"Satchmo," is a collaboration between Smuttynose and Portsmouth's Black Trumpet Bistro. It's also a collaboration between two fungi, brewer's yeast (sacchromyces cerevisiae) and black trumpet mushrooms (craterellus cornucopioides).

Mushrooms in a beer? Never thought I'd see this

Pours a dark brown with a finger of smooth light tan head that fades moderately fast, minimal lacing

Roasty and smoky aromas, light coffee, stone fruit, and that damn mushroom, smelling more acidic than anything

Standard porter fare in terms of taste at first, smoky dark malts and creamy, and once again, the mushroom enters. This is a whole new kind of funky. It's a taste that lingers for long after the swallow

As perplexed as I am at this point, the mouthfeel is downright cruel. Very little carbonation and a thin watery body in a beer that's trying to convince me mushrooms belong in beer? Get out of here

I really, truly have no idea why I bought this. Spur of the moment decision for a good price I guess. What confuses me even more is why I actually enjoy how this tastes?? I do wish it had some character from the wine barrel aging in the taste and a fuller feel, but for some reason, I'd probably get this again

Newest batch has 4.5% abv on the label and no mention of a collaboration. Moderate pour yields a one inch head, dark copper body, and some lacing. Nose of roasted malt and mushrooms? Taste follows with some sourness and flavor from the red wine barrels as well. Rather thin feel and overall, moderately drinkable. As it warms it gets better.

The mushrooms give it a highly unique taste.
