wet hay, light citrus zest, musty blanket, some hints of things to come.

The flavor developed quite a bit of depth. Comes off peppery with some orange zest and a light funk rounding it off. There’s a tight effervescence on this which keeps it light.

After a year’s time on this I have to say that this beer developed some terrific nuances. It doesn’t hit any extremes, nor does it come off as such, but what it does offer is a fantastic blend of flavors—some emerging, some present when first tasted, and some new developments.
Shared this in the company of good friends. Wish I could have another.

OG Review:

Picked this one up in bottle form but I had the opportunity to try it on draught too. So it will be fun to compare my notes down the road.

This poured light, clear, golden and capped by a tremendous avalanche of cloudy white foam—but as it rested not a trace remained. The aroma has a whisper of Brett breath. Very muted, very nuanced, and it is not evident without really searching for it. Some floral notes complement it. The flavor is nicely rounded with some slight sweet notes and a floral finish.

This is exceptionally smooth and can only get better with some time.

After a real champagne pop from the cork this pours a radiant yellow, cloudy, with a bumptious head that settles down quickly to a cap. Minimal lacing. On the nose it’s heavenly sweet, brett, funky with a strong biscuit malt character underneath and a little tart breath from the grassy hops. On the palate it’s smooth despite the heavy carbonation. It’s got orange, a little medicinal alcohol and a sour bite that’s alive and dry. Good balance between the sweet nose and the dry drinking. Truly wild and fabulous.

Gold, solid gold color with big bubble dome head erupting from my initial pour. Wave tube shaped skim of retention.

Coppery wheat, mint aroma with a initial twang of sweet/sour brett. Brett smell fades after a few minutes in the glass.

Tastes very minty. Almost menthol. Dry, mint seltzer is pretty comparable. Not very bretty.

No sir, I don't like it. I dumped it, my wife dumped it: the dreaded double drainpour.

Poured a clearish brown-red with fizzy head due to intense carbonation on top of an aroma that one could describe as moderately funky or slightly sour with touch of bread malt. Has some sour/funky fruit appeal and touch of citric hops and the Brett is in there but not overpowering. Light-bodied and sharp, this beer will prickle the tastebuds the entire time. Good balance and mix of some citric, lemony hops, clove and pepper spices, sour apple and pear fruits as well as some minor sugary malt sweetness and a touch of breadiness as well. Unfortunately, as I progess with the beer the flavors seem to die out and give way to more of the funk and sour charateristics of the beer. A good beer but it became a chore to finish off the whole bomber.

A: Pours a hazy honey to apricot in color with some moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation and some light orange highlights. The beer has a two finger tall fizzy off-white head that quickly reduces to a couple of medium sized patches of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Overall there is a light aroma with notes of brett and barnyard funkiness. Just a touch of light fruits as well - white grape and pear.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of pale and slightly grainy malts with moderate amounts of light fruit (white grape, pear, and just a hint of peach). Light notes of brett funkiness towards the finish which gets a touch stronger as the beer warms. Light amounts of sourness with a touch of lemon citrus.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with heavy amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This was a very good beer but I was hoping for a little more tartness/sourness in this one (considering the Russian River portion of the collaboration). Easy to drink and the alcohol is well hidden.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving only a thin Ayer of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of brett are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the taste, the taste has light flavors of barnyard funk and sourness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't that bad but I was expecting more sourness from a wild ale.

Poured from 750ml bottle

A: Pours a nice orange color with crazy bubbly white head that disappears almost immediately. Lots of bubbles that continued for quite some time. No lacing at all.

S: Some citrus mixed with earthy funk. Grassy notes mixed with a bit of sourness.

T: Light fruity flavors like lemon, raisin with a bit of tartness mixed with an underlying funk. Very dry and perhaps a bit bitter.

M: Extreme carbonation. This one bubbled almost all the way down. Reminded me a bit of champagne. Very dry finish, light and refreshing. Alcohol content is hidden well.

O: Very easy to drink, and very enjoyable, but was hoping for a bit more sour notes and complexity to flavors.
