Juniper and piney hops build the framework for this bold dark ale. With its assertive bitterness and sweet malt finish, this beer stands tall above the rest.

Malty and notable roasted coffee taste. Some pine-hops on the nose. Pretty good, but not splendid.

not the first great hoppy dark one these guys have made, but another good one, nice to see something new from unita, i feel like its been a long while since i have had the pleasure. this has some juniper in it, a nice woodsy northwestern hop complexion, and is darker than brown but not quite black in the glass under a frothy and lasting khaki head. looks more active in the glass than see styles normally do. the nose is robust here, some fresh cut pine, very festive, and a light gin note from the juniper, highly botanical and fresh and green, a neat juxtaposition to the darker, heavier malts. some light smoke, dark chocolate, and burnt coffee character to the grain, a hint of brown sugar sweetness in the middle too, but lots of hops, approaching the ipa level and there is some definite bitterness most of the way through it. i like the freshness of the hops, super wintery complexion, and i like the bitterness pushing through the heavier malt base. dry cocoa and just a touch of sweet at the end, nice carbonation, this drinks sturdy but not so much so that i wouldnt want two or three or four of them. nice beer for this time of year, cool marriage of the juniper and the hops!

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark red / brown, almost opaque, thin brown head. Aroma is malt, pine, juniper, a hint of alcohol. Taste is sweet malt, pine, caramel, chocolate. The pine is just right, not overwhelming. An excellent black IPA, one of Uinta’s better offerings.

Pours a dark, coffee color with a good amount of head that lingers
Smell: molasses, coffee, hints of bitersweet chocolate, malt and juniper. Fragrance is medium intensity and not overbearing.
Taste: Bright, bitter, coffee flavor with a sticky molasses at the same time. Reminiscent of a coffee stout but with an IPA kick. On the palate, the pine is first, then followed by the coffee and molasses, and a bitterness lingers on the palate for a while and seems to get more bitter as the moments wear on (but in a good way). Flavors get more complex as it warms up... almost mossy/peat character... perhaps it's the juniper coming out.
Feel: Good carbonation.. pretty smooth.

Overall, I admit, I picked up this beer because of the name. I thought the name was cute and Unita beers tend to be pretty good, so why not? It's different than other beers I've tried before... kind of like a hybrid of a coffee stout and a very bitter IPA. Overall, the beer is pleasant. It's probably one that I would try again if someone had it at a party, but wouldn't go out look for or buy it again. That being said, it's definitely worth a try. This beer is tasty and unique, just not my cup of tea, I mean, "beer".

Can poured into a Founders Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours dark brown, nearly black, with a frothy khaki head that settles to a light layer and leaves some thin lacing.

S: Roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, a hint of smoke, spicy resinous pine, light citrus and fruity notes, and toffee sweetness.

T: Nice and piney, a little juniper, roasted malt, black coffee, bittersweet chocolate, burnt toast, earthy, a touch of citrus, tangerine and grapefruit, a hint of passion fruit, and some toffee sweetness.

M: A bit on the Fuller side of medium body, somewhat lively carbonation, yet also slightly creamy.

O: I'm a sucker for a good black IPA, so I'm really enjoying this one.
