Appearance: Clear amber/red with an inch of foam.

Smell: Mild roasted coffee.

Taste: Mildly brewed coffee taste throughout from start to finish. Some lightly roasted malts and grain, with just a hint of caramel as well.

Mouthfeel: Watery with a medium-light body and decent carbonation.

Drinkability: High. Iced coffee. Refreshing. Perfect for lunch. It goes down easy.

A: Nice deep copper in color. Brilliant clarity. Pours with not much head. A small ring of tiny white bubbles leave a nice ring around the edges of the glass.

S: Coffee's the first thing you'll notice and while prominent, it's still pretty subtle. I find myself searching for the roasty, chocolate notes you usually in the stouts that most often make the base for coffee beers. Medium malt sweetness, no noticeable hop aroma. No esters. A very clean aroma.

T: Strong coffee flavor. Refreshingly smooth, no trace of roastiness. Malt sweetness comes mid-palate to remind you that this isn't a cup of iced java. Despite the lack of hop flavor, this finishes far toward the bitter side...

M: Mouthfeel is a bit higher for this style than normal but it pairs with the flavor quite well. Carbonation is low. Low creaminess. Bitterness stays with you, leaving the corners of your mouth tingling.

D: Very well constructed beer. The coffee flavor ends up canceling out any of the subtlety of the base beer so that's a bit of a bummer. Quite appealing otherwise.

Roasted coffee dominates the aroma, along with malt.

Nice full malty flavor. Medium bodied. The coffee has an herbal effect here, offsetting the sweet malt. A drinkable session beer. The aftertaste is a weird --- but not bad --- combo of coffee and earthy hops. The only minor negative is that the light sweetness of the beer doesn't blend as well with the coffee as much as a smaller-bodied or darker beer might. For example, I would have chose a brown coffee ale rather than an amber pseudo-lager (Steam beer/California Common-style).

I got this bottle in a trade with joe1510. Thanks Joe!

This pours a deep reddish amber with a 1 finger head of foam.

The smell is very light. Iget some notes of earthy malt & caramel malt with a light dash of roasted coffee.

The taste is more assertive. Lots of roasted coffee(grounds) with a light caramel malt sweetness but the overall effect for me is coffee bitterness.

Medium bordering on full mouthfeel here, very silky, carbonation is light, and it finishes mostly with coffee but there's some earthy tones there as well. Head retention is great and there's a ring of lacing after every sip. Nice!

Bottom line: A tasty brew with the word coffee on the label..and by golly, the coffee tastes very nice indeed. A keeper.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a brownish color that becomes red with backlighting. Very thin white head quickly dissipates.
S: Definite strong coffee aroma. Nice.
T: Dark coffee ground notes dominate (tastes like the strong stuff you get at the bottom of the pot when some coffee grounds filter through). Perhaps a little cream in the background.
M: Smooth and creamy. Not bitter at all as I was expecting.
D: Very drinkable. An excellent coffee lager...not a stout. If there is a criticism to this brew it is that it's one-dimensional...coffee. If you enjoy coffee, you will enjoy this beer...very true coffee flavor. I am enjoying the experimentation at Furthermore.

Although this is very robust, very good-tasting beer, I actually didn't feel like it totally delivered on the promise of its name ("Oscura") or the "coffee" claim, at least to the degree that I was expecting.

In contrast to the other reviews I see here, I didn't think this beer carried much more of a coffee note than many smokey porters I've had. The drink itself is a rich brown, but not nearly as dark or opaque as I was thinking it would be. Smokey does sum up the taste quite well. Like black licorice left in a smokehouse, going down just a little bitter with a loooong finish.

I liked it quite a bit but - though I'm not sure the "herbed/spiced beer" category is necessarily what the Oscura folks were going for, whatever it was, it just seemed to me that they missed it a bit.

Acquired from SamuelJackson45 via LOKO 4 Locals BIF so a big THANK YOU goes out to him!
Poured in to a pint glass

A: This beer pours a ruddy reddish, orange brown with a one finger of khaki colored head. Head recedes at a moderate pace and leaves wispy lacing along the glass.

S: Nose is coffee, milk chocolate, and minor sweet caramel notes. Wow - coffee for this style.. unexpected but a really pleasant nose on this!

T: Taste starts with milk chocolate and nice light coffee notes, sweet toffee comes through a touch and a light bready, hint of grain. Coffee comes back in and makes a strong presence in the finish. The finish has a very sweet toffee malt that hangs on the palate.

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, crisp at first, a bit oily in the middle, and the finish is slightly dry.

O: Goes down very easy, very tasty, not too filling, mild kick, not a good representation of the style but a DAMN fine beer! I really like this beer but is definitely doesn't fit it's style. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat though.

Pours a clean brown color with a very small off white head.

Scent of strong coffee, faint chocolate and dry bready malts. A bit potent, but solid nonetheless.

Taste of bitter coffee, some chocolate, lightly roasted malts and a hint of citrus. A tasty beer with a nice coffee flavor.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a nice bite of carbonation.

Pours murky brown. Oddest color on a coffee beer I've seen. Nose is a lot of coffee. A lot. Vibrant espresso grinds kinda fragrance. Flavor carries the same, but it's a real big punch in the mouth. And the lingering aftertaste is so intense and coffee-forward. Intense. Not much going on here besides coffee. Feel is fine. So is drinkability. This is a coffee beer. Plain and simple.

Thanks to tenderbranson69 for sharing this beer, poured chilled into my DFH signature glass.

A - A lightly hazed dark crimson, very good clarity considering the coffee and 2 fingers of light cream -again nice considering the oils of the beans. Streams of lace collect and hold well.

S - The beer is redolent of cold brewed coffee which is pleasant w/ a malty caramel note and light chalky nose

M - A mild malt texture w/ moderate effervescent feel. A nice spice note is felt w/ slightly creamy feel and mild sweet finish

T - The taste is mild w/ coffee at first w/ more nutty coffee mixed w/ an earthy toast taste and light hop flavor. There is a subtle fruit element similar to apple w/ a yeast taste in the finish

D - This is a fine Cali Common. I once brewed a Steam beer based on an Anchor clone recipe w/ cold brewed Panamanian coffee, but this is more seemless in flavor, which is good. The base beer isn't overwhelmend by the beans-well done!

This is an interesting hybrid ale/lager ice brewed coffee California Common style Mexican brown lager. I don't know what Oscura but the word obscure comes to mind while describing this beer. I read about it on the website was intrigued so here's the beer does it work out?

Appears a dee amber/brown completely see through, light tan khaki hued head, fors a thin head that leaves behind speckled scattered lacing.

Aroma is faint with a nutty coffee edge, creamy vanilla sweetness as well. An air of herbal hops slips in with the coffee, let's check out the first sip.

This tastes like a complex ice brewed coffee, which I've only had a handful of times. There's earthy, nut driven coffee notes. A touch of brown sugar/caramel with bitter coffee roasts/herbal hops this is a nice tsting session beer, especially if you like coffee. It's not a slap you around coffee brew but it's flavorful and refreshing within this context.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied carbonation is soft, almost as a silky creamy glide to it across my palate.

Drinkability is sessionable I'd like grab their sampler case, I really really liked the Knot Stock as well interesting brews Aran Madden used to brew here in the Burgh with the Foundry and Church Brew Works, I'm glad he found a happy new home to brew at.

12 oz bottle, no bottled on date present. Poured into a LunaR brewing pint glass.

A - Pours one finger of head that disappears quickly. A golden orange / brown colored body. No lacing.

S - Smell is of beautiful fresh roasted grinded coffee beans.

T - Taste reminds me of what I would imagine a coffee infused IPA would taste like but I am probably wrong. Again, a wondrous freshly grinded coffee bean characteristic to it along with a hint of hops. This beer has more beautiful coffee elements to it than the most prestigious coffee stouts I've ever tried.

M - Feel is bitter sticky and dry.

Overall a decent interesting unique beer. Never had anything from this brewery and never heard of the style "California common / steam beer" either. Definitely something I will be looking into again though. An intriguing beer, to say the least.

Furthermore Oscura ---4/5.

Appearance is good, a nice brown color with a decent amount of head and lacing. Smell and taste are pretty similar. Lots of coffee flavored malt, some spice, and a bit of yeastiness. Mouthfeel is good, nice medium body and a good amount of carbonation. Drinkability is also good.

A - Wow this is the lightest coffee beer ever! Pours a deep amber color with... oh no sediment floating around. Being only 6 months old it still must be good. Mild foam that turns to a sticky lace ring.

S - Roasty malty coffee is mild with slight grain.

T - Ow wow that's different! Taste is of mild roasted grains with a herbal tone almost tea. Mild caramel sweetness and finishes only slightly bitter.

M - Light to medium body.

D - Well Damn I got an old beer. Still for $1.75 it drinks pretty good but I will have to track down a fresh one for comparison. Decent coffee beer!
