S’Muttonator Double Bock displays the characteristically full malt flavor that can only come from using the best German specialty malts, and a traditional decoction mashing technique. The extra effort also adds a lot of extra time to each batch, but that’s the only way to get the nuttiness, toffee notes and smooth character beer drinkers expect from a double bock.

22 oz. bomber bottle that has a classic label of a long horned goat standing tall of his pasture. The face on the goat says it all. It's saying "I'm going to head butt you till you get out of my face!" Under the label in the far right hand corner is the bottled year. Mine was the 2006 vintage. I believe that was the last bottled year for this Doppelbock. The far right side of the label is just the Government warning. The far left side has 3 seperate sentences. The top one talks about how it's brewed in limited quantities, the second one talks about the German ingredients that went into this beer, and the last one talks about how it took 30 hours to brew a single batch.

Appearance: When poured into a Pilsner glass, this Doppelbock was a clear caramel brown color with a massive 5 inch initial head of foam. The color of this foam was a light beige color. This massive head of foam had really good retention that left behind a 1 inch tan film and a fair amount of sticky tan spots of lace around the glass. The massive head of foam was nice to see, but I still liked the color of this Doppelbock a bit more.

Smell: This Doppelbock's aroma was lightly sweet yet malty and slightly wheaty all at the same time. The aroma consisted of dark roasted malts, roasted wheat, sweet caramel, and dried dark fruits at the finish. When it was swirled around, more wheat and dark fruits emerged, but this time they had a small coating of alcohol on them. The alcohol did not take over the aroma because the sweetness of the beer controlled it.

Taste: The taste was sweet and malty, but not wheaty like the aroma. It's funny. It starts off with sweet roasted malts and then it goes directly into a sweet and alcoholic flavor burst. That means the sweetness of the caramel and the dark fruits a covered up by an alcoholic blanket. The alcohol was not overwhelming, but it will warm you up. The taste isn't done just yet. This sweet alcoholic flavor burst is followed up by more malts, but this time their dry roasted and not sweet roasted like they were in the beginning. In the end, it could have used more dark flavors and less alcohol, but it's still an enjoyable Doppelbock taste.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel was walking the thin line between being a medium bodied beer and a full bodied beer. It's hard to say which one it is. The aftertaste strated off sweet and boozy, but after about 3 seconds, the booze trails off leaving behind a slightly sweet aftertaste of sweet roasted malts and a hint of caramel.

Drinkability: Overall, it's not a Doppelbock you want to drink on a daily basis or a monthly basis because it's too sweet and boozy. The alcohol won't kick your ass, but it will let you that it's there. Is it worth a shot? Yeah, because it's an interesting Doppelbock that was brewed about 2 years ago. I wonder if a little more age will settle down the alcohol. Only one way to find out!

22 oz bomber with a vintage date of 2004 on the bottle, "bottle conditioned" as well.

A- Superb cappuccino-like froth on top, excellent head retention. Deep tawny glow, brown on amber with good clarity.

S- Big malty aroma, hints of caramel and raisins. Faint alcohol in the nose as well.

T&M- Impeccable smoothness within the lush full body. Rich layers of malt begin to unfold as this brew warms up a bit. Velvety coco, mildly roasted coffee, fresh baked brown bread and a kiss of caramel. Light on the hopping, ample bitterness is still around after a year. Clean and sharp alcohol warms the palate.

D- A sipping brew to say the least, I could sip this one all night long. Paired this one with a beer braised pork roast and later with fresh baked brownies.

This pours a dark reddish color with a smallish head. The smell has a slight malt and fruit,prunes,raisins, scent,but it's not very strong. The flavors are a real fruit taste with some alcohol aftertaste. This isn't really anything special. The m/f is heavy with a flavor that's not well balanced. This is an average, or below, double bock and I wouldn't go out of my way to get this again.

I expected to love this beer but sorry I don't. Poured almost all head, beige color, long lasting. Smell is really quite mild. Yes there's malt but it's not a complex malt smell. Color is a hazy rusty brown. Taste is indeed malty but again it's not a complex malt, and to be honest I thought it was kind of salty. Finally, I did expect the high alcohol yet this beer still seems hot to me.

BOTTLE: 650ml brown glass bottle with apt label art and a branded black and lime pry-off pressure cap purchased at a local bottle shop.

Expectations are high given its current 91 rating. 9.8% ABV. Reviewed as a doppelbock per the label. "Bottle conditioned 2014." Served cold into a pilsner glass and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Half finger wide. White colour. Decent creaminess and thickness. Not real frothy. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is pretty good for the ABV - about 3-4 minutes.

BODY: Dark copper with amber hues. Average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Translucent. Semitransparent.

Appears aptly carbonated. Not unique or special for the style, but certainly within conventions, and appealing.

AROMA: My first whiff yields only a simplistic impression of generic malty sweetness.

Trying again, I pick up on caramel, some brown sugar, vague indistinct fruit, and caramelized fruits and malts.

Hmm. There aren't many notes in the aroma. As it warms a bit, though, it does start to take shape: light fig, faint sugarplum, the beginnings of a trace of red's not a muted or subdued aroma, it's just a withdrawn one.

Pleasant, but light in strength.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Caramel, prune, light fig, a kiss of sugarplum, caramelized indistinct fruit, amber malts, traces of cherry and juicy red apple, brown malts, dextrins, Vienna malts, and some fruity breadiness on the finish. I find myself working in overdrive to find these notes; it's not a reticent or muted flavour profile, and it does have depth of flavour, but everything melts together so nicely it's tough to break it down into its constituent notes. A bit of cinnamon spice; if they played that note up this beer might be wonderful. A hint of pecan, a whisper of walnut...this is a tough nut to crack.

The malty sweetness is well-checked, and the fruitiness guides the flavour profile nicely, tying it together with a rare (for a doppelbock) cohesion. As it warms, fruitcake enters the equation. Maybe even some raisin. The subtlety of the dark fruit is notable, yet it retains a distinctly German vibe, never venturing into Belgian dark fruit territory - I guess because it never tastes candied?

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes come through. I'm surprised many other reviewers are calling it warm and/or boozy; I find the alcohol quite well concealed.

Overall, I find it well-balanced and cohesive, and it almost feels like a gestalt whole. Complex enough for a doppelbock, with surprising subtlety and an initial inaccessibility. Sure, it could be more intricate and nuanced, but that goes for damn near every beer. Sweetness is high in general, but just right for the style.

TEXTURE: Sticky, smooth, wet, full-bodied, heavy, thick, and lush without ever venturing into syrupy or viscous territory. It's only slightly over-carbonated, and while it's unrefreshing I do think it's a quenching meal-in-a-glass kind of brew. You could see a glass of this nourishing a tired German monk on a winter's night, and I suppose in the end that's what the style is designed for.

Has a good overall presence on the palate. This mouthfeel complements the taste quite well, but doesn't elevate the brew beyond the potential of the taste.

OVERALL: Drinkable for its high ABV, but nevertheless a very filling beer. You wouldn't want more than one in a night, and while I'll finish the bottle alone, I don't know that I'd recommend that to most beer drinkers. This will definitely satisfy fans of the style, and it's one of the better American offerings in the style I've had recently, but it's certainly not world-class. Smuttynose has done a good job brewing the intended style and I could see myself aging one or two of these if I had the disposable income on hand (I don't). It's perhaps a bit more subtle than my palate is currently able to contend with; I'll have to revisit this one when I'm more experienced. In any case, it's certainly worth trying at least once.

The S'muttonator delivers a fairly clear (it's bottle-conditioned), reddish-chestnut body beneath a short cap of creamy light-tan foam. The head retention is fair, and it leaves a decent amount of splotchy lace at the outset of the glass. The nose is sweetish, lightly toasty, caramelish, and even a touch fruity from the Vienna malts. It's mildly zesty on the tongue with a very fine-bubbled and natural carbonation, and a medium-full body that's smoothly dextrinous. Rich, toasty, "juicy", sweet, molasses and prune-like, and subtly husky malts dominate the flavor; laced with floral and spicy hop flavors as well as a quick, sharp slap of alcohol. The bitterness is more than firm enough, however, to reign it in and keep it from becoming cloying. The occassional caress of alcohol appears to "warm" in the finish (9.8% is a touch high... Paulaner's Salvator is only 7.5%), but other than that it's very clean, superbly balanced, and exceptionally well-done. It's very nice indeed with the exception that it is a little over-the-top as far as alcohol content is concerned. Worth trying...

This beer pours a reddish brown, looks more like a red ale as suppose to the darker brown in most doppelbock's I've tried. I know this style can range in color but I just expect more brown than reddish. It leaves a small off white head that kind of lingers with the brew. The smell of this beer seems off to me, more of a grape sour smell comes out which throws me off a bit. As I continue to smell this beer more candied darker fruit begins to rise from the depths which now intrigues me. The taste is malty with a nice balance of hops to counteract that sweetness on the palate. Caramel starts off on your palate with medium carbonation followed quickly by a sharp herbal bitterness and finishes with some what mellow nutmeg spice characters. Overall this isn't the best beer from Smuttynose but decent.

I could have sworn I reviewed this beer a couple of weeks ago. I guess that what you get at 9.8% that goes down like candy. A very sweet Dopplebock, seemingly loaded with candied malts. A little too heavy on the sugar. If you like sweet beers this is the one for you. Mouthfeel is a little too coating, lingering aftertaste, pleasent, but a little much. This beer has a very earthy feel.

Overall a nice offering, a little bit of a let down on the Big Beer Series. I have a couple cellaring, so we'll see.

Bomber bottled in 2008. So this beer's got 8-18 months on it, meethinks. Poured into wide-mouthed snifter ( not my first choice, I need to upgrade my glassware)

A- pours impressively, active head and pretty solid carbonation. Beer matches the brown bottle, and the foam is like the tan of the side label. Nice head formation.

S- I can smell the malty sweetness from a mile away. Really smells like raisins or figs.

T- Slightly bitter on the tongue, a mild acidity, but it is gone in an instant. Malty, for sure, a roasted coffee flavor comes through after the first sip. The malt seems a bit smoky, but just a bit. Pretty good sweetness, not overbearing, but for sure the main focal point. Good, not great. The ABV is hidden exceptionally well.

M- Pretty darn good. Thick, luscious, slow and lingering, full-bodied. This is a beer brewed with a LOT of malt, if that's your thing this is the beer for you.

D- I like the big beer series from Smuttynose, and this one is no exception. Not my favorite of theirs, but still a rock-solid brew. A pretty good take on an underrated style, this is a good beer that is well worth the price of admission. I can't imagine having more than one at a time, but I enjoyed this beer and will stock up for sure, this would make a great trade extra.

a: into my Allagash glass, gives a two-finger dark khaki head, thick and slow to recede with a healthy layer retained, some lacing, the beer is a dark ruby tinged brown in color, lovely

s: big aromas of prunes and toffee with a mild tannic undertone, other dried fruits - figs, blackberry, and cherry - give an almost jammy character, nearly burn graham cracker crusts, dark and nutty underneath the dried tree fruit sweetness, mild noble hops give a touch of spice

m: carbonation on the low side of medium, generally smooth but with a touch of fizz, full-medium body

t: sweet and juicy prunes, dried blackberries and cherries coated in dusty black cocoa, sweet upfront with a nicely balancing fruit tannin sneaking in after swallowing, hop flavors low but they've got a moderate bitterness in there that I enjoy - but it may be covering some of the complexity, tree fruit and dark chocolate flavors linger long

d: definitely one to take your time with, but good drinkability for its weight

One of the thickest aromas I've ever smelled in a doppelbock. Tons of sweet caramel present with toffee, rum, and a bit of booze. Malty to the nth degree.

Pours a reddish copper color in the glass with a pretty good sized head on it.

The taste doesn't surprise me at all, thankfully. Malty to the max with lots of caramel checking in with raisin, some bread and rum. Slightly boozy on the finish with just a touch of hops helping to close the beer out. Beautiful thing, really.

This may be my new favorite doppelbock. This is everything I would like this style of beer to be, and one I would probably use to introduce people to the style.

It took me at least a year of looking to find this.
I thought it was interesting that a brewer who specialized in British styles could make such a great lager, albeit a very dark one.
While there are many things to like about this beer, its full, malty taste and balanced, smooth finish is one to remember.
I'm also will not forget to look for another.
Listed on the "1001" this deserves to be there.

Bomber from Lebanon Health Food Store in Lebanon NH for $5.99. Bottle conditioned in 2010. Served cold in a chilled tulip.

Cloudy orange brown brew gives 1" of thick tan head that percolates gently and leaves thick lace as it settles. Aroma is dense and thick with the sweetness and zesty esters of raisins, figs, dried cherries. It smells like red liccorice. Taste leads off with a big dose of fruity esters and peppery alcohol that completely dominates from start to finish. In the middle a little toasty malt and warm vanilla appears, but it is mostly overwhelmed by the esters and EtOH. The finish has a big warming alcohol bite that sticks around for quite a while, but a little lingering cherry ester and vanilla is also present to even it out a bit. The feel is slick with a small but zesty carbonation, finishes mostly dry but with a little sticky resin. As I get maybe half way through the bottle, I notice a bit of dry citrus rind hop mingling amongst the other pungent flavors and lingering in the finish... can't say if it was there all along or if it came out with airing/ warming.

This is a really interesting and tasty brew, as long as you don't mind an insane level of esters. Esterbomb fo' shizzle. Definitely a sipper.

22oz. bottle

Pours a clear, rich chestnut brown with reddish hues. Has a thin white head that maintains with decent lacing on the glass.

Aroma is sweet and malty with some caramal and bready tones. Also has a slight fruitiness to it.

Sweet and malty upfront with some nice caramel and bready flavors. This is followed by rich dark fruitiness and a slight hop bitterness. Finishes sweet with a slight alcohol taste. The alcohol taste becomes more pronounced as it warms.

Big full body, plenty of carbonation.

A nice drinking dopplebock, but there are others that I enjoy more.

This Double Bock pours a pretty dull red with a small head that sticks around, there is tiny bits of weak lacing. The smell is pure malt and some spicy background perhaps the yeast or some spice not yet clear to me. I enjoy bock and this double does not let me down. It has clean smooth flavor that only hints of alcohol and some nice malty aftertaste. The mouth feel is awesome smooth and thick yet not to thick. I will be buying more of this beer.

This is a big american brew. Certainly inspired by the doppelbock style (or perhaps samiclaus?), but not very malty. It's difficult to rate this one. It's REALLY well-crafted, but it's just not a doppel.

A: Medium-brownish orange, off-white head, some retention.

S: More fruityness than the average doppel (given its strength, perhaps the fermentation got a little too vigorous); brown sugar; slightly peppery.

T: Bread, brown sugar, grassy/slightly peppery hop spice, dark (slightly burnt) caramel. Bitterness is well-balanced. Alcohol is INCREDIBLY well-hidden, but it seems like it could use some lagering to smooth out the flavours.

M: Moderate body is really well-attenuated (surprisingly thin for its weight, it lacks the malty backbone of most doppels).

D: Perhaps a little potent for Lent. Not a session lager.

Fabulous Dobbelbock! Dark garnet pour with a white head. Heavy malt aroma with some fruit. Taste is very bold with malt and fairly complex with lots of little flavours that come through in the aftertaste. Fruit, chocolate, yeast. Full body that just pleases. I adore this beer and will be on the hunt for more.

Bottled on 3-21-17, 8.2% ABV

Look - Pours a dark ruby/amber color with lighter copper highlights, short cap of khaki head, no lacing.
Aroma - Honey, grain, toast, earthy spice. Mild aroma.
Taste - Thick and full bodied malt, bread crust, syrupy sweet, heavy toast, heather honey, very light medjool date note. Mid sip the hops come in with a substantial but balanced bitterness. Slight floral spice. Sweetness dies down towards the end and the beer finishes dry, crisp and nutty. No alcohol to speak of.
Feel - Medium bodied, slick at first, fine carbonation bubbles, dry and crisp finish. No alcohol warmth. Incredible, reminiscent of a dubbel.

Overall - Very unique doppelbock. Hoppier than German versions but it really pays off. The refreshing bitterness and crisp, dry finish put this into a league of it's own. A must try if you're a lager fanatic.

Pretty quick head and no residual foam. Only a few sluggish bubbles. Medium ruby and bronze mix. Looks a little syrupy.

Super malty, toasty, and sweet caramelized fruits. This smells great!

Lots of sweet toasty malts. Add some yeast and you get rich bread with a caramelized plum and purple grape jam. Maybe some blackberries too. Syrupy palate with a little heat. The alcohol comes together with teh flavors and palate well. This is an awesome Doppelbock!!

Poured into a lager glass.
The appearance was a nice looking dark copper to milky brown color with a modest transparency about it. Two finger sustaining white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some spotty lace speckled the sides of the glass.
The aroma had a super nice blend of sweet red apples, mild earthy notes, crisp sweet nuts, subtle roast, some dark bread and a touch of grassy to woody sweetness at the end.
The flavor was moderately sweet with the earthy and bready notes making a play at the balance which was nice and fitting. Mostly a dark bready to nutty and apple-like aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt a bit under, but I wasn't too bothered by that. ABV felt on par. Slight stickiness but not cloying. Dark bready to nutty and malty finish.
Overall, really nice doppelbock well worthy of coming back to.
