Fantastic ale I just had tonight with dinner (hearth in nyc).

Poured dark brown with a faint head (server poured slowly down the side) lacing present on the glass, but faint.

Aroma of dark cherries, pears and Sicilian oranges.

Flavor had all the aroma smells plus a creamy/vanilla taste. Very little bitterness or hop aroma. Fruity without being crazy.

A fantastic beer.

A: Pours a glowing amber with a creamy, lingering white mousse. It's as attractive as any Montegioco beer.

S: Calvados aromas are heavy on the nose, with toffee, cream, vanilla bean, cider vinegar, and hazelnut scents all taking some time to introduce themselves. Beautiful, complex, and inviting.

T: Notes of heavy cream, vanilla bean, calvados, leather, chestnut, hazelnut, cider apple, wine grape, nougat, and toffee dance across the palate. The finish is gorgeously rounded and smooth with nut, vanilla, leather, toffee, and calvados notes.

M: Full bodied, smooth, silky, and initially slightly oily, though it dries out around mid-palate. Carbonation is very gentle; in fact, it's barely noticeable. This is dangerously drinkable for such a complex brew.

O: This is one amazing ale. As usual, Montegioco's eye for detail and unfettered creativity have produced another stellar concoction. A winner in every sense of the word.

My notes started to get shorter here. This beer pours a hazed red color. The head is thin, and is made up of large, thin bubbles. The aroma is acidic with notes of sour cherries, and woody notes.

There are flavors of cherries, dark fruit, and woody notes. The sourness is there, but as an undertone. The finish has a mild bitterness. This beer is dry and crisp with low carbonation.

Despite not being as sour as I normally like I thought that this beer was a good balance between a puckering Flanders Red and a milder beer.

Poured from a 12.7oz bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet.

A: This bottle featured a pretty neat crown cap/plastic cork hybrid that let out a mighty pop when opened. Pours a gorgeous hazy honey color with an eggshell colored head that took forever to recede and left quite a bit of lace in the glass.

S: When first opened, this had pretty strong aromas of funk, tart cherries, and unripe peaches. As its' temp came up a bit, the funky sourness waned a bit and aromas of pear, vanilla, buttery oak, and green apples came about.

T: Funky and tart at first sip. Gradually the flavors take on more of a sweet fruity edge without ever completely letting go of the slight funk that keeps it interesting. Loads of oak, tree bark, orchard fruit, lemony hops, and a touch of vanilla. The barrel flavors are awesome.

M: An exquisite exercise in dry, fruity, funkiness. Elements of sweet fruit, tangy cherry, and dry & toasty oak.

D: Pretty fantastic. An excellent mixture of funky, tart, sweet, dry, bitter, and mellow. Loads of balance and layers raise the drinkability score to near perfect levels.

The cap pops off explosively from the bottle and immediately starts to foam up, I am quick enough on the draw though that I don't lose a drop as it all ends up in my large Tripel Karmeliet glass. A very soft pour starts out with a two-finger thick head, but the ample carbonation has it creep past four-fingers in height as it barely crests the top of my glass. As the head slowly subsides it creates a cavernous sink hole off to one side, ample lacing and varied surface. The beer is a red plum color that shows a murky, red, light amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells lightly tart and fruity; reminding me of a zesty, bright, fruit focused red wine. Aromas of soft lactic tartness, strawberry and blackberry fruit notes that are backed by herbal notes of green tobacco, subtle sage, perhaps a touch of dried earthy-oregano, woody black pepper, toasted oak as well as malt derived notes of toasted bread flour and whole grain crackers. This has a really interesting, complex aroma to it; I like how the Barbera has added bright fruit notes and also that the oak is fairly subtle and supporting in the nose.

Still quite effervescently carbonated; the beer foams up quite a bit as it hits my tongue. The beer has a light tartness to it up front and the oak infuses itself towards the finish with toasted, woody notes, ample spicy oak and even a bourbon like spiciness. There is a nice fruitiness here, it is not as prominent as it is in the nose, but still adds a nice berry component to the flavor that combines with the lactic tartness and helps to balance the oak influence. There is a nice tobacco edge to the finish that combines with toasted malt character and toasted oak notes quite well. There are some other herbal notes that seem to be derived from some still hanging on hop character; subtle notes of sage, a touch of menthol and some noticeable pine infuse the finish along with a clean, hop bitterness. This beer is quite quaffable in its fairly light bodied texture. It is complex enough though that it really isn't a beer that one would quaff and there is some tannic texture and heft here as well as a touch of malt body that keeps this from being thin in any way.

As the beer warms up the berry like fruit notes come out a bit more and the beer becomes more balanced between the fruit and oak components. The malt really comes out more and more as the beer warms up, it never gets dominating, but I really like the toasted malt, whole grain cracker note that it develops in both the aroma and the flavor. This is a great marriage of beer and Barbera barrel, both contribute quite nicely to the overall effect of this beer; the interplay of toasty malt, subtle oak, and Barbera derived berry notes and even residual hop notes all are quite tasty. I really like that the oak spiciness and heat doesn't get to be too much for the rest of the beer; in fact this beer is really quite balanced in its marriage of flavors.

Picked this up at West Lakeview Liquors after trying it a GI tasting event a few months ago. Served in my Kuhnhenn tulip.

A - Weird plastic cork/cap combo thing that I've never seen before. A hard pour yields some big bubbles - Bon-Chien level carbonation here (i.e. almost none). Murky unfiltered apple cider body.

S - Funk, buttery oak, vanilla, red wine, woodland berries, lactic sour notes, maybe a touch of spicy, peppery, alcohol peaking through. This should probably be listed as an American Wild Ale, as that's what it mostly resembles - reminds me a little of Vagabond.

T - Taste is more tannic and salty, with tons of oak and spicy wood flavors coming through. Red wine, oxidation, herbal leafiness, pepper, maybe some tobacco. As it warms a bit more sweetness peeks through, but nowhere near as much as in the aroma. Not quite as balanced and complex as the nose.

M - Well, there's no carbonation. Wine-like texture, very dry, with some light residual stickiness, very soft and smooth. There's some warmth at the back end of things.

D - Not as drinkable as the various barrel-aged iterations of the Bon-Chien Grand Cru, as the alcohol isn't as well hidden. Still, it's quite enjoyable, albeit as a sipper as it took me about 45 minutes to work through a 375ml bottle. I'd be even more interested if Montegioco let this get even more funked out and added a bit of carbonation.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle.

A: Pours a cloudy sunburst orange color with lots of floating particulates. A cream, dense white head sits on top and leaves behind sheets of lacing.

S: Very nice funky smell includes sour green apples and lemons with touches of oak. There is a profound woodiness with notes of blackberries.

T: The taste is quite different from its aroma. It starts off a little citrus-y and moves on to hints of woodiness. There is a big butterscotch finish.

M: It is somewhat chewy and finishes with a dense feel. There is a light crispness from the citrus notes that cleanses the palate.

O: I couldn't really get a grip on this one. It is very complex and seemed to evolve as you drink it. All I know is I like it and I want more.

First off, I love the cartoon/drawing on this label.

Pours a clouded orange touched brown with a decent creme head. Nose is honey, figs, slight tones of sharply sweet wine, muted wood. I am wondering if it will open up more as it warms. Flavor is tangy sweet. I am getting unusual/unique hits of wooden fruit acidity. Must be the barrels. Well, I am sure that it is. As time goes on, I really start to get more intense wine character. Such an odd mix of clearly earthy toned wine mixed into an ale. Almost takes on a milky kind of thing. Not lactic like so many American produced Belgian styles might bring, but milky. Maybe even thicker like cream. Feel is pretty thick on liquid. Carbonation is fairly prevalent. A sipping beer. Its intensity brings a lot to the table. Some of which I don't think I would be able to fully appreciate without really knowing more about the wine the barrels were originally aged in.

Be in the mood for this one and ready for something different. And heavier.

375ml bottle

Love the label design.

Dolii pours a ruby orange brown color with a fluffy medium sized peachy/brown head. Very tart nose, with notes of orange peel, apricot and a woody feel. Vinous notes, pale malt, and a leafy hop bitterness. Very nice, good balance and complexity, the 8.5% abv is well hidden. Worth the price tag.

Bottle thanks to Beerlando. Pours a cloudy light brown with a thick white head. Aroma is lightly sour with some sweet wine notes and earthiness. Flavor has some sour cherry notes, light oak barrel, and a nice sour and tart background. Not acidic at all--very nice palate. Quite enjoyable!

This is Demon Hunter matured in Barbera wine barrels for over 6 months.

Appears a golden orange with a fluffy, off-white head that slowly fades away. Tons of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of tart cherries up front with fruit & oak, vanilla, caramel, cream, and pears.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some flavors of standout cherries, cream, and oaky vanilla.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, tart, oaky, woody, with light abv present.

How served: 12.7 oz hard red foiled cap with a built in plastic mini corked bottle which was poured into an Augustijn tulip.

Notes: 2009 Vintage

A: This bottle opened with a weak hiss. The pour revealed a murky deep mahogany color with only a few tiny bubbles on the surface.

N: The nose was musky, with hints of oak, dark fruits and acidic.

T: The taste was oaky, woodsy & musky with notes of cherries, prunes and raisins. There was a very light sweetness balanced against a mild tartness, neither overpowers the other. The beer finished dry with a slick, smooth warming mouthfeel.

M: This beer had a light to medium body with no carbonation.

O: Overall I like and enjoyed this beer. Also for a beer which poured flat it was quite drinkable. If this beer had a little more carbonation I would have bumped up the scores!

A- Lovely cloudy golden orange. Bubbly head with moderate lacing on glass.

S- Very sour initially, with hints of green apples and lemons, moves into grapes and strawberries with some oak, and also pleasant floral notes.

T- Much different than I anticipated by smelling it. Deceptively sweet, but lethally smooth. Has a butterscotch finish, but is refreshingly dry despite this. Although not what I expected, undeniably pleasant.

M- Low carbonation, but remains somewhat light in body despite the rich flavors.

O- Smells like a geuze, tastes like a quad, drinks like a saison. Really interesting beer. I wouldn't call it a favorite, but I will revisit this one indefinitely.

Seriously earthy with lime, basalmic, and brine, immediate comparisons with Orval insue...

Dolii Raptor pours iwth a semi-froathy decantment of medium amber, strong golden color with a creamy egg shell off white head that retains very well and laces equally. A strong and refined look throughout.

Sharp and pungent aromas of citrusy lime, earthen scent, old woods, slight horse blanket, and an overall musty, dusty, acidic note. Cidery and light vinegar begin to form impressions of Sour Ales.

Sweet flavors of ripe cherries, mild honey, and bready pilsner malt are surplanted by a sharp briney taste of lime, salt, sandalwood, balsamic, cider, vinous, and tanic flavor for a very complex and varying balance. The crazy balance of characteristics seem part beer, part wine, and part vinegar but with a sweeter side that seems of sour candies.

Lightly creamy with a medium mouthfeel, this ale pulls in early acidic sourness for a sharply refreshing and lightly tanic astringency that causes a powdery and dry finish with a linger of English bitters and lime.

All those briney notes make me think of Orval but the balance, sweetness, and sourness seem to polorize the beer and limits its togetherness. A tasty, tasty beer it is, but Orval it is not.

Opened with coworkers. It pours a dingy auburn in color, medium in body, with a slight white lacing around the glass. The aroma is very funky and full of brett and bugs. It has a nice tartness. The flavor is so soft and somewhat sweet. It is malty first and you get some slight red fruits with trailing coconut as it fades into the after taste. The tartness is there yet subtle, but it's still nice, it's just that it could be stronger. It makes you wonder if they used American Oak, even though they're Italian. It is really light in body and drinks really smoothly. It could have more body though. The flavor is nice but doesn't live up to the nose. It is drinkable but to me it's overpriced. Overall it's a nice beer but not overly complex and definitely not worth $13 a bottle.

Pours a dark, hazy golden amber/chestnut brown color with a two finger frothy off white head. Good retention, slowly fading into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.

Earthy oak aroma with hints of vanilla as well as some crisp light fruit and vinous dark fruit. Slightly funky with hints of grape and strawberry.

Vinous medium body that is slightly funky/tart but not acidic with hints of dark fruit and earthy oak. I'm picking up hints of cherry, strawberry and grape as well as some subtle vanilla. Dry finish.
