Mid sized bottle...thanks to my buddy Pat FD for gifting this to me.

"Bottled january 2016" so this has been in the bottle for about a year now.

Pours dull looking shade of dark orange, minor light kahki film, thin collar and some low tiny bubble sheeting.

Sniff reveals some earthy, bretty, yeasty, funkyness...yum...simply love a funked up brew with brett in evidence.

Delicious stuff, with more and more of the above flavors coming forward.....funky,earthy, yeasty, bretty, more barnyard....tasty, complex and enjoyable...happy to be able to sample this tasty nectar....

Thanks to Smanson56 for this one from his LIF box. Pint bottle poured into 10oz goblet. Bottled in January 2016. Poured a lightly hazy yellow gold color with some rocky, white head that immediately dissipated to a very thin ring, and left no lacing.

The beer was a huge Brett-bomb on the nose, LOTS of funk on top, with some very gentle grain underneath. Fairly similar descriptors on the tongue, with the grain showing a bit more backbone, and, perhaps, some very faint earthy hops.

The body was crisp and smooth, with a clean dry finish. Drinkability was great, if you're a Brett fan. Overall, a very nice brew that I wouldn't mind having a few more bottles of to see how the Brett changes the beer over time. Worth trying if you see it.

This one was served on tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, New York. It arrived in a house snifter showing a shimmering shade of apple juice. It held a one finger head of tight off-white foam, showing respectable retention. This was quite easily reproducible on a swirl around the glass. Lacing was patterned, globular, and wet. Clarity was crystal clear, without sediment. Carbonation appeared to be high, akin to sparkling wine or juice. The aroma gave warmed apple cider, soured and biting bretty yeastiness, tinny metallics, vinyl plastics, tart lemon flesh, soapy hoppiness, freshly pressed cotton, light tobacco smokiness, bourbon and rum woodiness, pale and pilsner malts, Smarties candy sweetness, green bell peppers, fizzy peach soda, and cranberry acidity. The mouth met a blend of raw honey, white wine vinegar, confectioner’s sugar, lemon and lime rind, hearty and savory lacto and Brettanomyces, tin, pale and light caramel malts, oaky woodiness, sour cherries, rosé wine, Concord grape juice, starchy breadiness, distant oat and raw wheat, hairspray, celery root, mineral, mustard seed, and arugula. Each sip afforded little cream of froth, but had nice finishing slurp, smack, and pop to the lips and high palate. The body was light, and the carbonation was medium. The mouth was dried and puckered, leaving you with lemonade throat. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank back decently.

Overall, this is what we would like to call a nice “starter sour”. For those of you either new to sours/wilds, or for those that may not be quite frothing at the mouth for the style like most of us here on BeerAdvocate, this beer may serve as an easy transition or introduction for you. There is no question as to what style this is, or to the yeasts used to ferment it, but there is a mild and sweet quality to it that makes it softer, gentler, and generally less biting by nature than many others. For veterans, you’ll sour sensors will certainly be satisfied here, but don’t expect to be floored. To our immediate knowledge we can’t think of another time we’ve had anything like this from Smuttynose, so from that perspective we applaud them on their branching out as well.
