Served in a Duvel Tulip. Thanks Kyle2k10!

Lingering 1-1/2 finger cream head atop a semi translucent orange yellow body. Lots of sticky lacing left on the glass. Only loses points for clarity.

Aromas of fresh picked pine needles, tart tangerines and grapefruit. More fruity and floral than piney. Some Simcoe and Amarillo in there.

The taste is even more smooth than Russian River Blind Pig, which I just had prior to this beer. No harsh bitterness here whatsoever. A complete balanced flavor profile of tangerine and grapefruit with more pine and some caramel on the tail end. Very fresh and delicious. I want this recipe! I envision West Coast pine needles being mashed with a mortar and pestle along with tons of tangerine & pink grapefruit segments and then drizzled with caramel.

Moderately low carbonation. Addictive mouthfeel. Soft and lush. If I died today and had to pick two hoppy beers to drink before my last couple hours, I would alternate between sipping Just Outstanding (more citrusy) and Pliny the Elder (more piney). These are two similar, simplistic beers and they both deliver.

Big thanks to stupac2 for hooking me up with this Want! No freshness info. Enjoyed on 08/26/11.

A - Pours a hazy amber/gold color with a good 1.5 finger just off-white head. Leaves good lacing with large bubbles.

S - Very citrusy aroma with some tropical fruitiness as well. Some nutty, sweet malts in there as well.

T - The taste is great, it just seems a little muted. Very balanced up front with some citrusy bitterness and the bready malts. Toward the back, the hoppiness becomes very grapefruit-like. Finish is one again balanced with the buscuity malts and citrusy bitterness.

M - The mouthfeel is pretty good. Medium bodied with pretty high carbonation.

O - Overall, this is an excellent beer. Just wish it was a little more flavorful. Can't wait to compare it to Citra.

Picked up a growler at Kern River Brewing on the way to a camping trip up River, sure glad i did!

Pours a orange golden amber, with a decent head.
Wow what a nose! This is one of the best aroma's I've had in awhile [must not have had a green flash in awhile?]
pine grapefruit.

Great taste Hoppy but a malt backbone, pretty well balanced
Wish this was closer to home!

The Growler was perfect and the carbonation was good
the staff was very nice, and this place didn't pitch a fit with ordering an IPA for a growler like *some* places....
Will be going back some day

The beer pours a glowing orange-copper in color and has a quarter inch of thick foamy white head that leaves a medium density of ragged and sticky lacing.

The aroma is wildly hop forward, with succulent tropical fruits, melon and a bit of pineapple juice. There is some spiciness and zestiness in the background, flittering around just enough caramel malt to keep this thing from blasting off into outer space.

The taste is the same massive array of hops as the aroma, the flavors are fresh, fruity, lush and spine-tingling. The finish is slightly sweet, slightly dry and with a satisfying amount of bitterness reminiscent of drinking fresh grapefruit juice. The aftertaste is lingering notes of tropical fruits and grapefruit. The bottle does not lie when it states, "The name says it all," because this beer is a just outstanding West Coast American IPA.

A: A vibrant and hazy golden with an orange hue, minimal off-white head.

S: Juicy citrus, slight hop dankness, and more fresh citrus. Guava, grapefruit, pineapple, and stone fruit.

T/M: Smooth medium body with moderate carbonation. Weak and mild malt flavors with a little bit of a subdued hop presence. Very subdued overall -- not up front with anything. There is a slight hint of apricot juiciness. The finish is very slightly malty with a mild bitterness.

O: Really quite nice all around. This beer does not do anything loudly, so it's hard to absolutely love or hate anything about it. Really drinkable, but also really forgettable.

Kern River: Just Outstanding IPA (No date) (Tasted 01/28/10)
22 oz. bottle, poured into a cervoise goblet.

Extra from Alen, thanks man!

Appearance: Pours heavily hazed golden verging on amber with a fluffy off-white head that leaves a solid sheet of lace on the side of the glass.
Odor: Focused hop aroma reeks of tropical fruit, reminiscent of mango, pineapple and tangerine. There's definitely a rich, bready "sweet" malt aroma supporting all of this.
Consistency: Medium body, oils are evident, as is a nice low carbonation that keeps things lively.
Taste: Everything I could have expected and more. Earthy/herbal hop bitterness leading the charge, loads of pineapple and grapefruit in the center. Surprisingly, the rich malt character hinted at in the nose is absent and that's a-ok by me, just a dash of semi-sweet pale malt rings out. Finishes dry, juicy hop flavor continues to smack my face up.

Name does say it all. Very solid and definitely above the cut for style. I like the direction they went with the hops, very nice example of the flavors found in the relatively new hops that are coming from breeding programs.

A - Clear copper, good 2 fingers of creamy head. Excellent retention. Slight hop haze.

S - Plenty of citrus hop (pineapple) , bit of floral hop.

T- Very tasty. Pineapple hop, plenty of citrus. Floral as well. Nice malty backbone. Well balanced for an IPA.

M - Smooth, bold, very bitter.

D - Good.

Pours a pale orange yet slightly hazy appearance into my ccb pint glass. Aroma of tasty citric hops and some malts to balance. Taste follows the nose decent carbonation, smooth and easy drinking. . Moderately bitter yet refreshing. Not a bad everyday ipa. I'm sold!

I don't know how the bros say this is only an 83. This damn good, refreshing, highly drinkable. Just an outstanding WCIPA. Great hop notes, citrus, mango, peach, apricot, etc. Nice balanced backbone. Cristp and clean. Sticky and danky. I can't say another good things.

Thanks to johndoe8 for the bottle. Poured into a tulip.

Appearance. Hazy orange amber in color. Poured, perhaps too vigorously, to reveal 4 fingers of head, which slowly dissipates beautifully leaving quite a bit of sticky lacing.

Smell. Some grassyness joins a hint of medicinal aromas and a dominant mango aroma. Fresh and very light. The smell really opens up as the beer warms.

Taste. Starts out with a light lemongrass flavor which lingers for a nice long time. A fuller and more bitter grapefruit citrus flavor take over. Some malty sweetness accompanies these flavors to help balance the bitterness a bit, but this one remains hop forward all the way through. The medicinal notes picked up in the aroma starts to make itself present in the taste along with some minty herbs, giving a very light taste again. The finish is semi-dry with the lemongrass that was present earlier, along with some bitterness.

Mouthfeel. Pretty standard. Light body and moderate to high amount of carbonation, slightly prickly mouthfeel.

This amount of complexity, from my experience anyways, is not rivaled by any single ipa. Super fresh and super light.

Bottle Date: presumably within the past couple months
Palate Contaminants: a pork chop

Appearance is a pleasant translucent medium amber with a fine foam head.

The smell is not strong at all. I definitely get malty sweetness, along with some candied citrus. It's good, but it doesn't have enough power for me to hear all the instruments.

Unfortunately, the taste isn't anything special. It's by no means bad, but it's a goose in a world of peacocks. There's hardly any sweetness, but it's also not particularly bitter. The main character is earthiness, mostly mossy, I'd say.

Feel is moderate weighted with fine carbonation. The aftertaste has more bitter character. Well-crafted, but missing the gustatory part isn't there for me.

Thanks to johndoe8 for trading this to me.

Wonderful golden bronze color 1 finger white head. Some small bloby lacing.

Somewhat fruity, moderate pine and...gymsock?

Taste has bitter pine citrus pith and rind.

Mouthfeel is somewhat light, with perfect carbonation for the style

Drinkability is pretty high, certainly easy drinking stuff I'd have a couple bombers of this and be pretty happy

Thanks to MrTopher for this little extra; I really appreciate how you made sure I got this one in its freshest state! You really do know my style, man! Poured from a bomber into a tulip.

A: Cloudy orange/peach color. Thick white head (2-fingers) that retains for a long time, eventually thinning down but leaving excellent thick lacing.

N: Ruby red grapefruit and piny resin.

T/M: Creamy body with sweet malty-ness that melds well with sweet citric hops. Smooth, crisp, and very drinkable. A wonderful surprise! As the name implies, this is just one outstanding IPA!

poured from a bomber into my arrogant bastard pint glass, 1.5 fingers of fluffy marshmellow white head tops the brew, looks like a cloud. The body color looks just like an SNPA with a touch of extra cloudiness added in from yeast.

The smell is great, refreshing, citrus, and a tinge of pine added in. The sweet malt adds a honey type scent to the mix as well which leads me to believe the flavor shall be balanced between malt and hop.

The flavor is just what I look for in an American style IPA, the forefront is very hop forward with a fruity sensation, citrus with contributions from orange and grapefruit to my palate. The middle of the taste is faded into from the beginning and gives the mouth a clover honey sweet flavor which refreshes you just long enough for the aftertaste hop assault. The third stage is all hop bitterness which I love as a finish, this IPA is balanced and just what I like in this style...Just Outstanding!

22oz bottle recieved in trade

The best looking beer I've seen in quite a while. The creamy, fine, white foam started up as soon as the beer hit the glass. A very gentle pour yeilded two fingers. The beer has very active carbonation and a coating of white froth sticks around the whole glass. The head never dissipates, there is a 1/4 inch of foam through the whole glass. Beautiful looking beverage. The aromas are herbal and grassy. Smells of dank aged hops. Flavor is great, clean light malt and a very crisp and refreshingly bitter finish. Tangerine and rye bread linger with nice big bittering hops. The mouthfeel is slick and a bit prickly with the carbonation and bitterness, but quite drinkable. A great beer overall.

Pours a clear copper with golden edges and three fingers of soapy white head. As the head fades, it leaves sticky lacing all over the glass.

Aroma is a soft sweet very pleasant citrus aroma of orange and grapefruit with some hints of pine resin in the background.

Taste starts off with some sweet citrus before the hop bitterness takes over. Pretty simple, but very enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is medium but very sticky with some moderate carbonation. This is a very drinkable and enjoyable IPA for the citrusy IPA fan... very nice, can't wait to try the Citra DIPA..

I bought a bomber of this from Olive Tree Market in Ocean Beach.

It pours a clear copper with a creamy off-white head that leaves spidery lacing.

The aroma is floral with a piney undertone and a trace of sweet caramel-y malt.

At first, floral, piney hops hit the tongue, supported by a smooth, sweet malt. Then grapefruit appears with a lingering hop bitterness, followed by an aftertaste of floral tea. 6.8% alcohol with not a trace in the taste.

The mouthfeel is smooth and silky. It coats your throat with a time-release mixture of hop juice and sweet malt. It's thicker than an IPA, but not as heavy as a double IPA.

Overall, the beer is just outstanding :-P Due to the stickiness, a bomber of this was the perfect amount. One a day keeps the doctor away.

Pours deep gold with a medium veil and a positively massive pillow of rocky head that will be your constant companion during this beer and the next.

Greets the nose with a generous fruit salad: pineapple, honeydew, and lemon. Pine and garlic have a cameo appearance.

The mouthfeel is the only thing that's a bit off here. It's a bit thicker and creamier than usual and doesn't have quite enough carbonation to really bring out the full flavor of the hops.

Setting aside the mouthfeel, the taste is quite nice: complex fruit flavors, including a uniquely strong orange note are complimented by a light caramel backbone that provides substance without distracting from the hop-centric mission. The pine and garlic notes arise at the finish along with moderate bitterness that fades with a dry smack to the back of the throat. Overall a very nice, drinkable effort that's well worth a try.

Pours golden amber with a pillowy white head that lasts.
Huge floral and citrus hops on the nose.
Flowery and grapefruit hops with enough malt sweetness to save you tastebuds from total hop destruction.
Great carbonation, crisp mouth accentuates the hops.
Yes, incase you you were wondering, this is just outstanding.

Cracked this open while making up some homemade pico de gallo and guacamole and finished at the computer while rating it with a handful of homemade tortilla chips.

Poured into a Hair of the Dog tulip on 5/28/11.

Pours a very beautiful medium dark honey color with tons of frothy cream colored head that leaves a medium amount of lacing on the glass. I can't really ask much more form this beer in terms of looks.

Smell is a juicy pine smack in the face with a little bit of orange peel and a sweet carmel malt backbone in the background. It has a nice hop presence and a sweetness. Would have liked a little more sweetness and maybe some stronger citrus aromas to build a more complex aroma but its still a very nice smelling brew.

Taste is very much the same as the smell. A pine blast to the palate with hints of citrus and a carmel malt sweetness that makes the beer chewy and tasty. Again not much to fault the beer but would like a little more citrus presence.

Mouthfeel is light to moderate in weight. The tastes easily cover the 6.8 ABV up and there is a nice pine resin that sits in the palate and dries the mouth making you want to take another sip.

Overall this is a great beer and one of the top IPA's out there. It takes some hits on its complexity but really this beer does a great job in balancing the pine hops and the sweet malt. Job well done.

Light orange tan in the glass--somehow reminds me of a light maple syrup. Little to no head. Floral hoppy nose. [I heard from a weed connoisseur that it smells like weed--and good weed, at that.] Wow, what a taste, though! Really good and interesting! Hooray for maltiness! Hooray for dry hopping! The mouthfeel is light and finishes with just a touch of dry stickiness.

Poured into a Bruery tulip glass.

A - Hazy copper color with nice fluffy head.

S - Grapefruits, floral hops, summer fruits like peaches, apricots. Home bready qualities as well.

T - Bitterness with some pine qualities (kind of surprising because you don't get that in the nose). Grapefruit and summer fruits also shine through.

M - Medium carbonation, seems appropriate for a west coast IPA.

D - like Citra, very drinkable. Again, KRBC just makes some of the best California summer IPAs. The citrus tones are, dare I say, just outstanding.

Look: slightly murky amber and frothy eggshell head.
Smell: Dank! Tropical and Piney.
Taste: More piney than tropical.
Feel: Slightly under carbonate and very little bitterness bite at the end. Very smooth.
Overall: Perfect example of west coast IPA.
