Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

An interesting combination, rye and IPA flavors, can go really well, or can go bad. I remember this being good though.

Pours a slight creamy fizzy 1 finger head that fades at a somewhat slower pace, nice layered lacing, little fluffy lacing too, some streaming bubbles on the sides to reinforce it, a hazy nectar orange colored beer.

Nose brings a nice rye right off the bat, the amount of rye aroma is crazy compared to most rye beers, a big spicy slight fruity rye, as well as the nice hops, spicy floral hops, with a mild fruity citrus note, a bit earthy too, mild grassy notes, a mild sweet caramel malt note and toasty grainy reddish malt. Quite interested unique blend that is quite nice.

Taste starts with the malts, a caramel sweetness, some toasty grainy malts, some toasty reddish malts, and a little grassy note as well. A nice big spicy rye component again, not overly rye or spicy but definitely strong, with a little fruity note too. It also seems to bring a mild caramelized sugar almost roasty note, a really interesting unique character that was slightly in the aroma too, maybe a little creme brulee note like flavor. Then hops, spicy earthy hops, little floral and grassy too, hint of a fruity citrus note as well, mild rind and sticky citrus fruit like. Fairly bitter mostly, then turns even more bitter on the dry finish, but a little sticky, mild caramel note on the finish as well, more spicy rye, little toasty reddish malt, and more spicy earthy hops all lingering.

Mouth is med to a bit fuller bod, decent fluffy carb.

Overall pretty nice, a really interesting combination of flavors and aromas, nice big spicy and slight fruity rye, great spicy earthy hops, little fruity citrus note as well, and that really interesting caramel toffee notes. Quite enjoyable but not a pounding beer, def a long night sipper for a bomber. I also love that they actually give all the details of the recipe, which is pretty nice.

This new is an enigma. It looks and smells amazing but the taste ribs me the wrong way.

In the glass this is a beauty. Golden yellow with beautiful lacing. Similarly the aroma is amazing and first rate. Huge pine hops smell.

Unfortunately for me, the taste rubs me the wrong way. It is so dry and malt free. No sweet taste at all.I just don't like it. The aftertaste is the same, only worse.

So this is a mixed review but a warning to me. Don't buy it again, Bob.

Slightly hazed orangey apricot colored with an orangey beige head of thick and dimpled foam that lingers very long. Big hop aroma, resiny pine and orange rind, some toffee and cinnamon.

Big hoppy flavor with a mix of floral and pine, some orange rind. Good malt balance with notes of cinnamon and toffee.

Rich and full mouthfeel, creamy, filling and satisfying. Great beer.
