Notes / Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Overall, I just don't get enough taste, pumpkin, spice, or otherwise.

If the people of this site were to properly rate beers to the style, this would score much higher. It's one of my favorites because it doesn't taste like fake pumpkin or massive amounts of spice. It's beer that tastes like the earthy, squashy qualities of a pumpkin. Refreshing and good on a cool night.

Christmas beers are already arriving on shelves, but ai won't let that stop me from having an autumn beer. 13 ounces to drink here, and on to the beer:

Light orange colored and topped with a short white head, this New England pumpkin ale leaves a few spots of lacing around the glass. Pumpkin pie spices are present, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and a little heap of pumpkin puree.

This arrives being a little bitter than expected. The spices that were smelled do make their way as a flavor, but on the palate, something is released that leaves a bitter marking. If it were controlled, this would be one more pleasant pumpkin ale on the market. Unfortunately, this one has a flaw which may cause it to get lost in the shuffle.

Love this as a transition beer from summer to pumpkin. Not too pumkiny and more like a beer! Yum Will ge more!

BBD 1/16/16. Clear amber pour with a normal head volume, outstanding retention and world class lacing.

Outstanding nose of pumpkin and spice with a touch of biscuit.

Heavy light body with a semi-smooth texture. Above normal carbonation with a fair amount of effervescence in the middle and a nice burst in the finish.

The flavor profile is borderline very good. Intensity is reasonable, not very complex and a bit out of balance. Cinnamon is a bit out of balance due to it lacking a balancing sweetness. It begins with cinnamon then flows into pumpkin. The middle takes on a pumpkin rind bitterness coupled with cinnamon. The finish is a slow fade of rind and cinnamon bitterness.
