Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

A nicely balanced and subtle pumpkin ale - especially when put side by side to most other pumpkin ales. I would buy this again - which is not what my usual reaction to most pumpkin beers.

Beautiful light pumpkin color, even if a bit too light. Smell is typical sweet pie and spice, but a bit faded and with a nice faintly sour tinge. The taste in large part is the classic sweet pumpkin taste of most of the really popular pumpkin beers, but at a far more subdued level with more of the base beer coming through, making this both unusual for the style (though not to say *out* of style) and a refreshing entry. As far as both pumpkin and beer, with a bit of emphasis on the beer, this gets the highest marks. Very easy to think this is much more like "early colonial" beers than any other major distro pumpkin beer out there today. l prefer the stronger pumpkin, pie, and spice flavors in offerings like Pumking, Pumpkick, and Whole Hog, but this is great and irreplaceable as a counterpoint to those.

If the people of this site were to properly rate beers to the style, this would score much higher. It's one of my favorites because it doesn't taste like fake pumpkin or massive amounts of spice. It's beer that tastes like the earthy, squashy qualities of a pumpkin. Refreshing and good on a cool night.
