Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Red Rock's Elephino (el-uh-fine-oh) Double India Pale Ale is an American style IPA. Its intense citrus, floral and perfume-like, resinous and piney aroma come from the use of a copious amount of American hops. This beer is double dry-hopped on whole leaf Amarillo hops for a vivid, fresh aroma. The huge hop profile is backed up by a malty sweetness that lends a hand in this fine creation's balance.

Acquired via trade from Wasatch so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains a lot of fruity citrus, grassy hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with strong sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. Then a strong but not over-powering hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and provides a good balance to the big sweetness. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is an excellent 2IPA worth drinking for a whole evening.

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 5.99. No bottling info noted. Served in a Sweetwater snifter.

Pours a hazy yellow orange with one finger white head. Leaves nice spots of lacing.

A nice sharp aroma of citrus hops hit my nose as soon as I popped off the cap. Sweet blend of pine, mango, orange and fresh cut grass.

Taste delivers that nice blend of citrus hops I smelled. Mango, pineapple, grass and orange. A good touch of biscuity malt. Very little, if any, booze bite. Long sweet but dry citrus aftertaste.

Medium in body and carbonation. Oily slick on the tongue (in a good way). It could stand to be a bit heavier but it's light enough to go down smooth.

Glad I picked this up and I'll definately get more in the future. In a market saturated with IPAs, doubles and imperials, Red Rocks had created a great hoppy treat that, for my tastes, can stand up to many of the big boys. Worth at least one try if your a fan of the style.

I really should swing by RedRock to get one that I know is fresh. This one is from a state store here in SLC. Poured into my IPA goblet.

Appearance: A rather hazy burnished golden color. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves a small amount of lacing.

Smell: There is a sweet maltiness behind all of the hops. For the hops I sense herbs, pine, and citrus and tropical fruits. Really nice.

Taste: Hoppy bitterness all through the taste. The maltiness is on the front end of the taste. This is a really intense beer and the maltiness stands up to the hoppiness. The taste of the hops mirrors that of the smell.

Mouthfeel: This is a smooth beer. The finish is fairly long with intense hop flavors. The carbonation is soft allowing the flavors to linger even longer than they otherwise would.

Drinkability: This a is a big hoppy beer in a 500 ml bottle with a fairly high ABV (8.0), so I probably would not drink more than one of these in a sitting. That being said, it is really good and one that I would seek out.

very citrusy and piney. not overly bitter or hoppy for a double IPA. crisp, sweet flavor. very drinkable, but more enjoyable in smaller sips. currently my favorite IPA.

my only complaint might be that $3.50 seems a bit pricey. granted it is a 500ml bottle. i might rather see a 12oz bottle for $2.50

My bottle was labelled RedRock Elephino Double IPA. Everything else was the same as the old label (and there is still a picture of an elephant). It was a very nice DIPA was grapefruit and pear characteristics. My first Utah beer was delicious!

A: Orange colour and a 1 cm head that fades pretty fast. 4

S: Citrus hops with a strong grapefruit-like character. There is also some pear aroma. Very interesting. 4.5

T: Malty with tangy grapefruit and some sweet pear. There is a slightly bitter aftertaste. I don't love the pear-like flavour. 4

M: Pretty thick. Not strongly carbonated. 4

O: 4

Purchased from my local bottle shop that just got it in, 500 ml bottle poured into Russian River Belgian-style Stemmed Glass

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a small off-white head that faded slowly and left a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contained a lot of fruity citrus, grassy hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste started out with a strong sweet flavor of citrus and caramel. Then a strong but not a over-powering hop bitterness comes in. The malt character is heavy but not too much so, also provided good balance to the sweetness. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Quite tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, excellent 2IPA.

Served at the Bayou Salt Lake City's biggest beer bar.

A: Amber lemon orange haze. Light white foam that clings the edge of the glass. There is a pasty copper glow when held to the sunlight.

S: Fragrant Chinook hops. Sweet amber honey combs. Light aromatic amber golden malts.

T: You can really taste 5 of the hop varietals with the first swallow. (this brew is made with 6) There are midwestern sticky hops plowing through. This brew is a cross between a Stone IPA and Founders Centenial IPA. A nice yellow lemon crisp. Orange rind grapefruit, sweet orange peel and Dominion Hop Mountain sticky pine cone resins.

M: THis is the best part. This is one very smooth highly drinkable Double IPA. It feels like its served with a nitro tap in a bottle! It's crisp with a lavender tongue feel!

O: This is one solid ass DIPA. Well worth the buy and try, it could be someone's favorite drinkable double IPA. Mine's Lagunitas Maximas btw, but thanks to JR and Mike for the recommendation when I was getting my meat and cheese on at Epic Brewery down the street. Keep truckin out of state for those highly sought after brews. Utah, your beer laws suck.
