Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

Look is a rich honey gold with a nice 2 finger head. Head breaks pretty quickly, and there is some lacing. The smell is of rye, piney hops and some malts. The taste is more hop forward with pine and citrus. Then the rye spice comes in, followed by the malts. Feel is medium body and carbonation.

Pretty decent beer. I enjoyed it more when I had my second taste.

Spicy notes of black pepper, rye and resinous pine unfold throughout, grounded by a malty core of light caramel and nutty, toasty bread flavors. Get a hint if grapefruit deep in the middle. A pleasant bitterness and spicy rye character lingers long on the dry finish.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a hazy burnt golden orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light lacing sliding into the beer. The smell had a sweet rye malt with a light citrus aspect backing it up nicely. The taste took the sweet and let in a light spice in the balance and still let in a delicate citrus. All blended well into the aftertaste and left a quick semi-dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonated nicely, this one had a nice bitterness rolling across my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good AIPA with a nice rye spice to tie things up. I’d have again.

Note, my beer lists 7% as the alcohol content. Nice orange amber somewhat cloudy look to this brew with an off white head. Scent is of citrus, I'm getting slight grapefruit and slight malt from the nose. Not near as bold of a flavor as I was expecting. Citric and sweet grapefruit pithy/piney in the finish. Somewhat bitter. This has a nice medium light body a solid carbonation. Nothing bad about this offering but to me, nothing exciting either.

Poured a Amber copper color in a Speigelau glass with a 1F head.

Piney, earthy aroma.

Piney taste, which is at first masked by the spicy bitterness of the finish. The pine notes are stronger with warming.

The finish is the best element in the beer: spicy hoppy, sharp bitterness, but not overdone.

Overall an excellent Rye beer. Is it a rye IPA or some kind of hybrid as suggested by another member? Founders Red's Rye IPA is closer to the style. Much different than this beer. Regardless, an excellent beer.
