Notes: You could say, then, that Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 75 IBU's, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that's not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

355 ml bottle, as Smuttynose Finestkind IPA, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Nice hoppy aroma, notes of oranges. Pleasant hoppy flavour throughout, notes of orange peel and pine, well balanced.

Lightly hazed golden appearance with a large off white head and very good lacing. First up in the aroma is citrus followed by a bit of spice and spruce. Hop focused taste, resinous and citrusy. Still, enough malt to keep things relatively balanced. Bitter but not numbing. Actually, quite pleasant.

Finestkind IPA has a medium, white head, a translucent gold appearance, with splotchy lacing, and lazy bubbles. The aroma is of piney hop resin, white bread, and a touch of fruit. The flavor is similar, with robust bitterness. Finestkind has a medium body and a mostly-dry finish.

You’ve been in class all day; tissues, pathways, mechanisms ring through your head with no sign of slowing soon. Its 7:30pm, and the sun has already near set across the Somerville sky. Brain exhausted and eyes strained, you close out your last Zoom call, shut your laptop and make your way to the balcony outside for some fresh air. To your immediate surprise, instead of the typical metro humidity and busyness, you’re met with a cool, crisp, natural breeze. Fall is here. The North is calling. You immediately know what to do ; you traipse back inside to their fridge and crack a Smutty. The Finest Kind. Notes of pine and grass complete the symphony; the briskness of arriving autumn tapered by the flowing IPA approaching your extremities... warmth. You don’t just feel home, you ARE home. That is what Smuttynose’s Finest Kinda does for you, and for that reason it has earned a spot in my fridge. Cheers.

Pours... well I don't know. I had 3 of them within their own cans. The aroma is hop-forward with a hint of citrus, maybe pineapple? The taste can be described as 'woodsy' with an emphasis on floral hops with a resinous finish. One of the strengths of this beer is its smoothness. Although it is 6.9%, it could pass for 5% or lower.

Aroma is pine, grapefruit, grass.

Taste follows nose: Pine, grapefruit, grass. Resinous.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Another good one from Smutty.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance:
A misty, dark yellow; the color of a sunflower’s iris. Proffers up a big, soapy, head of white that skips town before the party starts. Leaves no trace of lace.

Bouquet:
A hushed duet of semi-sweet hops and tiny speckles of pineapple. Fresh citrus cuts in front of these quiet performers, playing a lurid yet catchy jazz solo which nearly tunes them out.

Feel:
A slick, medium body with a nearly impalpable booze finish that has the gentle warmth of a springtime sunrise. The carbonation plays a subtle yet imperative, supporting role.

Taste:
A drizzle of pineapple syrup over a fistful of tangy, citrus hops. Any potential acidic bitterness is bumped out of the picture by a biscuity, malt backbone.

Pours a translucent copper with two fingers of khaki foam. Head retention is good. Aroma is sticky, resiny, floral, citrusy hops with a hearty biscuity, bready malt backbone. 'Oldschool' IPA vibes, but in the best of ways. Balance is clean. Flavor profile is resiny, floral, citrusy hops in a sticky mash-up. Biscuity and bready malts offer up some support and relief to the hop bite. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a fuzzy texture. Overall, a balanced old school, 'West Coast' IPA with a little bit of hop bite with a net balance.

Draft. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a translucent golden/hay color with a fast receding off white head. Smell is reminiscent of citrus and peaches, fresh cut grass. Taste is very fruity and citrus forward. Some malt comes into play and almost balances the bite with sweetness(not quite) Feels very carbonated,(bonus) medium body ,finishes juicy. This is a very nice drinkable IPA. Overall a keeper.

Poured from a bottle into pint glass in Nov 2019. There is a drink before date of 12/2019 on the bottle.

Appearance: Light gold color with 2 finger white head. It is very hazy, like other New England IPAs. Head is thick and there is nice lacing.

Smell: Strong aroma of hops, pine, and citrus, as well as some sweetness like pineapple. Overall the citrus aroma dominates the other aromas.

Taste: There is a strong hops flavor with some citrus, pine, and a little sweetness as well. This is a little more bitter than most other IPAs, which I like. Has a nice after taste. Overall a nice balance and very drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Medium alcohol which matches the 6.9% listed.

This is a very good and interesting IPA. It has a nice mix of citrus, hops, and other flavors, which makes it interesting. I like the overall balance, and that the citrus flavors are pronounced but do not dominate the flavor. This has a good hop bite and my favorite of the Smuttynose Pale Ales. It is very drinkable and I would buy this again.

i don't have a sophisticated palate like so many reviewers here. but i know what i like, and i *really* like this one. honey colored, and a well-balanced fruity, haze, hop, malt, and body, but not dialed up to 11. i put it in the new england class of ipa, but lofted to a perfect height. i can't give the particulars better reviewers can, but i can tell you this is regularly in my refrigerator.

12 Oz Bottle poured into glass
Look - golden yellow color, mostly clear, thick foam head and lots of glass lacing
Smell - very sweet mineral quality. Sweet fruits and grass.
Taste - It's a nice drinkable beer, something that can not be said for every IPA. Only a medium body and medium-light carbonation. Bitterness is more so in the finish but initially on the palate, it's very sweet, slightly tropical flavor. Some dank earthy mineral qualities.

Overall, very good beer. It doesn't really pop with specific fruit flavors that you get in other IPA's like grapefruit or pineapple. It's just well balanced sweetness up front and lingering chewy hops. Grade is an A-

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass.
Golden-orange color and faint haze in appearance, with white head.
Smells sweet malty, lemony, grainy, a little soapy.
Tastes equal parts lemon-orange, malt (somewhere between biscuit and caramel), and grain, with a fairly hard-stop bitter and grain finish.
Medium body. Crisp.
Overall, a wonderfully rounded, crisp IPA that has a bit of everything (citrus, malt, grain, bitterness) melded into every sip - a complexity that is not overwhelming. I think this is not the original recipe (which I miss)? - I remember the original smuttynose 'finest kind' as being more floral in the nose and pine in flavor.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Slightly hazed golden pour with thick foamy white head. Nice lacing.

S: Toasted malts with pine/citrus hops.

T/F: Sweet toasted grains up front. A bit of caramel... modest hop bitterness. Pine forward with some lighter citrus and floral notes. Medium to light bodied... sticky on the tongue.

O: A decent enough west coast style IPA. Nothing too exciting but an everyday kinda beer.

12-oz. bottle poured into a 16-oz. mug.
A moderate pour produced a finger sized frothy white head, long lived with lots of lace.
Slightly hazy pineapple-orange juice color, looks golden-yellow in front of light.
Hops dominate the smell, floral and citrusy with faint malt in the background.
Taste has floral/piney hops at first as semi-sweet malt takes over the middle with some pineapple-O.J. flavor. Bitter hops fill in the end as it becomes semi-dry with a clean finish.
Medium bodied with extra carbonation that moves the feel along with a slight peppery bite from alcohol and hops.
A happy revisit, easy drinker, smooth despite the abundant hops. I remember this beer being not as hazy and juicy the last time I tried it three years ago, I think it has improved.

BB 11/21/18
Bright clear golden color with big fluffy white head
Grapefruit, pine needles, caramel as it warms
That caramel again, followes by citrus but mainly grapefruit, with a piney finish
Medium to light bodied, as it starts off somewhat full, but has a watery finish
Overall I'm all for an old school IPA, but this is a bit too malt forward for me

I picked up a single 12 oz bottle marked "best by 7-23-2018" as this was a beer I've wanted to try for some time and with Smuttynose going under I figured this was as good a chance as any. I was hoping this was a 3-month dating window, not 6 months but I'm inclined to guess the latter as the flavor and aroma were not all that impressive. Some pine, grapefruit, and pithy bitterness. Meh.

As I just had a couple, I thought it was high time I rated one of my go-to IPAs. From the bottle to a Hermit Thrush tulip glass. You might call it an old-school IPA, but for me it's always a refreshing change from the NEIPAs that are all the rage. Fruity, hoppy, balanced.

Bitter finish. Good carb. Medium mouthful. One of my favorite IPA's. An all time classic on the style.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a semi-golden burnt dark orange color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a fairly decent pace. Slight foamy speckled lace looked great.
The aroma was filled with sharp piney sweet hops playing with a huge floral to zesty/semi-spicy hoppiness and flowing over a clean caramel/toffee malt bill (which seemed extremely faint).
The flavor achieved a well nuanced zesty/spicy hoppiness flowing over a breaking apart piney-ness (was sweet but became somewhat bitter as it warmed). Well balanced aftertaste between the malts and the zesty/spicy hops.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch towards the light side with a healthy carbonation. ABV felt on par. Nice spicy hoppiness and floral hoppiness in the finish.
Overall, before all of these "haze IPA bombs" that came out, this AIPA was being knocked back by many beer geeks. And honestly, I would say many are still are as well as me. Hoping my numbers reflect how I truly feel about this beer.
