Smuttynose Robust PorterSmuttynose Robust Porter

Brewed by:
Smuttynose Brewing Company
New Hampshire, United States

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Aggressive pour yields an opaque deep brown brew with subtle garnet highlights and a frothy inch and a half tan head that lingers, eventually dissipating and leaving sheets of lacing all around.

Roast malt and coffee dominate the aroma initially, with hints of vanilla and chocolate lurking I'm the background. There's a burnt brown sugar sweetness present.

Flavor follows suit, with huge roast malt character giving way to chocolate mid palate, which lingers into the slightly bitter finish. There's an underpinning of slightly acrid coffee and char. Citrus hops are subtle, and blend well.

Body is a on the full side and fairly creamy, with fairly low carbonation and a bit of alcohol warmth.

Great example of the style, with enough chocolate and coffee to accompany the roast malt character. A little heavy on the char, but very rich.

12ounce bottle -> New Belgium globe

OMG!!!! This stuff is amazing. It pours up a beautiful black with a luscious 2 finger head, excellent retention and lots of lacing rings. The smell is a fresh aromatic coffee note. Taste is a pleasing malt sweetness with a well balanced coffee and dark chocolate finish. Mouthfeel is amazing. I'm sad because they don't sell this in Alabama and I only bought one bottle in North Carolina,

Appearance: Very dark brown with tan head. Above average lacing

Smell: Carmelly, toasty, roasty

Taste: Stong malt with wholesome spicy hops that balances well. Malts are toasty, smokey, dark caramelly. Hops are spicy, bitter and somewhat herbally. Def a "Robust" Porter with this amount of hop.

Feel: Medium bodied, smooth, delicate-light carbonation with long finish.
