Smuttynose Rhye IPASmuttynose Rhye IPA

Brewed by:
Smuttynose Brewing Company
New Hampshire, United States

Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

Another winner from Smutty.
In a pint glass the beer was a brassy color with a thick white head. There was a lot of lace.

Aroma of citrus and piney hops, more on the citrus side. Spicy rye.

Taste agreed with the aroma. Big grapefruit, some pine. Great rye taste, with a kind of kick to it.

This beer was pleasantly hoppy, but balanced.

Very nice.

Pours into an impy nonic a dull hazed burnt orange infused medium golden with a terrific tightly formed one finger craterous white head that is not fading in the least bit, just great.Big grapefruit rind-like hops jump out at ya in the nose along with spicy rye,I like the fact that the rye plays a big role, lately some of the "hopped up rye" beers I have had leaves me wanting more rye.A fresh citric hop blasts greets the taste buds with the spicy rye coming in right afterwards making for a nice 1-2 punch,a firm lightly sweet bready base compliments the beer with the alcohol creeping a bit.Maybe the best Smuttynose beer I have had, this is what a big hoppy rye beer should be,fantastic.

22 ounce bottle, stamped with ABV 6.8%. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a hazy golden orange color with about an inch and a half off-white frothy head. Head retention is excellent, and there's a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like citrusy (orange, grapefruit) and pine hops, and spicy rye. I think it tastes like the aroma, but with a good balance between the rye and the hops. There's also a long lasting bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and has moderate carbonation. I liked this a lot, and it's priced well at $5.99 a bomber. I'd buy this again!

A: Pours a golden yellow color with 2+ fingers of head that lasts for a few minutes before settling down to a fairly thick cap that leaves some nice lacing

S: Nice and juicy with citrusy and lightly piney hops. Also get a hint of floral hops and a solid maltiness including the spiciness from the rye

T: Starts off with a wave of citrus along with some pine and earthiness. Goes into a light spiciness from the rye and some floral hops notes. Finishes with some breadiness and a lingering bitterness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A very solid rye IPA with a great balance between both the hops and malt as well as the amount of rye used. Easy to drink to go along with the great balance. Great value as always from the Smutty BBS, so definitely worth trying

A: The beer is slightly hazy amber-orange in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high beige colored head that gradually died down, leaving a patch of bubbles covering the surface, a thin collar and lacy webs of bubbles running down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of citrusy and spicy hops are present in the nose.
T: The rye take center stage in the taste of this beer, imparting lots of spicy flavors while the hops mostly are responsible for lending a moderate to strong amount of bitterness and only impart hints of citrus.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really enjoyed this rye beer because it was very bold and spicy yet remained drinkable. No traces of alcohol are noticeable in the taste.

A_Cloudy yellow orange with and off white head. Some lacing

S_Aroma of orange, sugar, a bit of spice

T_Unlike the smell fairly bitter up front. A nice citrus and pine hop follows this leading to the distinctive rye finish. Aftertaste is pretty dry and bitter

M_tight high carbonation hits first, followed by a minor stickiness. Fairly dry and astringent in the aftertaste

O_I like this more as it warms. A nice mash up of rye and IPA.

Bottle from Bert's.
Pours a slightly hazy light golden color with a huge off white head that persists forever. Aromas of spicy rye, onion, garlic, and pine with a very subtle and almost completely hidden light bready malt. The flavor is spicy and lightly tart with huge pine and onion flavors and just a hint of malty sweetness. Long lingering spicy and hop bitterness persists long after every sip. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. Really nice spicy hoppy brew!

Have been on a rye beer kick so was excited to see this new offering in the Smuttynose Big Beer Series. Purchased at American Provisions in Southie.

Poured from 22oz brown bomber into pint glass. Beautiful appearance. Deep orange color with golden edges. Half inch thick head which lasts throughout. Hazy. Tons of lacing. Very warm and inviting.

Aroma is pine, grapefruit, roasted, earthy. Taste varied as beer warmed a bit. Initially hop forward with long lingering rye on the back end. As it warmed, less hoppy, more malty, roasted, bready with hints of citrus. Alcohol also comes though. Thick but clean mouthfeel.

Excellent rye beer. Hope to find it on tap as well.
