Brewed by:
Smuttynose Brewing Company
New Hampshire, United States

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Appears opaque black with a thin and creamy tan head that leaves good lacing on the glass. Aroma is richly present with a dark, roasted coffee-like character with traces of cocoa. Beautiful, rich porter taste, slightly sweet and balancing the bitterness nicely. Smooth and silky texture.

An outstanding porter. Lives up to its 'robust' label yet very approachable and delicious.

Dark, opaque brew with a generous tan head that shrinks into lacing very slowly. Smell is your standard porter, with roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Taste is more than your standard porter, not just coffee and chocolate notes but extra variety in the malt flavor.

I believe that this is the best porter i've tasted yet. Everything i want in a porter with a little extra flavor. Wish i could get this more often.

Half finger head on a very dark near jet black body. Very nice lacing. Aroma is nicely coffee filled though a touch mild with toasted malt. The flavor follows nicely with a more full coffee flavor with smokey undertones. Medium body and moderate carbonation. The flavor is very nice and full for a porter. The coffee stiffens this up and makes it more memorable.

Poured into an Allagash flute on 5/8/12

Best by 4/03/12 printed on the bottle. Whoops.

Very dark brown; hardly any light gets through this critter. The head is a sandy brown hue and crests at two and a half fingers. 1/3rd inch layer of retention. Decent amount of lace.

The nose finds plenty of the roasted amid dry chocolate and dark grains. Dusty cocoa. Overtones of earthiness. The aroma is smooth, simple and quite nice. Doesn't smell too sweet.

The flavor is similar, though it has much more intensity than the aroma. Roasted coffee and chocolate abound, the former leaving a modest lingering bitterness. Tangy roast and grains. Earthy hops. This is really enjoyable.

The feel leans comfortably toward the full side. Smooth, aside from a granular undercurrent and mild carbonation tickling. Roasted residuals all over the finish.

Huh. If Robust Porter is this good with over a month beyond it's "best by" date, I'm curious to see how much "better" it is fresh. Haha.

Pours a light black with a tan head that lingers and laces.

Smells of chocolate, coffee, sweet caramel malt along with some spicy/earthy hops...almost a hint of wood or oak.

Taste is up front coffee and chocolate that goes into a more astringent, coffee middle with a hint of grapefruit hop character, before ending on a chocolate finish that lingers along with toasted bread notes and, again, some oak/wood. Really nice flavor and what I think of when I think of the style.

Medium to lighter body with medium to low carbonation and no alcohol character.

Damned fine porter that has a dark chocolate and coffee character. It is also highly drinkable...a real winner.
