A dark, challenging beer that manages to remain dry while pushing the limits of dark malt, hops and juniper. The juniper is restrained but comes through more and more as the beer warms. Nice bacony notes and plenty of roasty malt. Overall a fantastic example of the form and perhaps Uinta’s finest effort. And it’s in a can so you can drink it in the dark, deadly woods where it belongs. Cheers!

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with an off white thick foamy head that dissipates at a decent pace. Thick foamy clingy lacing spreads all around the glass. The aroma takes on the sweet juniper berries but extracts the bitterness nicely out of those berries. Spruce is there showing some balancing sweet to bitter hoppiness. Good use of chocolate malts. Some coffee beans. The flavor balances very nicely between the bitterness and the sweet of the juniper, the spruce and the coffee beans. Chocolate malts slide a bit further back. Dark fruity berry (slightly acidic). And then there’s the dark fruity aftertaste with a quick semi-slick sort of sweet to bitter finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sipping quality about it. Mild carbonation hits nicely. Overall, nice American Black Ale that I could see coming back to. A little bit of a dark acidic fruitiness I can dig for it’s creativity.

12 oz. Can offering.

Black, almost totally opaque except if you hold it up to direct sunlight, ruby red hues appear around the edges. O.k....fine, it's dark. Frothy mocha foam head sticks around long with major lacing.

Smokey chocolate malt in the nose, sweet piney hops all over the face!

A very full and smooth mouthfeel is noticed first, which ends with a dry, earthy hop bite and decent bitterness. Smokey, chocolate and leafy bitter hops hit the palate hard, sweet dark fruit currents ride in next. Bitter piney hops with a fruity background even out the bitter dark chocolate and smokey malt very well. All and all, very complex and crazy easy to drink for a rather bold dark, super hoppy brew.

The juniper is too subtle for me to say for sure, but there is an extra bitter-fruity kick and long earthy finish that I cannot nail down. I believe it's the combo of the juniper and big piney hop addition. Definitley adds depth and complexity to an already deep brew. Fresh and wild taste!

Much thinner and lighter than I imagined, given the description of this brew. Still, well put together and enjoyable. Love getting a growler fill from a brewery some 2000 miles away

The Rise and Pine is a neat beer....great hoppy dark. It poured an opaque dark with thick tan head that is leaving a ring lace. The scent is piney and slight roast. The taste is nicely balanced between roast malt. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall the beer is solid and definitely worth a try.

L: Black, crowned with a creamy tan head that subsides after a few minutes, always leaving a thin film and ring. Splotches of lacing are left behind.

S: Tons of pine, like spruce tips, the juniper contributing to that. Deep roasted malts, dark chocolate, bitter cacao, and black coffee. Burnt toast. Hints of grapefruit. Some bitter blueberry from the juniper as well.

T: A perfect balance between roasted malt and pine. Bitter dark chocolate, espresso, and cocoa powder clash with tons of pine and juniper. Hints of smoke, oak, and blackberry, as well as some bitter grapefruit peel. Hints of blueberry as well from the juniper. Finishes with moderate bitterness, flavors of pine, spice, juniper, and grapefruit residing for a while. Lightly dry as well.

F: Medium-bodied, smooth, well-rounded, good smooth carbonation. Finishes lightly dry. Very drinkable.

O: A really great black IPA. One of the best I've had. Great beer!

Pitch black with large head, slightly brown against the light
Smell is floral and piney, quite appetizing
Taste: Dense hop character with a sweet toasty malt character, covers up the alcohol well but it's something to get used to
Overall a solid seasonal from Uintah, something I could learn to love

WOW! this beer intrigued me on the shelf. I like hops, dark ale and juniper. I was not disappointed. Look is amazing with huge fluffy and impressive head. Great nose of pine and juniper as described with a hint of roast. The tatse and mouth feel are great. Big roast up from with resinous pine bite, a dryness from both hops and roasted malt that is balanced by light sweetness of the malt. Dark chocolate and espresso. the juniper is not over the top but partners so well with the hops. The alchohol is present but masked with body of beer and hops well.

I really am enjoying this one.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of pine, some light malts in the background. Taste is piney, juniper, roasted malts are present but subdued. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, although the flavors aren't completely meshing together.
