Style: German Pilsener

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Made for taking a break from the Sturm und Drang of modern life, this elegantly refreshing pilsner was created with German malt balanced with the spicy tang of Czech Saaz hops. The bread and biscuit flavors of the grain are topped with the floral character of the Noble hop, which may just get you to shimmy into your favorite lederhosen, bust into a quick schuhplattler and loudly proclaim, “Das ist Vunderbar!” Prost! 33 IBU (AKA - Short Batch #11)

Pours a hazy golden color with less than a pinky sized head. Lacings are left to coat the glass as I casually sip this refreshing pilsner down. I really cannot smell much of the ingredients, except for a faint lingering of hops. After the third sip, I noticed it becoming more bitter, but nonetheless enjoyable. It coats the tongue (after about the third sip) and leaves surrounding bitter notes. Overall, I enjoyed this beer as much as I enjoyed the atmosphere of the brewery. Refreshing, casual, and just enough ABV to allow me to run a grill! Happy imbibing!

I am a bit puzzled by the reviews that describe a dark yellow or even burnt orange color. The bottles I had poured a VERY pale yellow and fairly cloudy, almost like a wit. But the flavor was in no way pale. This is a very tasty pilsner. I don't think I would mistake it for a German-made pils but it definitely tastes "German-ish" which not all American versions of German pils do. Some reviews have described this as having a "caramellized malt" character...I didn't get that at all. Seems like pure pilsner malt to me. Grassy and clean with very delicate hops aroma. This was from a Beer of the Month Club selection and I already wish I had more than the three bottles.

Nice pilsner. Lacks the bite of a Czech, but a little more going on than a German. Not the most interesting style, but no complaints here.

You won't find many tastier and well made pilsners than this one, an absolutely superb example of a pretty basic style of beer, this is simply excellent.

Bottle poured into glass stein.
A-Beautiful cloudy (especially for a pilsner) burnt golden orange hue, very little head with aggressive pour,
little lacing.
S-Toasted bread, malts, sweet dried peaches or maybe even apple.
T-Toasted, almost burnt malts bring on a bitterness that nicely balances against
the sweet peach & dried apricot that quickly follows, finishes slightly on the bitter side
of center.
M-Nice carbonation & quite creamy for a pilsner
O-Not usually my preferred style but I really like it a lot. Not surprising considering it's from Smuttynose.

On draught. Good basic pilsner nothing fancy, not in the ranks of exact German pilsners but I prefer it to Victory Pils (a bit too hoppy to me-still great beer though). This poured a medium to rich yellow with decent head and lace. The nose was bright and malty, no real hop present. The mouthfeel was light to medium. The taste was clean, bright and malty like the wheat naan they have at Trader Joe's (odd but that's what it evoked). No real spice/hop to it but crisp and bright. The only thing really lacking was the awesome chalkly hints that the German versions often have.
