Poured into a pint glass at KRBC, tap and bottles to go available (limited).

L: like a red, small light head, light carbonation, minimal lacing. cloudy.

S: You can smell the resinous hops off the bat. This is gonna be good.

T ; This is like a Citra in disguise. This is an aggressive red ale, not for the feint hearted, but definitely down my alley. Definitely lives up to its Imperial status. If you don't like hop character then I doubt you will like this.

F : Smooth and leaning towards hop bitterness. No overly lingering resin or hops though.

This is a great red ale, certainly not passive in character. I have not tasted the other anniversary renditions, but this is very Citra in character, and I love Citra. Between this, the new Barleywine, and the Knee Deep collab, KRBC has really impressed of late. BTW - I bought my bottle limit (6) and already spoken for with future trades.

Picked up a growler at their last Citra release (which was pretty much the best beer I've ever had, but I already reviewed it). Poured into a nonic pint glass.

The brew pours a perfect amber, dark and effervescent yet clear, forming a sudsy one-inch head that's slow to recede. Patchy lacing is all over the place.

The bouquet is subtle, surprisingly so given the relatively high ABV, with earthy grains and distant notes of freshly baked pastries. But the flavors pop, with a citrus-y hop bite quickly matched by sweet grainy malts. There are plenty of lemon and honey derivatives, as the palate is subtly warmed by the alcohol. A relatively light body and complexion supports the layers of flavor and allows for easy detection. Hops become floral towards the finish, and the balance of flavors leaves little aftertaste.

Every time I visit the Kern, usually for one of their big releases, I leave with pleasant surprise. The last time was their Winter Ale - this tastes like a 'lighter' version, all of the flavor but not quite as intense. Dangerously drinkable, this.

A: Dark orange with a subtle reddish tinge. The head is two fingers of off-white froth.

S: Awesome aroma. Pungent pine with excellent citrus character. Tons of grapefruit, tangerine, and orange. Super bright and expressive. Caramel and bread reside beneath, but the hops are the main attraction.

T: Candied caramel with juicy citrus and strong resin notes. Lots of pine with grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. Killer hoppy flavor. Dry finish. Well hidden alcohol throughout.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: Another high quality hoppy beer from Kern River. I really hope kegs hit San Diego.

On-tap at 38 Degrees, on to the beer:

This is a reddish orange beer with a small head on top, leaving just a few spots of lacing around the glass. I smell oak, citrus, and hemp...hemp eh? Maybe that's why it is called the dirty hippe. Anyways, this is another pleasing ale out of Kern River. Although I taste hemp, there's a light wood accent that adds to the pleasant fruitiness of the beer. The alcohol is hidden well, the beer medium bodied, so I'd say order me another one in the future.

Imbibed at Gourmet Haus for Kern River tap takeover, 2/11/13.

Pour a ruddy copper, clear, with a finger of white head that laces like a hoppy amber should. The aroma is almost all hops: mostly grapefruit and other citrus with some pine. There is also some crystal malt in there coming across as slightly metallic. Biscuit comes through with a swirl. Taste is very similar to the aroma with it leaning on that metallic copper flavor more heavily. This taste and the pine bitterness mix together well. What this beer lacks in complexity it makes up for in this marriage of flavors working together so well and drinkability. Feel is balanced, finish is slightly dry. This one is flavorful and dangerously drinkable.
