12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours a deep black. Good clarity. Three fingers of rocky tan head retain extremely well. Thick, foamy collars of lacing. Looks great.

S: Citrus forward on the nose with vibrant aromas of tangerine and clementine. A little dank and earthy too. Roasted malt scents of charcoal and dry chocolate. A little woody and nutty.

T: Intense, biting hop bitterness. Grapefruit and lemon juice bitterness hold the tongue in a vice grip. Tangerine and tropical fruits abound. Pineapple juice. Malts do more than hold their own. Bitter black coffee and dark chocolate. Slight acidity. A touch metallic. Deep charcoal and roast. The finish is a deft balance of intense tropical hop bitterness and ashy dark malt.

M: Medium body. Very creamy and lush. Slight prickling carbonation. Very smooth.

O: A fitting tribute to the man who may very well have invented the style as we know it. Great balance between the hops and the roasted malts. A double-whammy of bitterness offered by each as well. An even more enticing buy at the affordable six pack price.

Originally released quite a while ago as part of the short batch series but now it's going to be a regular offering. The ABV is different and they've probably tweeked the recipe a bit, so I think it deserves a separate entry.

Obtained a 6-pack from the brewery for $9. Best by 08/18/13 ABV 5.7%. Smutty's recently upgraded their stamping equipment so that ABV can be printed on the bottle instead of hard-typed on the label, because they do see some batch-to-batch variability.

A: 12oz bottle poured cold into a tulip. A hard pour puts up 3/4" of dense taupe creamy head with good retention. A few minutes later it's still half there, and the half that's gone has left a super thick creamy layer of lace behind on the glass. The brew itself is pitch black, no light getting through even when held to a bright light.

S: A robust blend of resiny pine hop and bitter black malt. As it warms/ airs, the pine dissipates a bit to a more generic hop bitterness and the malt mellows to include some dark cocoa aspects.

T: Very much like the smell. A good strong dose of semi-piney hop up front coasts largely undetected past the mid-palate and hits hard again in the back of the mouth. The bitter black malt blends very well with the hop and carries through nicely throughout the sip. Mixed hoppy bitterness and bitter black malt, along with a bit of cool menthol feel, lingers very long into the finish.

M: Good smooth mouthfeel, a moderate viscosity mixed with soft carbonation, very well-balanced.

D: A really solid example of the style, very balanced and full-flavored. Nicely done, I think Mr. Noonan would be proud.
