From tap to pint, leftover from Toronado's Kern Night during SD Beer Week

A: Jet black in color, indistinguishable from a porter. Small, sticky head touches everything with lacing.

S: Roasty, spicy up front. More malt-forward than Id expect from a Kern offering, but citrusy hop notes are quickly in tow. The bouquet is layered and spicy, like cayenne or cumin spice, although the brewer is here and claims that no spice was added.

T: The spicy notes are definitely there, maybe because I was expecting them, but I'm feeling a warmth around my lips. Roasty, slight astringent malts play against a sweet citrusy undertone, fairly well balanced. I can't help think there wasn't a dash of cumin or cayenne, but maybe it's just the way the hop-alchemy worked out.

M: Medium mouthfeel, plenty of scrubbing bubbles to keep things fresh.

Kern's never made a bad beer, at least not commercially available, and this may be one of their more unique and interesting brews. I'd like to have this down the road, from another batch, to see if I'm still getting the same spicy nuances.

On tap at 38 Degrees in Alhambra, CA.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus fruit and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with nice citrus forward hop qualities all around.

On-tap at 38 Degrees in Alhambra, on to the beer:

Black bodied and topped with a half-inch of head. The head looks creamy, and it leaves creamy lacing around the glass. I didn't get much aroma out of this beer; I'm hoping it was a fluke. I just smelled a light roast. However, the taste more than made up for the lost aroma. I often find the India Dark Ale in general to be rough with its bitter hop and malt, but this one was very smooth. Good roasted dark chocolate base doesn't get bitter, and hops bring notes of pine, mango, and melon to the palate. It's medium-full boded and very easy to drink.

I miss seeing Kern River beers nearby. Thanks to 38 Degrees for bring a few of them on-tap, and I'm glad to have discovered this gem.
