On tap at Tony's Darts Away about a month ago...

SN Red wine Barrel Aged Ovila Dubbel

A- tap pour to snifter produces a 1 finger tan head resting on a amber body. Head recedes quick leaving almost no lacing. 3.5

S- awesome smell of red wine, tart cherries, and sweet malt. 4.5

T- similar to the smell the red wine barrel aging provides a tannic and slightly tart cherry taste to the base dubbel. The sweetness and tartness play off each other excellent. 4.5

M- lighter carbonation as expected and
Medium body. 4

O- a wonderful beer. I could drink a lot of this stuff! 4.5

A very meh beer. The smell was off-putting and actually quite bad. The taste was good if you plugged your nose, but overall this beer was hard to enjoy.

No date, assumed fresh.

A: Pours a deep, dark brown with red highlights. Good sized, fizzy and fluffy light brown head. Head fizzes out fairly quickly. No real lacing that I can see. Decent retention at least.

S: Mild and surprisingly sweet wine aspect. Bready with hints of oak. Barrel presence isn't overpowering. Pretty mild aroma overall in fact. Tannic; almost leathery.

T: Fairly substantial wine up front. Very fruity and mildly tannic to boot. Loaded with grapes and raisins. Just the lightest touch of tartness and then strong breadiness in the middle kciks in. Decent astringent oak in the finish. Lightest touch of toffee and maybe even caramel in the finish. Lingering tannins and grapey wine between sips.

M: Mild, medium body. Smooth.

O: Huh, very interesting brew. Aroma is mild but the flavor is quite good. Honestly, most dubbels do nothing for me. Even the very best are merely "good" to me. Most are bland. This one has a great layer of complexity from the wine that really brightens it up. Not tart or sour, in fact it's a pleasant sweet grape flavor that really offsets the bready malt nicely. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

Found this at the brewery. Haven’t seen it around the East Bay so not sure this is ever making it down to the Bay.

Pours a cloudy brown/burgundy ale with a nice size off-white head. No lacing to speak of.

The aroma has a nice wine element to it. Which it should considering where it was housed. Light funk. Cherries. Raspberries.

The taste is rather lacking in flavor. Not getting much of anything. Bland. Light wine but mainly just dull tasting. Actually reminds me of a very, very flat cranberry juice. Some bitter notes. Not sure what I’m supposed to be tasting here. Spicy finish with a biting-back hope bite at the end.

Mucho carbonation here.

Overall I, sadly, was not impressed. The wine barrel didn’t do much for this other than the nose. Love the look of the dark burgundy label, but the flavor was just lacking. I can’t blame it on lack of carbonation either. That was there!
