Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

Cloudy golden in color with tropical fruit and citrus coming through the nose. Sort of a dominate grapefruit in flavor with a slight tan head and very minimal lacing. Light and smooth with a creamy feel and no aftertaste and acceptable bitterness. Refreshing and very easy to drink. Poured into IPA glass and relatively fresh. Overall, another fantastic offering from Smuttynose!

pours a nice amber with a thick head. nice looking IPA.

smell is fantastic, sweet aroma and only mild spice. nice different aroma than i'm used to.

taste is great. starts with slight spice, gives off sweetness and bitterness then finishes dry and slightly spicy. one of the best rye IPAs i've ever had.

not overwhelmingly spicy but still enough to show it's a rye beer. certainly worth trying, an easy drinking IPA as well.

this is my 2nd time having this beer. the other time was last year.

Caramel orange in color with a fingers worth of khaki head. Citrus, tropical fruits, and caramel aroma. Taste is very similar to the smell with a light spicy rye finish. Moderate body and light to moderate carbonation. Overall very drinkable, rye is a bit light, but is overall another very good beer by Smuttynose.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date, sample from the brewery.

Nearly clear light amber hue, sexy lacing down the glass. Dank citrus nose. Subtle hop bitterness, more of numbing hop resin with a kick in the palate from the rye. Kickin smoothness, lush medium body. Easy drinking for a beer closing in on 7.0% abv. Bitter finish, on the dry side. Bold and wanting more sip to sip.

9/11/14...pours a rusty orange amber. Thick pouring white foam. Lots of lacing. Rye tinged pine nose, good aroma. Mellow malt taste bursting into a juicy biting hop. Light sweetness.

Foamy head that settles in a rocky fashion. Leaves plenty of streaky lace on the glass. Dirty gold color with some haze and small particles floating in the glass.

Big caramel malt aroma--mild bittering hop nose. Smooth and inviting.

Far more dry than the smell indicates--the obvious presence of rye. I think this makes the hop more pronounced as well. Dry, nearly astringent finish that creates a very long aftertaste. Neutral body with a heightened level of carbonation.
