On Tap

2012 Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest
Paso Robles, CA

Clear, gorgeous amber with a moderately sized off-white head that leaves regular lines of lacing down the glass. Gorgeous beer and perfect for the style.

The hallmark and best aspect of this beer is it's aroma. The amount of citrus and pine hop aromas is remarkable, for an IPA, DIPA, amber or otherwise, this thing smells fantastic. There's just a bit of crystal malt and sweet malt presence, but the pine and pungent citrus notes are simply fantastic.

The flavor isn't quite as nice as the aroma, but there's plenty of pungent citrus and sticky pine flavors, along with balanced crystal malt, and a moderate to high level of bitterness, especially for the style. Quite nice.

Medium bodied with crisp/high carbonation. Very drinkable.

Excellent imperial red.

Not gonna beat around the bush here, “Put some shoes on, hippies! And no, I don’t want to buy a candle.” And DH really isn’t like that. At least, it’s a hippie that uses shampoo. Nice and stuff. But no, you can’t spark a J in my living room.

Packaged on 7/7/22 - consumed on 7/26/22 - poured from a tall-boy can into my Bruery tulip.

Dark, seemingly clear redwood body supports two fingers of beige stiff peaks. Rocky lacing; superior retention.

Candied citrus and tropical fruit in the nose along with powerful malt and hints of caramel.

Sweet, deeply malty palate entry followed by a wave of orange, grapefruit, peach, and mango. Complex malt notes throughout. Moderate clean earthy bitterness. Long medium-dry finish with faint hints of nuts and toast.

Medium-full bodied, chewy, slightly oily, well carbonated, faintly warming yet quenching.

A delightful malt-forward, well hopped, cleanly crafted (despite the name) example of the style - more than the sum of its parts.

650ml bottle, served in a teku glass. Pours a darker amber reddish body, two finger offwhite head, lots of retention and lots of lacing. Smell is dank grassy and citrusy hop aromatics with a fair bit of caramel malt backbone, a bit of toffee and sweet candied sugar. Perhaps some pine resin. The smell is fairly dank, perhaps halfway to a dirty hippie? Flavour is a smooth caramel malt with a big, crisp pine and citrus hop presence, a fair bit of grassy bitterness on the backend. Fairly sweet as expected. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, crisp with a fair bit of resinous bitterness on the backend. Solid hoppy imperial red ale.

Poured into a Spiegelau Glass. You know... The uber Phallic glass with a small shaft & a giant head. ANY-WHO!!

This one is a home run. Argueably the best Red IPA I've had. Dank. Basement mustiness but under control. Pine forward, reminiscent of marijuana and a Tahoe pine forest. Oranges and red berries as the citrus goes. This one improves as it warms. Hops are the star of the show. A pot head's dream of a west coast red IPA.

Not a pretty beer. Juicy, copper rust comes to mind. Smells piney and pungent. Tastes piney and pungent. Feels piney and pungent! But somehow, I just love it. Cheers!

EDIT: After having this in the bottle and being a bit underwhelmed, had it it again at the brewery and WOW! What a difference! Everything seemed heightened, and honestly may be my favorite from KRBC. Obviously not the 6th ann. edition. Cheers!
