Smuttlabs Blueberry Short WeisseSmuttlabs Blueberry Short Weisse
Notes: Blueberry Short Weisse kicks off Smuttynose’s canned Short Weisse series with a New England classic! The clean, tart acidity of our lactic fermentation process contributes massive refreshment to beer drinkers. Blueberry aging adds not only a striking purple color, but a delicious flavor nuance that’s pure summer. The lightweight can package means you can take this fruity refreshment golfing, hiking, to the beach, or boating. Smuttynose Short Weisse beers are made with a time consuming two-part fermentation process that happens in both the brewhouse and the fermenter. The first stage takes place in the kettle with a dose of our house lactobacillus, a bacteria that’s a key component in making yogurt and sour cream. The second phase takes place in the fermenter with a German-style hefeweizen yeast. This time consuming process means we can only make limited amounts of Short Weisse beers. Fortune favors the bold – get your orders in soon!

i loved this, one of the most unique and relevant beers i have had from these guys in years, although my exposure has been unfortunately limited. this is really good, a super bright and clean base berliner, but fermented out with hefeweizen yeast it sounds like, and how unique is that with the fruit! there is a little pink lavender color to this, a little haze, and a frenzy of carbonation, the perfect liveliness for a summery style, good to drink right from the can! it has a unique yeast complexity, and while the lactic sour side is mild to me, its also clean, lemony, and straightforward, allowing some space for the spice and fruit rind profile of the hefe yeast, a smart call and an interesting one! soft citrus and white pepper, way less than would exist in a full on hefe, but a wonderful touch with the acidity and it all seems particularly well suited to the heavy, but fresh and natural blueberry profile. the fruit is real, bold, tannic, and a little jammy here, but this is fermented to fully dry and definitely refreshing with the high carbonation. i could drink a bunch of these, not too sour at all, and really good. these dont need brett to be complex it turns out, just a flavorful ale yeast for the fermentation after the kettle, i had a blast with this one! id love to try some other fruited editions, but blueberry is perfect for it!

Can from Bridge Liquor's in Newport. Smuttynose was my gateway to craft beer and I'll always be excited to try a new beer from them.

A clear reddish pink with a light pink head that falls off rapidly leaving little lacing, this looks solid. The nose is bright and bursting with blueberries, fresh, fruity, redolent and fleshy. Rather uniquely, this doesn't have a jammy or cooked blueberry flavor, instead having more of the fruity, floral blueberry character. This is coupled with a moderate lactic note and a grainy wheat backbone make for a solid berlinerweisse. The palate opens with a blend of lactic and lemony acidity, both of which rather magnificently amplify the underlying blueberry flavor. Fruity, fragrant, on point and fleshy with just enough of a skin tannin note, this is great. The higher than ideal ABV does make the mid-palate a little watery. Grainy on the finish along with a mostly lemony and mildly lactic tartness, this beer exceeds expectations. The lemony acidity really keeps the fruit flavor fresh and prevents it from being jammy or cooked. Very nice.

Poured into pokal. The appearance was a hazy burnt pink color. Quickly dissipating filmy white head. No lacing. The smell starts off with the sour-ed wheat, and then the blueberries with a slight twang of lemon rind and bitternesss underneath. The flavor wraps it all together. Sticks to the "sour" side of the wheelhouse like a normal Berliner should. Meshed-in sticky sour feels it’s way into the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a nice sessionable feel to it. Carbonation does run fairly light. Leaves a nicely calculated sour-ness hitting my tongue. Overall, I say pretty good Berliner Weisse that I would have again. Blueberries to me, yeah, I have a slight bias to those lil’ buggers, so having them in this beer is a plus. I like the idea, and this was executed nicely.

A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a light violet color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of blueberries, some breadiness. Taste is tart, blueberries, dry, sour, but not overpoweringly so. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

Pastel red-purple with no head.

Smell is blueberry rhubarb cobbler.

Taste brings the same mouth watering blueberry rhubarb cobbler. Those biscuity qualities distract then all of a sudden raspberry flavor seems to take over.

Tart but soft and bready, substantial on the palate.

L: Gorgeous, hazy, dark pink, with a bubbly light pink head that fizzles away quickly and leaves spotty lacing.

S: Subtle blueberry, sour cherry, lemon acidity, salinity, crackery malt and wheat.

T: Under ripe blueberries, lemon peel, citric acid, red and blue Sweet Tarts, faint crackers and tangy wheat, a touch of grass on the finish.

F: Light-bodied, but not quite watery. Moderate carbonation. Drinks like a fizzy Gatorade.

O: One hell of a refreshing Berliner, but lacking in notable blueberry flavor. Quite enjoyable overall, though.

Pours a light fizzy bubbly head that fades at a med pace, no real lacing, a pink reddish orange clear tan beer.

Nose big creamy wheat, like thick creamy doughy wheat almost cheese cake like aroma, a little corn mash thing, a hint of a honey malt like aroma, with fruity notes, hard to really label as blueberry, maybe a little blueberry and generic berry, some blueberry flesh.

Taste starts pretty tart, Berlinner sourness almost lemony, with more creamy wheat, again corn like note but not really corn more like grits or something, and a cheese cake character, little toasted grainy note, creamy frosting, a mild fleshy blueberry, tart soured blueberry but hard to label blueberry again more generic fleshy berry btu still light. Finish is drier but sticky and a little flemmy, quite tart, mild berry and more cream lingering.

Mouth is med to lighter bod, lighter carb too, little acidic and quite tart.

Overall eh, wish the blueberry was a lot more, and wish the weird creamy corn cheese cake thing was a lot less, it's not so great for this beer, although the tartness was there.

12oz. can served in a shaker pint. Pours the color of ruby grapefruit juice with a loose, quarter inch bright white head that dissipates towards the edges. Copious tiny bubbles are present effervescing in-solution. Clarity is slightly hazy. Nose is tart and expresses berries with a hint if yeast in the background. Taste consistent with nose - a bready quality comes out upfront followed by tart blueberries and grape must. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively carbonation and a kiss of astringency. Overall, pleasantly tart and refreshing - similar to a Gose without the briny quality.

I have to say the color threw me for a loop. Guess I was expecting blue? Poured in a Weizen glass, it looked to me to be a ruby red. Very tart and acidic with a fruity bouquet. Nevertheless, I found it crisp and refreshing. Glad it's in a can for enjoyment anywhere.

A- Pours from the can into a glass with a beautiful purple-red hue and a clear body. A head forms atop the brew to about two fingers high with a foamy texture and fair retention. Some legs but no lacing after the cap disappears.

S- Lemony lactic acidity combines with a berry feel that comes in both bright and fresh. A touch bready and grainy behind those two main components.

T- The berries lead the way at this stage taking on a sort of underripe tart feel and coming off as a touch vinous. Lactic acid from the bacteria brings the berries together with rustic bready hints and a slight funky feel. With time a more distinct blueberry feel opens up.

MF- Very light bodied with a texture leaning more towards the fizzy foamy side than creamy; still avoids being like a soda. Very high end puffy carbonation and a sour finish.

The focus here is on the berries and the tartness but the grains end up being a key component helping to balance things out. Bright, sour and full of berries, hard not to like this.

A: Pours a clear purplish red in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and faint orange honey highlights. The beer has a three finger tall fizzy foamy pinkish white head that quickly reduces to a a couple of small to medium sized patches of very thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of slightly sweet blueberries, slightly sour wheat, and tart lemon citrus.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of slightly sour wheat malts with a light amount of grainy malts as well. There is a moderate flavor of slightly sweet blueberries and light to moderate flavors of slightly tart lemon citrus. There is a light lingering tartness.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of acidic prickliness.

O: Definitely enjoyable and easy to drink with enjoyable flavors and aromas though I do wish there was just a little more blueberry to it.

It is a relatively cooler evening tonight than it has been the past few days, but it is still hot & humid enough that anything involving blueberries sounds really good. It is even better when it CAN be in furtherance of The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Crafting fine beers in NH since 1994"; "Make mine a Smutty!"

The Crack! inspired an inverted Glug, but what happened next was CANpletely unexpected. I got two-plus fingers of foamy, fizzy, pink (yes, pink!) head that simply fizzled its way out of existence. The liquid in my glass was a slightly-hazy Magenta (SRM = N/A). Wow! Nose smelled of blueberries, but not as strongly as I had hoped. Mouthfeel was thin and watery. The taste was very tart, fitting for a Berliner Weisse, but overpowering for the accompanying blueberries. Poor blueberries! The finish was absolutely dry and I kept hoping that the blueberries would become more assertive at some point in this whole CANcoction, but I was left disappointed. I fail to see the point of their addition in this, other than color, rendering more of a novelty than something that I would return to on a routine basis. Oh well. Onward!

On-tap 7/16/2016 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy light purplish amber color, with a large pinkish white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, blueberries and an odd strong funk that throws everything off.

T: Likewise there’s a strong wheat funk up front that makes it hard to drink. Then there’s some blueberry flavor and a some tartness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and there’s a bit of creaminess.

M: Crisp but not smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry.

O: Not tasty, does not go down easily, not too filling, mild kick, not a good representation of style, normally I’ve found Smuttynose beers to be very solid but I do not recommend this one at all.

Overall: excellent beer. I really like the color, the sour tartness, the earthiness and the citrus.

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass.

Pale pink body, almost with a bit of grapefruit dark orange color, with a light fizzy three finger pink head that dissolves slowly but steadily to a simple collar. Quite clear with minimal carbonation.

Really good fruited nose. Blueberry warmth, and thick husky grains. Moderate tartness but goes for a juiced fruit angle that really comes out nice. Grains come out a bit cereal and sweet smelling, forgoing wheat chew and classic thickness, but the density is there. Very nice.

Palate goes a little simpler. Fruited nice blueberry flavor, but with a malt depth that doesn't really back it up. Fruit forward, and a nice blueberry tone that isn't artificial either and quite tasty. A good tart quality that does manage to kick in, makes you remember this is still a Berliner, but leaves much of the tangy sour character behind in full front blueberry mild sweetness.

This is a very good fruited brew, but manages to overtake much of the Berliner Weisse character down a bit.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lightly spritzy

O: A solid berliner that really leans on the blueberries. Pretty much the same base as their other berliners, but the blueberries really pop here and help to elevate the base to the next level
