look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Very dark amber beer with a medium sized white head. This thing is very close to being brown. Clear beer despite the darkness.

Smell is strongly of hops, mainly the northwestern type. Strong pine and eucalyptus scents. Caramel malt and a wisp of wood and smoke make up the rest of the scent.

Starts out Sweet then woody. Strong grapefruit flavor, fairly bitter in the mouth but the malt keeps up with it. Lasting bitterness and astringency in the back of the throat.

Mouthfeel is full.

This seems a bit unbalanced like they extracted too hot and picked up an astringent note. Think I might be asking too much drinking Firestone Union Jack all the time.

Pours a cloudy orange amber color with a full finger foamy eggshell colored head that fades fairly quickly. A reasonable amount of Belgian lacing in its wake. The smell is good. It has an aggressive floral candied pineapple character. Adequately carbonated, the mouth feel is medium bodied. Full flavored, the grassy pineapple hop taste is balanced nicely with the sweetness suggested in the nose. The piny notes linger significantly. A nice drinker in a sea of options.

Pours a amber with a nice thick off white head. The nose on this is pretty unspectacular. Getting some very faint pine and light malts. Taste of pine gum, a little grass and malt also citrus pith. A bit of a unpleasant off taste with this one, maybe just my can but I'm getting a lot of tannins. Medium body and a dry finish.

bottle poured into my New Belgium globe. Thanks to irishgurl4 for this.

Hazy orange body with a white head on top. Smells nice and hoppy, a big citrus hop aroma hits the nose, a bit of juiciness and some sweet notes as well. Tastes more balanced than the nose would suggest. Citrusy hop flavors up front give way to a big pale malt back bone. I wish this was a little less balanced. Medium body, slightly sticky a high amount of carbonation. Easily drinkable. Worth trying for sure. I enjoyed this but wouldn't go nuts trying to seek it out.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #63 (Apr 2012):

LOOK: Dirty peach; thick, creamy white head

SMELL: Intensely floral, orange grove, catty, mint, hemp seed, vegetal, clean alcohol, cookie dough

TASTE: Piney hop, chocolate mint, fresh citric fruits, bready malt backbone, warming alcohol, very juicy, hemp, faint cattiness, yeast, fresh-cut grass, aspirin, caramel, hoppy finish

“Just Outstanding” and “The Name Says It All” might look cool on a label, but it's a ballsy stretch and honestly, we simply expected much more. In a world saturated with IPAs, this one is actually “just good,” which ain't bad either, but it ain't all that.

They should change the name of this one to "Just Another IPA"

No visible dating on the bottle - pours a nice copperish color with little head and leaves very little lacing - Sweet sticky caramel is the predominant smell - Taste is just that... Caramel with some earthy pine and floral notes - smooth drinking with a slightly sticky aftertaste - not bad, not great, not likely to buy it again, but not going to turn it down if handed one either...

22oz bottle that Doug opened up. Thanks man. Poured into a Bell's snifter today, 3/11/2014.

App- Dark brown-caramel, a bit hazy and opaque. Very strange for a west coast IPA. Comes with a one finger white head, fair retention and fair lacing.

Smell- Caramel, toffee, grapefruit, lemon and a bit of pine. More on the malty side. Don't know how old this is, but the hops are certainly there.

Flavour- Not particularly interesting. Caramel malt backbone is here, a bit of grapefruit and mango, with a nice pine backend that is fairly bitter. Not mindblowing by any stretch.

Mouthfeel- Nice creamy, medium bodied, not watery at all. Quite bitter even for the style, coats the tongue in pure IBU. In fact, the bitterness stands out the most in terms of the character of this beer.

Overall- Decent IPA, nothing mind-blowing or special. I can find IPAs like this fairly easily here in Madison, Wisconsin. Good extra, certainly nothing worth trading for.

Poured from a 22-oz. bomber into a pint glass. Color was light caramel. Lots of head, probably three finger widths. Cloudy white lacing on the top. Lots of film on the sides, circular and cloudy.

Smelled bitter hops right away. Got some lemon and grapefruit, but the bitterness sill came in hard. Toward the end of the sniffs I got some sweet floral notes.

Tasted pretty similar to the nose - a bit unbalanced and more bitter than anything else. Citrus hops, but not as strong as the nose. Probably grapefruit more than anything else. Some spices, too. Maybe pepper?

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.

I don’t know if outstanding is the right term for this beer. Ordinary would have worked better. Just an OK IPA.

Thanks again to DearthVader for another West Coast IPA - my first beer ever from Kern River!

A: Fairly clear with a touch of haze from the cold, golden-orange body with a seriously amazing head - rocky, foamy, pure white which naturally left some sticky and splotchy moderate lacing. A great looking beer.

S: Blasts of citrus hops up front on the nose. Dry hopped with simcoe and amarillo, yes, you can tell. Orange zest, grapefruit and some wood elements come through also. I did have to stretch a bit for some of the aromas, it wasn't terribly muted but could more pungency.

T: Bitter sticky hops coat the palate immediately and unfortunately, sort of numbs it for the other flavors I know are there. There is a slight malt base here but not enough of one to combat the bitterness this beer brings. Floral hop notes and a slight twist of lemon round everything out and leave a resiny hop bite coating.

M: Medium-bodied, good carbonation, maybe a bit thin but that makes this very easy drinking.

This is a nice showing for Kern River for a baseline American IPA. Personally, I think if a stronger malt base was present it would have provided a much better balance for the aggressiveness of the hops.

Thanks to Solomon420 for a very generous trade!

Pours a glowing amber with two fingers of head that leave some good lacing on the way down.

Smell is an extremely juicy blend of citrus and floral notes. This one is pretty damn potent and inviting. I even ended up with foam up my nose because I kept wanting to get closer and closer.

The taste doesn't quite have that same effect. I like the hop profile but it isn't quite defined enough, nor is it balanced with the malts. I'm getting more of a bitter-hop-mixed-with-water type taste. Still, its not bad and there aren't any unpleasant flavors present.

Mouthfeel is medium but a tad too thin for the style. Although this goes down quite smooth, drinkability is lacking due to the the less than glowing flavor profile. Not a bad brew by any means, but a lot of IPA's are starting to blend together for me and it takes something special to stand out from the pack.

Cloudy orange brew with a white head that leaves a bit of lacing. The smell is very bitter with some sweetness and fruit behind. The taste is slightly sweet with a little fruit and a ton of bitterness. Pretty solid beer.

Surprisingly pulpy orange appearance; very nearly opaque. Modest head production and retention.

Hops are quite restrained on the nose, but there's no hint of staleness. Slightly tropical, slightly citric, and a bit of both pale and caramel malt. This beer is hiding its goodness from my nose!

Plenty of flavor on the palate, though. Initial notes of grapefruit and pine, but a big juicy wave of melon and mango quickly follows. There is indeed a good deal of malt balance, as well: slightly grainy caramel, brown sugar, and sweet pale malt.

Easy drinking and smooth. Lively with little sting.

A beer like this would be hard pressed to live up to its name, but it's still very tasty.

Pours a cloudy amber- light brown with an off white head with decent retention.

Citrus and tropical fruits are prominent followed by some pine, light caramel malt sweetness and some bread.

Sadly, the taste isn't as lively as the aroma. I will start off with the positives. This beer is very well balanced. Unfortunately I felt that the taste was somehow muddled or subdued, and there was some lingering harshness. The bitterness hit late and in waves, as opposed to steady crescendo reaching curve. Faint orange citrus flavor and pine along with some light mango, bread and caramel. As far as prominent flavors go, its fairly one noted with some supporting players that must have had their lines cut.

The mouthfeel was a little disappointing. A little more carbonation and body would have helped this beer out. Felt a little thin to me.

Overall a solid IPA, just not one of the better ones I have had. Drinkability is there, taste is another story. Just outstanding? Possibly. However based on the bottle I had it was Just OK.

A - Pours a nice golden/amber hue with a rich creamy two finger head. Looks very inviting.

S - nice west coast citrus hop profile, but the aroma is a bit muted. Not the hop blast was hoping for. A bit of malt in the background, but mostly hops dominate here.

T - tasty citrus/tropical/a bit of pine here. While tasty, it is a bit muted like the smell. I was looking for more of a hop blast again.

M - Nice thick and creamy mouthfeel. Coat nicely and reminds me of the thickness of Pliny.

Overall this is a tasty, hop forward IPA that falls short of being excellent (or outsanding in this case). I'm happy to have tried it but there are much better IPAs to be had.

22oz bomber split with oglmcdgl, thanks to marisatheyounger for the assist.

In the pint glass, Just Outstanding looks pale golden with some orange accents, maybe a touch of straw. A sturdy 3 fingas of dense bright white foam reminding me of alesmith IPA, nice clunks.

Smell is str8 up floral with citrus in the back. I believe some chinnook and centennial are in here for effect. a nice malt base. Pretty potent smell coming from this EyePEEAAA.

I was takin back from the first sips, i thought it was me, but the hop juice just is not this beers forte. More floral in nature than a outright hopbomb. A nice mix of floral hop taste with earth and a touch of grain with a fruity middle drowned out by a nice malt base that is biscuits and bread, low amounts of sweets like caramel and the like.

Feel is at about medium with a lively carb that approaches bitey yet not quite. Not oily in any way im digging the feel. The only thing outstanging was the scent. The taste kinda let me down but all in all this beer is a good look.

Five ounces poured into a pint glass. Bomber shared with four other guys.

3.5 A: A hazed medium orange color. One finger of frothy off white head with below average retention.

4.5 S: Wonderful bouquet! Tons of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit. Flowery as well. A bit one dimensional, but damn does it smell nice.

3.5 T: Moderate bitterness. Orange and pineapple again, but not nearly as vibrant as in the nose. Good, but just good.

3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Active carbonation. Smooth, but could be creamier.

3.5 D: Not bad, but really doesn't hold a candle up to the DIPA. Not enough hop flavor to make up for the lack of maltiness. A more apt name for this beer might be "Simply Average."
