Formerly Smuttynose S'muttonator (Big Beer Series)

S’Muttonator Double Bock displays the characteristically full malt flavor that can only come from using the best German specialty malts, and a traditional decoction mashing technique. The extra effort also adds a lot of extra time to each batch, but that’s the only way to get the nuttiness, toffee notes and smooth character beer drinkers expect from a double bock.

Bomber bottled in 2008. So this beer's got 8-18 months on it, meethinks. Poured into wide-mouthed snifter ( not my first choice, I need to upgrade my glassware)

A- pours impressively, active head and pretty solid carbonation. Beer matches the brown bottle, and the foam is like the tan of the side label. Nice head formation.

S- I can smell the malty sweetness from a mile away. Really smells like raisins or figs.

T- Slightly bitter on the tongue, a mild acidity, but it is gone in an instant. Malty, for sure, a roasted coffee flavor comes through after the first sip. The malt seems a bit smoky, but just a bit. Pretty good sweetness, not overbearing, but for sure the main focal point. Good, not great. The ABV is hidden exceptionally well.

M- Pretty darn good. Thick, luscious, slow and lingering, full-bodied. This is a beer brewed with a LOT of malt, if that's your thing this is the beer for you.

D- I like the big beer series from Smuttynose, and this one is no exception. Not my favorite of theirs, but still a rock-solid brew. A pretty good take on an underrated style, this is a good beer that is well worth the price of admission. I can't imagine having more than one at a time, but I enjoyed this beer and will stock up for sure, this would make a great trade extra.

Always interested to try anything ending with -ator, this doesn't disappoint. Dark brown pour with little off-white foam. Rich aromas of dark fruit abound mixed with sweet malt. Flavor follows similarly. Good American stab at this style. Would have again.

It remains a warm, humid evening here in Baltimore at the Brass Tap, so decided to 'finish' my exploration of the bock/doppelbock selection w/a 12oz bottle (3/21/17) poured in stages into another 8oz snifter

(12 oz bottle, bottled on 3/21/17... purchased 2-3 weeks ago at State Line... poured into a snifter)

L: burnt tawny colored liquid with way more flaky sediment floating about than anticipated... a little foam forms, but soon creeps down and back to one corner of the glass in a crescent shape with a sun flare of thin cap jutting out

S: heavenly, cavernously-deep malty aromas - medium-dark caramel, hint of show leather... mellow sultana vinous note quickly emerges... faint essence of perfumy booze... mmm, expression and potency on par with some of the German imports

T: murky swath of sweetish, toasty bread crust, dried fruit (with a hint of date), and an herbal, leafy, lingering hop flavor and bitterness... the bitterness still has a little bite left... has a lovely, mildly-spiced caramel sugar cookie thing, but doesn't altogether deviate much from the standard reddish-brown angle on the style

F: dumpy-plush; medium-full bodied but rife with lil divots and pockmarks... very delicate chewy texture, but the alcohol cuts it a touch, lightens it up, while letting off a rather mellow warmth

O: looks time-worn but tastes quite fine despite it... probably won't rush back to grab some more old bottles, but certainly will keep my eye out for this now, though I don't think it'd quite replace my Troegenator as my (local) go-to

Appearance - The beer poured like a dishwater blonde barleywine.

Smell - The nose was sweet like grapes with a grassy presence.

Taste - The malts come to the front with a strong green grape presence with a grassy malt backbone. The grape presence is so pronounced, I am made to think the beer was aged in wine barrels. The sweetness carries into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - The beer was an almost chewy mouthfeel with a full body.

Overall - While a good example of the style, the beer seems overly sweet.

Bottled 3/2017 - 8.2% ABV

Appearance - chestnut color with beige head

Smell - raisin, chocolate, toffee, honey

Taste - honey, raisin, toffee, honey, hazelnut

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, medium carbonation, moderately sweet upfront, crisp, nuttiness breadiness and some bitterness on the back end

Overall - nice iteration of a dopplebock - a bit sweeter than most, but otherwise nice flavors here. Certainly worth a shot

Price Point - $3.25/12 oz single

Poured into a custom grip shaped glass: color is amber, hints of brown, head is very light tan which presents 1/2 inch thick and then dissipates to a thin top, head is finely bubbled.

Smell is a bit sharp with some boozy esters (i don't pick it up in flavors), then moderate munich/vienna malt sweetness.

Taste is moderately sweet, flavors of bready, earth, light honey, toast, nuttiness; a bit bitter, compared to some other doppelbocks

Mouthfeel is crisp, a bit bitter and not cloying.

Overall a good doppelbock, a little different with some prominent hop components but overall good malt presence and flavor.

Poured into a lager glass.
The appearance was a nice looking dark copper to milky brown color with a modest transparency about it. Two finger sustaining white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some spotty lace speckled the sides of the glass.
The aroma had a super nice blend of sweet red apples, mild earthy notes, crisp sweet nuts, subtle roast, some dark bread and a touch of grassy to woody sweetness at the end.
The flavor was moderately sweet with the earthy and bready notes making a play at the balance which was nice and fitting. Mostly a dark bready to nutty and apple-like aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt a bit under, but I wasn't too bothered by that. ABV felt on par. Slight stickiness but not cloying. Dark bready to nutty and malty finish.
Overall, really nice doppelbock well worthy of coming back to.
