The Claret free house is the place to go for lots of well-kept real ales on tap. Unassuming, and uncomplicated, it doesn't fit the classic image of a pub in one’s mind.

Tucked along a row of shops, the window blind dominates the front façade. It casts a shadow over the tinted front windows. Ash trays hang on the wall outside, the product of the UK indoor smoking ban. You might find smokers hanging about out under the blind, probably to get out of the rain.

Once through the front door, a single room opens out with the bar running along the left hand side. There are lots of small tables with plenty of chairs, providing an intimate feel. This place has no pretensions, just honest folk wanting a good pint in the company of friends and acquaintances.

It’s clear the owners take the beer seriously, it’s their forte, and they are proud to serve fresh real ales. To the right, centered in the middle of the wall you’ll see the blackboard listing the beers on tap; their strength and the brewery that made them. The beer is fresh, hand pumped and mostly local, originating from breweries based in London or the Home Counties. Overtime the beer selections rotate, most are classic English ale styles. The beer is fairly priced and served by the pint or half pint.

To get there on foot from East Croydon station, leave the station and turn left. Walk along Addiscombe Road for approx. 10-15 minutes until you reach Ashburton Road on the left. Walk to the end of the street and turn right on to Lower Addiscombe Road and continue past Bingham Road on the right. Half way along the next parade of shops on the right, sandwiched between a hairdressers and a Chinese takeaway, you'll find the Claret free house; bastion of real ale for locals and aficionados alike.
