Formerly Smuttynose Winter Ale

Smuttynose Winter Ale is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Stylistically reminiscent of a Belgian Abbey Double, it features fruity aromas and flavor, balanced by soft Crystal hops. Warming, mellow & pleasantly complex, Smuttynose Winter Ale is your perfect cold weather companion.

On tap at the Manchester Airport, waiting for my flight to Florida.
The beer was a dark brown color with a sizable tan head. A bit of lace was apparent.
The aroma was of brown sugar, sweet fruit, and caramel malts.
Taste of caramel, raisins, a bit of spiciness.
Sweet, substantial mouthfeel.
Not your typical winter beer. A nice take on the part of Smuttynose.

Pours dark amber and slightly cloudy. Head fades quickly with minimal lacing. Nice fruity aroma and taste is bold, complex and sweet. I like this brewery and I like this beer.

Pours a deep foggy amber. Deep festive smell of spices that lets you know you’re ready for a winter voyage. Coats mouth roughly and finshes crisp. Taste strong hoppy notes. Overall a decent seasonal entry.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Hazy mahogany/copper pour with 2 fingers of foamy white head. Lasts awhile with great lacing. Overall a good looking brew.

S: Sweet and malty... dark fruits and mild spice.

T/F: Toasted malts and brown sugar... sweet with mild spice. Was hoping for more dark fruit... only mild plum and raisin. Bready... mild hopping for balance at the finish. Sticky on the tongue.. ABV well hidden.

O: A reasonable dubbel... but far from the best I've ever had. Glad I tried it... probably wouldn't seek it out again.

Took the risk after seeing ‘Best By 04/23/18’ on the bottle. It’s a dubbel, what could go wrong??

Nice burnt Siena color, crimson-hued with an ivory head of foam that settles quickly and doesn’t leave any heavy lacing initially.

Lots of dark fruit and molasses on the nose, with hints of sweet caramel to round it out. It’s a fairly subtle nose for this Belgian style, but very well balanced.

Sweet toasted sugar and caramel hit first, with a subtle molasses bitterness that follows. A light spice and thorough breadiness serve the backbone. As it settles on the tongue, getting some citrusy qualities as well.

Medium carb and a little bit of a lighter body than expected. Finishes just a little too bitter than the style would traditionally have, but smooth and rich overall.

This doesn’t remind me of a good Belgian dubbel at all except for the ABV! Has sweetness up front, but almost too sugary tasting. But it’s the back end I really dislike—a lot of bitterness, the absence of which is one of my favorite things about Belgians—they just finish so cleanly and beautifully. Belgian hops do not a Belgian beer make! We’ll see what my husband thinks—he typically does not like Belgian beer, but since this doesn’t taste like a Belgian, we’ll see!

This used to be their Winter Ale and changed its name a few years ago and now has actually changed its essence. It used to be in the mid 6 ABV and now is 8.3. It used to be more reminiscent of a Scotch Ale and now it has that banana Belgian flavor. Smuttynose is really maddening in this way. Their beers might change from their original recipe or abv and they won't let you know. Stilll, I love this brewery and am sad to see them go to auction.

OK. So the beer itself is pretty good, but unlike the name it's better if not coming at you cold. That's typical for this style though. I'm no expert but I know what I like. I loved the Winter Ale. I like the Dubbel. Here's hoping Olive finds a good new home. Cheers.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

L---Clear, dark brown with a red tint. Medium, off-white head that faded quickly and left no lacing.

S---Boozy with raisins.

T---Sweet, with candy sugars noticeable. Raisins and molasses.

F---Thick. Heavy with alcohol. Carbonation is minimal.

O---A pretty good stab by Americans at a Belgian dubbel. I'll get this one again if I see it.
