12oz bottle purchased as a single somewhere, perhaps Yankee Spirits or Julio's, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" white head over the ultra-clear light golden brew. What head there is lasts pretty well, with average lacing. Aroma is a nice balance between wheat and clove, nice for the style. Taste is wheat malt upfront, heads into a menagerie of clove, and citrus flavors, amongst others. Mouthfeel and drinkability are both nice for this flavorful pale wheat, three words that don't always go together.

Presentation: Comes in a brown, 12 oz bottle. Different label from the normal Smuttynose beers — a very funny cartoon drawing instead of a photo. Brewed in May 2005.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, opaque golden color. Small head with average retention, but lots of thick lacing on the sides of the glass as the head dissipates.

Smell: Strong, sweet wheat aroma with yeast notes. Few of the fruit aromas I'd normally associate with the style.

Taste: Refreshing, spicy wheat flavor tempered by some bitter notes. Occasional hints of banana and lemon, but again, more restrained than the normal American craft brew take on the hefeweizen.

Mouthfeel: A little bit on the thin side, slightly disappointing.

Drinkability: The taste isn't as engaging as a normal hefeweizen, but this would still be an enjoyable beer for a hot summer day.

I'm a big fan of hefeweizens and Smuttynose's beers, so I was excited to track this one down. While it's not a bad beer, Weizenheimer lacks any special qualities to merit choosing it over stronger offerings like the Brooklyn hefeweizen. A fairly standard offering, good but not amazing.

12 oz bottle poured into a traditional Weisse glass, a golden straw color with a nice white head, kept alive for a good long time by large cascading bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Bready wheat aroma with an herbal hop punch and a smattering of malty spice. Crisp and quite refreshing, with hints of sweet citrus to balance the grassy dry malt and mild bitterness. Just a slight tingle is left on the tip of the tongue from the carbonation. American wheats usually are openly lacking in some way, but this is quite a nice, flavorful example. Certainly worth a try.

Smuttynose Weizenheimer Ale
12 oz brown bottle. Brewed and bottle in May 2005
Served in a Schneider Weisse glass

Pours a hazy and cloudy light orange color. Great head on top, nice lacings too.

Whiffs of wheat, bread and distinct yeast.

What a great beer. Bready and juicy mouthfeel. Smuttynose nails that foreign yeast flavor. Very clean, yet spicy and fruity on the palate. A very easy drinking beverage. This is a solid American hefeweizen and an excellent summertime offering.

Bottled May 2005

Pours a lightly hazy yellow gold with a 1/2 inch creamy eggshell white head. Some rings of lace. Sweet wheat malt, spicy, bubblegum and lemon aromas.

Taste is spicy and bitter. Lemony. That's it. Bitter finish, crisp mouth. Only OK. Another relatively dull American wheat.

Pours a bright hazy yellow with a finger of dense white head and decent retention. Smell is lemon, cloves, and grassy hops. Taste was very assertive clove spiciness uipfront giving way to a lemony slightly metallic aftertaste. Mouthfeel was medium/thin and a little fizzy. Decent beer, but I won't go out of my way to drink again.

served in pint glass at glb
glowing golden yellow color with a creamy head. decent retention; better than decent lacing. yeast, esters (spec. fruit) in the nose. tastes esthery, very light on hops, slight citrus. yeast is pleasantly noticable as are banana and a tiny touch of spice. clean, sweet finish wrapped around a subtle hops snap and slight tanginess. excellent balance. smooth, light-bodied, and crisp on the swallow.
great hot-day weizen. i need to find this in bottles.

This is the best beer label I've ever seen.

Things go down a bit when I pour the actual beer. Standard wheat yellow hazy with almost no head, although there's a tiny bit of fizz.

Smell is muted banana and a light hoppiness. Bits of coriander in there as well. Also a bit of a Robitussin/metal smell going on that's not that pleasant. Little bit of clove, too.

Taste was kind of watery standard hefeweizen, I thought. Not bad, but the spices that were in the nose didn't jump out in my mouth, and it just seemed very bland and average to me.

Overall: For a summer wheat beer, I think this one is pretty weak. Thirst-quenching, I suppose, but the flavor just isn't there. Not necessarily a terrible beer, but in most places you can buy this, there are probably a half-dozen beers of the same style that are much better.

Purchased a six pack in Avalon with a few other weisse beers to bring in the summer. Cute labeling caught my wife's eye. Don't remember seeing any best before notches.
Must be filtered; poured a clear yellow with faint carbonation, if any. Head was only attainable after a hard pour. Even then, it was decidedly short lived and limp.
Just about no aroma at all, even after sticking my nose way far into the brew.
Your average hefe and won't offend most folks. Finishes smooth and clean. Faint malts are the main flavor, nothing else holds up much.
Not very drinkable. Really couldn't hold its own up to the other two weisse we enjoyed over the long weekend. I won't be buying this one again.

nice brew.
pours a slightly hazy pale yellow with hints of orange. it developes a decent 1 inch head thats fairly fizzy and disappears quickly leaving a light rim of white.
smell was citrusy fruits, slightly bready with notes of clove and coriander spices.
taste was a bold hit of spice that lends itself into a sweet fruitiness. it finishes slightly dry and is quite clean and crisp in th mouth. refreshing and tasty.
not a wow beer but very tasty indeed.

Pours a mostly clear golden yellow with a rocky long-lasting head.

Aroma is, well, odd. There is some fruit (banana, mango), spicy phenols suggesting coriander and lemon peel, and some maltiness. On the negative side are medicinal phenols and an overall abrasiveness. It seems like it wants to be either a wit or a weizen but can't commit to either.

Unfortunately that abrasiveness also dominates the palate. Some fruit is there as well as the more pleasant phenols. But there is also a tannic astringency and an over-abundance of bitterness. It is really difficult to get past these negative qualities and into the heart of the beer, but something really went wrong here. Whether that something was in the concept or the execution is hard to say, but something is out of whack, at least in the two bottles I sampled. The fact that the label is incorrect and the freshness date of May is suspect doesn't help. I'd pass on another.

Not my normal style of beer, but because it is a Smutty, I had to try it.

This one is golden yellow and slightly cloudy with a fast fading white head. Even pored this one aggressively, and still the runaway head. (Later I noticed that it does cling to the side of my glass)

The smell is strong. Fruit and spice overpower the aroma in a very inviting way.

This beer has a bold flavor (spice) that I can not put my finger on. It leads me to take another sip, just to try and figure out where I know that flavor from. A wonderful mix of mystery spice and hops.

This beer is very drinkable, smooth and easy going, yet has enough flavor to satisfy those who need a bit of bite. I could definitely have another.

Another job well done by the people at Smutty.

This beer from the smuttynose family is delicious, it pours a clear rich gold color. The head is a thin white lace that sticks to the side of the glass. The smell is of lemon and grass. The taste is smooth most prominate flavors on you palate are honey, lemon rinds, and bitter. This beer is something you would crack open on a hot day. It would pair well with a nice grilled shrimp or chicken salad.
