Notes: Juniper and piney hops build the framework for this bold dark ale. With its assertive bitterness and sweet malt finish, this beer stands tall above the rest.

Malty and notable roasted coffee taste. Some pine-hops on the nose. Pretty good, but not splendid.

not the first great hoppy dark one these guys have made, but another good one, nice to see something new from unita, i feel like its been a long while since i have had the pleasure. this has some juniper in it, a nice woodsy northwestern hop complexion, and is darker than brown but not quite black in the glass under a frothy and lasting khaki head. looks more active in the glass than see styles normally do. the nose is robust here, some fresh cut pine, very festive, and a light gin note from the juniper, highly botanical and fresh and green, a neat juxtaposition to the darker, heavier malts. some light smoke, dark chocolate, and burnt coffee character to the grain, a hint of brown sugar sweetness in the middle too, but lots of hops, approaching the ipa level and there is some definite bitterness most of the way through it. i like the freshness of the hops, super wintery complexion, and i like the bitterness pushing through the heavier malt base. dry cocoa and just a touch of sweet at the end, nice carbonation, this drinks sturdy but not so much so that i wouldnt want two or three or four of them. nice beer for this time of year, cool marriage of the juniper and the hops!

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark red / brown, almost opaque, thin brown head. Aroma is malt, pine, juniper, a hint of alcohol. Taste is sweet malt, pine, caramel, chocolate. The pine is just right, not overwhelming. An excellent black IPA, one of Uinta’s better offerings.

Pours a dark, coffee color with a good amount of head that lingers
Smell: molasses, coffee, hints of bitersweet chocolate, malt and juniper. Fragrance is medium intensity and not overbearing.
Taste: Bright, bitter, coffee flavor with a sticky molasses at the same time. Reminiscent of a coffee stout but with an IPA kick. On the palate, the pine is first, then followed by the coffee and molasses, and a bitterness lingers on the palate for a while and seems to get more bitter as the moments wear on (but in a good way). Flavors get more complex as it warms up... almost mossy/peat character... perhaps it's the juniper coming out.
Feel: Good carbonation.. pretty smooth.

Overall, I admit, I picked up this beer because of the name. I thought the name was cute and Unita beers tend to be pretty good, so why not? It's different than other beers I've tried before... kind of like a hybrid of a coffee stout and a very bitter IPA. Overall, the beer is pleasant. It's probably one that I would try again if someone had it at a party, but wouldn't go out look for or buy it again. That being said, it's definitely worth a try. This beer is tasty and unique, just not my cup of tea, I mean, "beer".

Can poured into a Founders Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours dark brown, nearly black, with a frothy khaki head that settles to a light layer and leaves some thin lacing.

S: Roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, a hint of smoke, spicy resinous pine, light citrus and fruity notes, and toffee sweetness.

T: Nice and piney, a little juniper, roasted malt, black coffee, bittersweet chocolate, burnt toast, earthy, a touch of citrus, tangerine and grapefruit, a hint of passion fruit, and some toffee sweetness.

M: A bit on the Fuller side of medium body, somewhat lively carbonation, yet also slightly creamy.

O: I'm a sucker for a good black IPA, so I'm really enjoying this one.

Looked like a stout with the color and body but tastes light and crisp which was a pleasant surprise!

Pours out black with a two finger brown head. Head retention is superb and leaves rings of sticky lacing.

Smells like Christmas. Smells very piney with a firm malt sweetness balancing it out. Getting hints of chocolate as well and if I'm not mistaken I am in fact picking up faint juniper.

Lightly roasted sweet malts out the gate with a strong pine bitterness quickly making an appearance. Its lingers on with a molasses sweetness to the end. No juniper this time around. I'm guessing they added them in for the aroma more so.

The mouthfeel full bodied and silky smooth. Carbonation is light leaning towards for of an effervescent feel adding a lightness.

Deep dark brown pour, y’all creamy tan head that sticks around, like the lacing.
Smells sweet up front with lots of molasses, with earth/ lumber and a hint of chocolate.
Taste is some nice pine-like hops, and a bitterness that shares the malts/ molasses in a terrific balance. This really does shine in the malt department. The beer’s malts are sweet without being overly so, and still have the flavor you might find in a high quality, solidly malt-backboned DIPA, like DFH 90-min. (for example)...a tea-like, robust malt flavor. After some sipping some hints of vanilla even surface. Make no mistake, this IS dark.
Uinta nails what it sets out to do here.
Feels creamy and full with low carbonation. Very smooth. Even took some camping to a cabin in the pines. Had it before noon, and was just like its name suggested.

Almost black color with a thick two finger caramel head with great retention and leaving laces.
Aroma with notes of creamy coffee, pine, hay and tangerines.
Flavor with notes of juniper, roasted coffee beans, cola, cream, melon, tangerines, grapes, pine, cocoa, white pepper, gooseberry, lychees and stone fruit. Dry and bitter aftertaste. It feels lower than its 73 IBUs.
Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 7.5% is completely absent.
Superbly balanced and citrusy-piney Black IPA. Great complexity.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 4/24/2018. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finer fairly dense and rocky khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate dark/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/herbal/grassy/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/floral/grassy/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and zero acrid/astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly chalky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an awesome black IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate dark/roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/charred/drying finish, never overly aggressive. Great mix of juicy and dark/earthy hop complexity; nice balancing dark/roast/bready malt presence, but still feels like an IPA. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Pours a black color. 3/4 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight piney hops, slight roasted malt, slight wood, slight spicy hops, and slight spruce. Fits the style of an American Black Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. There is an elevated hop bitterness. Tastes of sweet malt, alcohol, slight roasted malt, hint of wood, slight spicy hops, slight piney hops, hint of coffee, and a hint of earthiness. Overall, good appearance, aroma, feel, body, and blend.
