22 oz bottle, no freshness date discernible, poured into a nonic pint

A-Pour yields an impressive 2 inch white head that recedes at a snail's pace leaving behind a magnificent lacing along the sides of the glass. Deep yellowish orange in color, perhaps a shade lighter than copper. Head finally settles to about a half finger and remains for the duration. Excellent head retention and cling. A great presentation.

S-Whoa! Have some grapefruit there. Lots of citrus fruit aromas from the hops along with some less prominent floral notes. Perhaps a little mint in there also. Very little - if any - grass or pine. There a little biscuit from the malt, but it is very subdued behind the wall of hop aromas.

T-Surprisingly sweet at first, but this doesn't last. Immediately followed by grapefruit, mango, and apricot citrus fruitiness from the hops. Malt sweetness tries to fight back, but it never really stands a chance as the finish yields to the hop bitterness. If you like your IPAs fruity, this is the one for you.

M-Medium carbonation, ever so sticky in the mouth. Body is on the lighter side of medium. Pretty average for the style.

D-Good IPA that goes down easily. This one is definitely about the hops, but it's not unbalanced. Very fruit forward though. My only complaint is that the taste is somewhat one dimensional with all the emphasis on the citrus fruits. It's definitely a solid IPA and very drinkable, but IMHO it falls just a bit short of the top tier IPAs.

A: Pours out a hazy orange. Can see little floaties. This one is unfiltered, it would appear. Darkish in color. Gives off a finger and a half off white head. Retention is moderate. Lacing is absolutely wonderful. Carbonation appears to be minimal, but it's hard to tell amongst the hazy and sediment.

S: Got the West Coast part down. Big pine, grapefruit and spicy tropical notes. Also a bit of spiced tangerine/orange. Malt comes through with some caramel and lightly nutty sweetness. Am getting a slightly catty/onion undertone from the Simcoe, as well.

T: Big hit of grain up front. Initial surge of lime and kumquat pith lead the hop charge. These transition mid palate into more standard IPA territory of pine, some herbaceousness and a touch of grapefruit. As it warms, the malt begins to open up, but never takes on any sweetness. Instead, it's a grassy, grainy style of malt. Bitterness asserts on the finish, bringing back bitter citrus peel, pine needles and a floral characteristic. Finishes extremely dry, bordering astringent.

M: Oh, so incredibly light for an IPA. Crisp on the palate, but with fairly subdued carbonation.

O: Very well executed, but somewhat lackluster. Lacks the complexity and depth of flavor of the top tier IPA's. Still, glad to have tried it.

Pours a light amber orange with a half finger of white foam.

Hop resins, orange, lemongrass, herbal.

Biscuity caramel malts, herbal hop resins, citrus fruits.

Light-bodied, medium carbonation, crisp, bitter resins.

Overall, good but not really "outstanding."

Big thanks to stupac2 for hooking me up with this Want! No freshness info. Enjoyed on 08/26/11.

A - Pours a hazy amber/gold color with a good 1.5 finger just off-white head. Leaves good lacing with large bubbles.

S - Very citrusy aroma with some tropical fruitiness as well. Some nutty, sweet malts in there as well.

T - The taste is great, it just seems a little muted. Very balanced up front with some citrusy bitterness and the bready malts. Toward the back, the hoppiness becomes very grapefruit-like. Finish is one again balanced with the buscuity malts and citrusy bitterness.

M - The mouthfeel is pretty good. Medium bodied with pretty high carbonation.

O - Overall, this is an excellent beer. Just wish it was a little more flavorful. Can't wait to compare it to Citra.

Look: Cloudy golden amber with a thick white head. Lots of legs and quite nice lacing

Smell: One pungent brew with an explosion of Amarillo and simcoe hops right out of the bottle! Huge piney citrus notes with a sweet malt making itself ever present. Piney hops, lime, lemon, white nectarines, some light orange blossom, mandarin oranges, more pine, sweet malty notes round up the rear but are just barely there covered by more pine. Smells fantastic!

Taste: Much more balanced then the nose lead on as the pine and citrus notes meld quite nicely with a sweet malt leading to a quite nice balanced profile. Getting pine, nectarine, lemon notes, tangerine, sweet malt, earthy hops, with another wave of malt to smooth things out. Quite tasty.

Mouthfeel: Resiny hops stick to the teeth with a medium body and a quite bitter finish that dries very slowly. Very nice.

Overall: One outstanding brew. The hops are obviously the main show here but they at balanced really well with that malt to make one tasty IPA. Loving these simcoe and Amarillo IPAs and I think more brews should use this awesome pair up! Excellent IPA and one I wish I saw more.

Bottle thanks to jmadrigal2. Poured from 22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a two finger fluffy white head.

Smell: Bright grapefruit and tangerine aromas, bitter piney hops anad a malty character at the end.

Taste: Bitter piney hops, grapefruit, lemon zest mixed with a pretty nice malt taste that doesn't take away from the hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and it has a dry aftertaste.

Drinkability: I have had this beer a couple of times now and it is a very good IPA, that I wish made its way out to PA without trading.

Pours a hazy orange-ish color with yellow hints and an off white head. In the aroma, mellow grapefruity hops. In the taste, pine hop to start to a citrus hop with a nice small dry maltiness. A hop bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry orange citrus hop in the aftertaste. Quite nice west coast IPA.

The beer comes in a peach/orange color. The aroma is citrus fruits and malt. The taste is delicious citrus fruits with a medium malt backbone. A great example of a west coast IPA

22oz bottle received as an extra in a trade with bkrefetz...thanks for this one! Poured into an Otter Creek tumbler.

A - Pours a deep amber orange color, mostly clear...just the slightest of haze. a finger of cream colored head forms and sticks around for a brief time before falling to a thin skim coat and a ring of bubbles around the edge. Sticky lacing is left all down the sides of the glass.

S - A nice, pleasant combination of malt and hops with good balance. Solid malt backbone with some sweet caramel and toffee character. Hops are citrusy and fruity...grapefruit is the predominant hop aroma. Well balanced IPA.

T - A very enjoyable IPA...sweet and caramelly malt with citrusy and grassy hops on top. Firm but not overpowering bitterness. Balance is the key in the flavor as well as the aroma.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Enough malt to give it some heft, not quite "chewy" but definitely has some roundness to it. Hops leave their mark too leaving a nice resiny coating that leaves a pleasant grassy bitterness behind after the swallow.

D - Good overall IPA. A good companion for the evening. I would definitely order another of these at a bar if I was fortunate enough to find it in the first place. This is my second experience with this beer...and, honestly I really didn't "get it" the first time around...figured I had a bad bottle and didn't review it. Glad I got an opportunity to give it a second chance.

Consumed on 9/12/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer appears a medium orange with a creamy one finger white head. Good retention and some lacing.

The nose is primarily grapefruit, with lesser notes of pine. It's slightly floral and slightly sweet. The malt is subtle and crackery.

The taste is of slightly bitter grapefruit and a little pine. The beer has a low medium level of bitterness that seems to increase in the dry finish. The malt is crackery and not too noticeable and doesn't provide any sweetness. The beer is light medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a very dry and sticky mouthfeel.

This is an enjoyable and easy drinking IPA. Good stuff, and at $3.99 a bottle it's a steal.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Received in trade with mrmiles. Thanks.

A - Pours a hazy golden orange with ample off-white head. Sticks to the glass well.

S - Citrus, pine, hops explode in a very fragrant bouquet.

T - Similar to the nose. Citrus with a mild bitterness.

M - Light to medium mouthfeel with an ample amount of carbonation.

O - I was satisfied with this beer. I found it to be enjoyable and would have it again given the opportunity.

Sampled from a 22oz bottle purchased at The Best Damn Beer Store in downtown San Diego.

A - Golden with a slight haze and a big white head of large bubbles. It leaves some decent lacing behind.

S - A burst of citrusy, floral and piney hops with some toasted malt.

T - A moderate citrusy and piney hop flavor with a firm bitterness. But it fades a bit at the end. The start is much better. The malts provide a foundation but don't stand out.

M - A slightly creamy consistency with a moderate carbonation.

D - This one is easy to drink but not especially compelling. I enjoyed it but given the other choices in CA, this one doesn't stand out.

A:Hazy orange-amber body. Moderate sized off-white head which quickly crashed down to a skim. Some spotty lacing left behind.

S: A pleasant tropical fruit style IPA. Getting a bit of orange and grapefruit but not a whole lot of layered complexity.

T: Like the nose, its fairly one dimensional ... but again, a nice flavor. Orange and grapefruit dominate. A surprising bit of general malty sweetness edges its way in.

M: Medium bodied, with soft, gentle carbonation. Not particularly bitter. A dull, muted finish that isn't quite dry enough for my liking.

D: Not quite tasty enough for the name "Just Outstanding." I'd put it in the good to very good range. When it comes to tropical fruit IPAs, Sculpin sets a high bar and this brew just isn't on that level.

poured from a bottle into a Tulip glass, color is a beautiful orange-copper, typical of an IPA, with a decent tan head that drops quickly but leaves quite a bit of lacing. The aroma is very nice, smells of cirtus and a dash of pine. Not quite as strong as I was expecting but good none the less. the taste was also very good, nice bitterness, some sweetness and the cirtus hops. Overall a very solid IPA.

A: Pours a nice vibrant orange with a nice tall white head. Little retention with some nice spotty lace.

S: Wonderful earthy hops. Citurs, Pine, and caramel malts.

T: Toffee sweetness, with ample amounts of citrus and pine. Light floral notes with hints of tropical sweetness.

M: Medium in body, smooth, tasty for sure.

D: Good, a solid and drinkable IPA no doubt.

A - Pours a nice golden/amber hue with a rich creamy two finger head. Looks very inviting.

S - nice west coast citrus hop profile, but the aroma is a bit muted. Not the hop blast was hoping for. A bit of malt in the background, but mostly hops dominate here.

T - tasty citrus/tropical/a bit of pine here. While tasty, it is a bit muted like the smell. I was looking for more of a hop blast again.

M - Nice thick and creamy mouthfeel. Coat nicely and reminds me of the thickness of Pliny.

Overall this is a tasty, hop forward IPA that falls short of being excellent (or outsanding in this case). I'm happy to have tried it but there are much better IPAs to be had.

22oz bottle thanks to mattolesh, much appreciated. Nice orange color and a very invitingly hoppy smell to this beer. The flavor leaned more towards amarillo hops for me, lemony and yet bitter like aspirin. A very tasty IPA and I'd cop fresh bottles if I could.

Thanks to Gorefiendus for this bottle! Poured from a 22oz. bomber into a Russian River Belgian glass.

A: Hazy golden light brown with a 3-finger head that quickly dissolves. Sticky lacing is quick to follow.

S: Mainly piny with a little honey and floral character in the background.

T: Resembles the nose; very piny with earthy hops. This is the type of IPA I like - not many fruity/citrusy notes at all.

M: I was sort of disappointed here. I thought there would be a chewier/stickier mouthfeel with the way this beer looks.

D: This category makes up for the mouthfeel. A perfect IPA to have on draft - it wouldn't fill you up after the first one!

Overall, my type of IPA, but nothing outstanding (no pun intended).

Taste: opens with some citrusy hops that blend into a lighter crystal sweetness. backend moves towards pine and floral hops.

Mouthfeel: lots of bitterness and stickiness. fairly light to medium body. lingering bitter

Overall: a very good ipa. love the hop character that the taste takes on. great hop combo.

Pours a clear amber color with a really tall frothy off white head. Head is as tall as the beer in the Alchemist glass I'm using.

Smells of juicy American hops, some orange citrus, some floral notes, a bit of bitter pine.

Taste is mostly sticky bitter piney hops, very little citrus. Strong malt backbone, a somewhat sweet bready character in the mouth but finishes mostly bitter.

Carbonation is really good with a full mouthfeel, very refreshing.

Not quite "outstanding" but definitely a really good IPA.

A-pours a hazy grapefruit pink with orange edges, the head is dense and creamy, slightly off white, huge retention and lace from what must be a hop bomb.

S-the nose is quite big, it lays a nice malt foundation, caramel and doughy malts, hops take over, pine, citrus, grapefruit, and honey.

T-the flavor is much different, the caramel and dough malts are there but much less pronounced, a strong presence of yeast comes in before the hops and detracts from the flavor slightly. herbal hops, honey, and a fair amount of grapefruit. strong bitterness that lingers throughout with the yeast flavors.

M-medium to light body, syrupy texture, strong carbonation, slightly grainy on the palate.

D-this is a very tasty IPA, huge flavors rivaling that of many DIPA's. the nose has an amazing balance of malt and hop, the taste seems to have a stronger yeast component that falls short of the very tasty nose. Still a very good beer!

Just tried a fresh bottle for the first time in several years. Aroma is outstanding. Tastes about as decent as I remembered. I'm a little surprised by all the praise for this beer in a crowded IPA market.

Poured 22oz bottle into snifter. Very clear apple juice color with a soft white 2 finger head. Leaves a ring and nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is both sweet from the malts and tropical from the hops. Amarillo was a good choice and a favorite of mine. A bit of grapefruit zest for some bite on the flavor with sweet notes of caramel malts. Tropical flavors of passion fruit and guava add depth to the taste. Both refreshing and dry with a clean and medium feel. Very tasty IPA.

22 oz bomber, no bottled-on date, poured into a tulip glass. Picked this up just 3 days after it arrived at the store, so it should be pretty fresh.

A- Slightly hazy golden color topped with an inch of fluffy white head, nice retention, leaves tons of thick, crusty lacing.

S- Grassy, fruity hops, grapefruit and pine resin, it smells nice but pretty standard. Not picking up much malt aroma at all.

T- More tropical fruit and pine, fruit flavors of grapefruit, orange and pineapple. The hops are moderately bitter, not as strong as I was expecting for a West-Coast IPA. Light caramel malts provide balance. Finish is bitter and grassy with a bit of peppery spiciness.

M- Medium-bodied, medium to low carbonation, smooth feel with a dry finish.

O- A solid IPA, it's very drinkable but the hop flavor isn't quite as bold or vivid as I would have liked.

Thanks to nightwing002 for this as a great extra!
A: light amber/orange. Ridiculously great thick dense head and lacing.
S: nice tropical fruit from the amarillo but the hint of garlic and onion from the simcoe ain't my thing. light caramel/honeyed malts are nice.
T: really well balanced. Medium sweet with a smooth hop bitterness. Juicy hops.
M: medium body. I like the well-carbonated frothy mouthfeel.
O: lose the simcoe, add citra, and this would be killer.
