Old Brown DogOld Brown Dog
Notes: Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the “American Brown Ale” style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

Obtained in trade from ShogoKawada (thanks!). Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass. Unsure of the best before date, but this is pretty clearly a fresh bottle.

Burnt umber body with copper, ochre, and even carnelian highlights. On first glance, this looks almost like an amber (red) ale. Beige head of average height, and good retention. Sandy lacing and thin syrupy legs.

Mild roasted malt, bread and butter (though not diacetyl), graham crackers, scottish breakfast tea, and (somewhat generic) nutty aromatics.

Flavor generally mirrors the scent. Slight caramel notes, but overall a clean presentation, and rather refreshing. Well balanced, with no flavors standing out much above the others. This pairs very well with food, accentuating most any dish of reasonably strong flavor (Italian, British, or American).

Medium-light bodied, with good carbonation. Slightly chewy texture; no astringency; warming enough to hint to the imbiber that this might be better sipped than chugged, though depending on your constitution, this could be a worthy session ale.

A well executed English Northern Brown style with an American brown strength. I'm beginning to think Smuttynose would become a staple for me if I lived in their area of distribution.

Pours bright dark mahogany under a 1.5” rocky and clingy light tan foam collar. Some caramel and chocolate on the nose and palate with some light nuttiness. No harsh roast or burnt flavors or aromas. Medium body and carbonation. This is a brown als you can drink all night.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish brown with a 1" tan head. Thin cap remains, nothing lingers on the walls of the glass.

Aroma: Caramel malts, bloody/flinty and slightly sweet. Slight hoppiness, and as it warms it gets sweeter & fruitier. Toffee.

Taste: Tart arrival, sweet across mid-palate. Distinctive bitter apple flavor on the middle, not sure if it's hops or esters, but it is unique and good. Roasty, dry finish. The finish is quite bitter, and brings balance to an otherwise sweet beer.

Mouthfeel: Hefty; solid & substantial. Not heavy, though. Mid-to-heavy weight. Moderate carbonation. Creamy, but slight astringency on the finish prevents cloying sensation.

Overall: This is a great example of an American brown ale. Love the style and love the beer; nothing pedestrian about this one. Caramelly, tart, and clean. Hides 6.7% (now 6.5%) really well. On the sweeter side of the brown ale spectrum, with a little fruit lurking beneath the toast and caramel. I plan on buying this regularly.

Thanks goes out to TheManiacalOne for this brew.

Pours a nice slightly cloudy dark golden brown color, nice carbonation, tiny fizzy off-white head, some sticky lacing follows. The nose is malty, toasty, and some caramel. The taste is a nice toasted malty flavor, with a good dose of caramel. Medium body. Drinkable, a nice little Brown Ale. Glad to have had a chance to try it out.

Appearance - Dark brown in color with a frothy tan head.

Aroma - Smells of dark fruits.

Mouthfeel - Thin bodied ale with light fizzy carbonation.

Taste - Sweet toffee that fades quickly and finishes with a roasted malt aftertaste.

Overall - This is a decent beer, it just didn't impress me that much.

Bottle, but always happy to see it on tap. A standard bearer. Caramel isn't to my taste, but the fullness, integration of ingredients, and final smoothness render complaints silly.

12 ounce brown bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.

A - A nice deep brown color with a two finger off white head. In the spots where light comes through the beer has a reddish tint to the brown.

S - Smells like roasted malts with a nutty character coming through.

T - Dark roasted malts come full circle from the first sip till the beer goes down. Some hop presence in the middle of the drink but the beer is mainly charactierized by the roasted malt. The beer finishes with some sweetness kicking up then a roasty nuttiness in the aftertaste. Very nice.

M - Medium body with a nice smooth character in the mouth.

D - Very nice for a darker session beer. That nutty aftertaste is inviting me for another sip every time.

My fiance wanted me to buy this beer because of the "brown dog" on the bottle (looks like our chocolate lab) so I did. I enjoy brown ale's so I figured it was worth a try.

It had a nice amber color when pouring into a pint glass, but little head. It had a nice nutty and faint chocolate smell. It had decent mouth feel, but the after taste was not great. Was it worth the $8.50 for the six pack, not really, but it was worth a try.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a cherry brown color, lightly hazy with some resplendent carbonation rising from the bottom. A soft foamy white head fades slowly to a ring and a film cap, leaving some lace on the glass.

Smell: Roasted malt, with touches of hazelnut and chocolate. Maybe some leafy hops on the back end.

Taste: This is malty all the way through, but it never really sweet, which is nice. Roasted malt with a touch of cocoa carry the malt, with a light spiciness and then

Mouthfeel: Some tingly carbonation to start, but the feel is creamy overall, buttery even. A Surprisingly full carbonation, with a light to medium body. Finishes dry.

Drinkability: This is a pretty solid brew overall. I have been happy with pretty much everything I have had from Smuttynose, and they distribute in Illinois now.

Great tasting beer. Caramel taste - very hoppy. If you like heavy american, this is great stuff.

The pour itself was a reddish brown - very deep. The taste was bready with hints of fruit and whisky - very pleasant and smooth. I highly recommend this beer.
