Re-review. I've had this a number of times now, both on tap and out of the bottle. It varies quite a bit (maybe freshness is part of the issue -- and without bottle dates, I'm holding it against them). But the last few times I've had it, it has been so consistently good that I'm going to bump it up from a B+ to an A-.

A: Pours a slightly hazy apricot-gold colored body with a finger of off-white head. It retains decently well, leaving big islands of broken foam on the beer, and depositing register marks down the sides of the tulip.

S: Citrus: candied grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, and wet pine. This is definitely Citra's younger brother. Great nose. With more pungency and vibrancy it would be... just outstanding. Oh I slay me.

T: In the past, this was noticeably malty on the palate. No longer. Pale biscuit malt is here, but its only purpose is to balance out the flavor. As such, there is more hop flavor (grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple) than bitterness. The finish brings out a lighter pine note, though this is definitely a citrus-defined profile. The aftertaste is quite clean with only the slightest lingering bitterness.

M: Light-medium viscosity. It's a very clean beer, though, with no lingering bitterness. It closes very neatly.

D: This is definitely upper tier. At $6 in K&L, it inadvertently competes with Pliny the Elder (and loses), but at $4 from the brewery I'd be drinking this by the case.

22oz bottle received as an extra in a trade with bkrefetz...thanks for this one! Poured into an Otter Creek tumbler.

A - Pours a deep amber orange color, mostly clear...just the slightest of haze. a finger of cream colored head forms and sticks around for a brief time before falling to a thin skim coat and a ring of bubbles around the edge. Sticky lacing is left all down the sides of the glass.

S - A nice, pleasant combination of malt and hops with good balance. Solid malt backbone with some sweet caramel and toffee character. Hops are citrusy and fruity...grapefruit is the predominant hop aroma. Well balanced IPA.

T - A very enjoyable IPA...sweet and caramelly malt with citrusy and grassy hops on top. Firm but not overpowering bitterness. Balance is the key in the flavor as well as the aroma.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Enough malt to give it some heft, not quite "chewy" but definitely has some roundness to it. Hops leave their mark too leaving a nice resiny coating that leaves a pleasant grassy bitterness behind after the swallow.

D - Good overall IPA. A good companion for the evening. I would definitely order another of these at a bar if I was fortunate enough to find it in the first place. This is my second experience with this beer...and, honestly I really didn't "get it" the first time around...figured I had a bad bottle and didn't review it. Glad I got an opportunity to give it a second chance.

Thanks Ryan!

Pours like orange juice with a bit more clarity

Juicy ripe tangerine citrus on the nose

Taste follows nose....very ripe juicy tangerines and fresh squeezed orange. Beer ends with a chalky bitterness, somewhat dry.

Easy drinking, medium carbonation, very enjoyable. I'd drink this often.

Glad I was able to find this. I have been wanting to try this for a while now.

Appearance - Pours a hazy burnt tangerine color with a little over a finger of white foamy head that dissipates rather quickly. Great lacing is left on the sides of the glass.

Smell - A burst of tropical citrus aromas burst forth from the glass. Mango, pineapple, grapefruit, etc. A great piney/hop aroma is present after the initial amazing citrus aroma.

Taste - Quite similar to the nose. A bit bitter up front which melds to the great tropical citrus flavors. Not as "sweet" citrus as expected (such as in the Oracle) but there is a relatively decent malt backbone. This is a pretty damn good IPA.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, extremely creamy, decent carbonation.

Drinkability - Quite quaffable. I'm glad I was able to try this. Not balanced per say, and not as tropically sweet as I would like, however, it is a pretty damn good example of an IPA and at the price (less than five dollars a bomber) if I see this again I will definitely pick it up.

Huge thanks to jerz for the hook-up. This is a fantastic representation for the West Coast.

A - Beautiful golden-orange hue with voluminous off-white head, and plenty of rocky lace.

S - Huge tropical-fruity and citrus aromas abound. Tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango and grapefruit are all present in heavy doses. The pale malt is completely subdued by the explosive vibrancy of the hop aromatics.

T - The taste is everything it is labeled as: Just Outstanding IPA. This stuff tastes phenomenal. Again, tropical-citric flavors abound: pineapple, tangerine and sweet grapefruit fuse with a vaguely sweet but totally unobtrusive malt, which is tempered by a very piney-dank-herbal bitter hoppy finish. The whole thing is... you know.

M - IPA. Good. Actually, this transcends good, everything is so right and in-balance with this brew,

D - This is one of the best IPAs I've had in a while. Even taking the label at its word, this is better than I could've hoped for.

Poured 22oz bottle into snifter. Very clear apple juice color with a soft white 2 finger head. Leaves a ring and nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is both sweet from the malts and tropical from the hops. Amarillo was a good choice and a favorite of mine. A bit of grapefruit zest for some bite on the flavor with sweet notes of caramel malts. Tropical flavors of passion fruit and guava add depth to the taste. Both refreshing and dry with a clean and medium feel. Very tasty IPA.

Pours a brownish copper color with nice beige head. Nice lacing. Nose has citrus and pine, bitter hops and sweet malts. Taste has candy malts up front followed by fruity hops that last through the finish. Medium body is well carbonated. Good example of the style.

Poured from a bomber into a standard pint glass. This brew shows a clear and deep golden color with an inch of soapy white foam. Decent retention and lacing follow, holding a surface cap through the pint.

Nose is robust and floral. Rather enticing but short and thus a bit reaching. You gotta reach for it but it's good though brief when you get there. Becomes more piney as the head settles.

Taste is not so outstanding. Bit watery and with a thin hop bite though it does garner up a bit of steam as you adjust. Simple citric malts on the finish. Nice feel and drink with a well balanced bitterness on the finish.

Reviewing the Just Outstanding IPA from Kern River Brewing Company.
Score: 92

No freshness date on the bottle or label. Received in a trade earlier this month with California-based BeerAdvocate user LieutenantSour.

Appearance: Pours a translucent reddish-orange color with two full fingers of foamy cream colored head that slowly settles into a thin layer atop the glass. Sticky, frothy lacing. 4.5/5

Smell: Strong aromas of pine and floral, tropical citrus. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit and mango. Some "sticky," sap-and-pollen earthiness present too. Noticeable maltiness. 4.5/5

Taste: Flavor is more malty than the aroma. The beer has a slightly sweet, malty caramel backbone. A sharply bitter citrus flavor gradually grows from the midpalate to the finish. Lingering notes of sap, pine, pineapple and tangerine in the finish. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is creamy and juicy. Finish is bitter and malty. 4/5

Overall: A simply solid single IPA. I may have sat on this one too long -- I waited 20 days between receipt and consumption -- but still enjoyed it thoroughly. Would love to try this fresh off tap.

Recommendation: Seek this one out unless you hate hops.

Pairings: Mexican food.

Cost: $7.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.
