Very Good
Smuttynose Rhye IPASmuttynose Rhye IPA
Notes: Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, bright, orange-gold color with a frothy, chunky, clingy, off-white head. Nose of toasted grains, heavy rye, and a citrus/tropical blend that is tangy and balancing. Flavors of toast and earth forward, with a solid bitterness following, both resiny and fruity. Peppery and grainy end-feel into a spiced and subtle citrus aftertaste. Light, slightly effervescent body. Dry, bitter, and spicy lingering finish. Solid, well balanced beer.

A fave east coast brewery and place.
A: Pitch perfect in a tulip. a hazy nectar orange body topped by a dense, lasting 1 finger head that laces ok.
S: Sharp, stinging, peaty rye on top of classic. spicy, floral east coast IPA profile.
T: Follows the smell, more rye than most others (And I like the style). With spicy complexity and great feel - fruity citrus notes, earhy hay, grassy notes, sweet caramel malt wrapped in a nice see saw combination that finishes spicy. Lingering earthy, spicy hops.
F: Great weight and body, a bit fuller body, fine finish. Peaty, smokey, liquor-like.

O: Great combination of flavors and aromas, nice big spicy/ fruity rye, great earthy hops. Great finish. A meditation beer packed with complex flavors.

Pours hazy gold crowned with a 2” white moussey foam cap that produces excellent lace. Big grassy nose with spicy grain. Hop driven with some grapefruit rind and resin on the tongue with some rye spice. Medium body and carbonation.

Gold amber.

Smell is dank, with skunk and burnt rubber. Taste is largely the same. I've rarely experienced these attributes this potently in a beer.

Even with the pungent and astringent flavors combined with bitter pine, this been somehow remains partly fluffy on the palate.

Spicy notes of black pepper, rye and resinous pine unfold throughout, grounded by a malty core of light caramel and nutty, toasty bread flavors. Get a hint if grapefruit deep in the middle. A pleasant bitterness and spicy rye character lingers long on the dry finish.
