Thanks to wordemupg for this one.

Poured from a 650ml. bottle.

Appearance: An intense brown body that is impervious to light and has lots of foam but not too much. Sticky lacing between glass and beer and it coats everywhere. Simply perfect looking.

Smell: Fresh citrus, orange and pink grapefruit. Aroma is one-sided but doesn't let up and is quite pleasing.

Taste: Sweet grapefruit and citrus rinds. It's pretty much all about the fresh bitter-sweet fruit and the roasted flavor is minimal. Would have liked more of it but it's still tasty.

Mouthfeel: Strong carbonation which leaves me a bit gassy but it doesn't quite put me over the edge. If there was a 3.25, it would be that.

Overall: Flavor is a one-way street but it's a good one. If the carbonation was lower, this would have been a solid hit. Still, i liked it and would try it again (though a bomber is a bit much).

Bottle: Poured a clear dark black color ale with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt notes with some tropical hoppy notes is different and really enticing. Taste is also dominated by some roasted malt with dry bitter notes offset by some of the tropical fruit notes from the hops. Body is about average for style. Great balanced mix between some bitter, tropical and sweet notes.

From a 650 ml brown bottle. Pours out a dense black shade, only the faintest of translucent garnet highlights appear when held to direct light. Massive frothy tan head with steadfast retention.

Aromas of dark roasty and woody notes, bright citrus and leafy hops. Black coffee and dry cocoa appear after a while.

Bright grapefruit citrus from the hops pop up first in the flavour, however is almost immediately joined by dark malt with a rich coffee character, while things develop towards dry earthy notes accompanied by dry leafy and spicy hops towards the finish. Very clean finish.

Medium-full bodied mouthfeel, texture is a bit watery at first then transforms to a velvety fullness, moderate carbonation with a brisk zip on the finish.

Nice job on the part of the Half Pints crew, this is a pretty solid beer, both for the style and on its own merits. Hops stay a step ahead of things, with the malt complimenting more than it contrasts, while still maintaining some semblance of harmony, if not balance.

Bottle from wordemupg, thanks again Chris. 650ml into a tulip, 60 IBUs.

Almost completely black in colour, with a tan head. Dense retention and quite thick in terms of lacing. Nose has dark chocolate, roast, burnt toast/smoke all layered over sweet hop notes, citrusy, earthy and rind-y. Deep roasted and toasted notes on the palate, grapefruit and more citrus underneath. Interesting interplay between the roast/black IPA components and juicy Galaxy hops. Bitterness is moderate, but the roast character lasts for quite some time. A unique black IPA, more burnt/roast character than I'm accustomed to but still provides for a nice and interesting beer.

650ml bottle. Shiny, glossy, star-scape label. Who is the natty bow-tied dude in the inset portrait? Carl Sagan?

This beer pours a very, very dark opaque cola hue, with significant reddish edges when exposed to the expanding prairie evening light, and two fingers of puffy, chunky beige head, which performs a sit-in of sorts, allowing for further viewing of this beer as a whole - gorgeous, indeed. Upon settling, a decent specter of bleeding Cartesian map lace emerges.

It smells of toasty chocolate caramelized malt, and a pleasant array of fruity, citrusy, and herbal hop aromas. The taste falls nicely in line with mildly roasted nutty chocolate malt, peppy citrus, floral, and leafy hop notes, and a subtle tropical fruitiness.

The bubbles are pretty laid back, the body a solid medium weight, more than a little creamy, and unassailable in its smoothness. It finishes messily off-dry, the baker's chocolate malt still enduring a strafing run from the sassy hops.

Wow. A beer that you just want to drink without disturbance, as it pulls you in, with the big, but well-modulated hitters - roasted Caramilk-esque malt, and new-hop in town enhanced fragrant bitterness. Not exactly a blast over the moon, but rather, a small slice of heaven right down here on terra firma.

Thanks wordemupg for this bit of prairie goodness. Wish I had access to this brewery out here.

Appearance. Pours a dark cola brown with a finger of tan head that lasts a while.

Smell. Dark chocolate, piney hops, roasty dark malts and a little grapefruit rind.

Taste. Nice big hops with lots of pine sap and grapefruit rinds, coffee and some roasty dark malts, good bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with smooth, medium+ carbonation.

Overall. Really nice black ipa. Love these ones when they're done well ...or at least to my taste. This was a good one.

On-tap at Round Table Pub in Winnipeg. Serving was 16oz in branded room temperature shaker glass.

A- Black, opaque. One to one and a half fingers of off-white head and some nice lacing.

S- Floral and some citrus. Slight roasted malt character.

T- Nicely balanced combination of galaxy hops with grapefruit and roasted chocolate notes. Very Nice.

M- Thinner than it looks. Nice combination of medium to light body and moderate carbonation.

O- Not what I was expecting but a nice surprise. Look forward to trying it again.

What a treat! Beer Bros lucky leprechan made their patrons wishes come true with a couple o' kegs of 1/2 Pints Black Galaxy for St. Patricks Day.

Poured into a sturdy pint glass the Black Galaxy presented an opaque black body with a 2 finger frothy white to cream coloured head.

Subtle hop aroma with light floral notes.

A unique flavour profile of an ale with the crispness of the black malts. Not unlike a porter or stout. Yet this black ale packs a pleasing hoppy punch. The website says Australian Galaxy hops were added to this offering. My first go at that hop-impressive.

Mouthfeel of this beer was superb. Freshly poured out of the keg this beer had a creamy texture like a sturdy stout yet much lighter bodied and then the added bitterness from the hop. Not overtly hopped as some Black IPA's can be.

Overall drinkability was spot on. An excellent balance of the bitterness of the hop with the creaminess of a Black Ale.

Kudos to 1/2 Pints for crafting this unique beer & without going over-the-top on the black malts or the hop.

Special thanks to Beer Bros for continuing to offer a wonderful array of beer and for puting the keg of "Black Galaxy" on tap on day when good beer should be celebrated.

650ml bottle poured into tulip 2/4/12

A near black with cola at the edges, gentle pour still leaves you with half a glass of tan foam that slowly falls to an island leaving several partial tings of lace, looking good

S big hoppy nose with some tropical fruits and a little pine, tangerine and pineapple give way to some of the dark malts with a little milk chocolate but its the hops that are in charge here

T a little more balanced in the mouth with some more of the dark malts and a little charred wood on the finish, interesting stuff as one sip is all hops and the next has the dark malt going for it

M medium bodied but its a little foamy, bitter for sure and has a a big finish of char

O I'm loving the union between the tropical hops and dark malts in this one, I'm struggling to grasp how strong the hop nose is on a black beer

another winner from Half Pints and a great example of the style, I couldn't be happier with this one and at 6$ a bomber I might need to stock up

Appearance - Pours a dark cola brown with a finger width of bubbly beige head.

Smell - Citrus/grapefruit, pine, tropical fruits... certainly not what I was expecting.

Taste - Starts off with refreshing citrus flavours, followed by strong hops & malts. Nice hoppy bitterness left in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate tingly carbonation.

Overall - Another great seasonal by Half Pints. Great representation of this style. I really enjoyed the complexity of the hops and malts flavours. If you can get your hands on a bottle, it's worth a try.
