Bottle I brought to share at Retsinis' tasting.

Bottled 1/8/14.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of smoked malt, campfire, and Band-Aid aromas. Taste is much the same with campfire and Band-Aid flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of smoke bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid smoke characteristics, but the Band-Aid I am getting is a bit too much in my opinion.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off whit head that died down but consistenty left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of smoked malts are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of iodine from the smoked malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer might not be for everyone's palate, but if you can handle the iodine-like flavors it is pretty good and would pair well with smoked meats.

With the thoughts of Bamburg close at hand, their famed smoked beers make their way to far-reaching Utah where the flavors of mesquite and smoke are paramount- this is a smoked beer brewed in smokey heaven.

Darker than lager, but paler than "pale" its light amber-gold hue is hazy with smoky bits as the aromas of honey baked hams, campfire and a hickory smoke charms the nose. Its caramel and toasted-sweet taste is mildly citrusy even though those smoky tones are paramount on the early palate.

What ensues is a deepening smoky sweetness that gains intensity as as those smoke phenols penetrate deep into the taste buds. But as the sweetness loosens its grip, the smoke drifts to hover above the palate to allow a lager-like drinkability to oddly refresh the palate despite its savory periphery.

Its finish is smoky-dry but not ashy or acrid. Supported well with malt structure and background sweetness, a piney hop bitterness smolders beneath and seems to peak through as if it were a pale ale. Mild spiciness adds a pep to the arid smoke flavors that return in waves after wave in aftertaste.

huge fluffy fizzy head takes up half the pour, tons of streaming bubbles, slow fading head, lots if lacing, mostly clear golden orange color.

Nose nice smoked meat, smoked malts, mild campfire big smoke aroma but not beat you with it, little sweet malt base, mild crisp lager like and fruity note.

Taste fair sweetness, candy like, with big smoke again, smoked cheese, little campfire mild smoldering log, smooth creamy, mild lager feel, soft, mild earthy grassy spicy hop in the background, with fair bitterness, little sticky finish but dry and mild crisp, long mild Smokey finish little bitter hop.

Mouth is med bod, mild creamy, decent but lighter carb.

On-tap 4/13/2014 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains mostly smoked malts along with touches of fruit and hops.

T: The taste likewise starts out with a strong smokiness. Then some caramel and fruit sweetness comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The smokiness fades a bit as you continue to drink the beer. The after-taste is slightly smoky and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Bottled on 1/08/14.Pours into a half liter stein a brilliant clear copper with a large blooming white rockycrown that takes forever to settle into a frothy mass.Meaty smokiness in the nose with mild caramel and brown sugar sweetness underneath all the smoke.A smooth creamy mouthfeel makes for easy drinking.Smoke obviously is the main flavor compoent but it isn't in your face, mild sweet dough, pepper, and iron are also thrown into the mix,a bit of toast is more prevalent as I drink more.Pretty easy going down for the size and the feel is great,a solid smoked lager here.

Hazed dark amber in the wine glass with a decent head. Pleasantly spritzy in the mouth. Huge smokehouse, smoked meat aroma. Medium body with an oily texture.

This really does taste exactly like bacon. Sweet and apple, malty, and relentlessly smoky. I tried it with food and without, and didn't like it much either way. It's a nice smoke flavor, it's just so non-beery and over the top. A slight bitterness emerges in the aftertaste.

I guess this is drinkable, after splitting the bottle, but it's more of a fascination with how weird this stuff is. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the state liquor store in Salt Lake City.

This was poured into a mug with a light hazy bronzed semi-burnt orange to ruddy brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head. Thick foamy lacing roams around the glass after the head dissipated. The smell starts off with a rich sweet to moderately smoked malts. Light meatiness enters in after a bit of warming. The taste was mainly sweet with an ample amount of smoked malt portion. Meatiness is extremely subdued. But a light crisp breadiness does show some extra flavor and ends up leading slightly into the aftertaste and on into a quick sweet moderately smokey finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light. Smooth sweet to smokiness runs along my tongue nicely. Overall, I liked this one for me, and it seemed fairly close to the true "rauchbier" style.
