Detour Double India Pale AleDetour Double India Pale Ale
Notes: Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

Pours orange with bright clarity. A fat creamy head of light colored khaki foam that clings to the glass and leaves lots of lace. Nose is bright with orange and a pine. A bit of sugar to draw you in. A faint touch of earthy herbal that comes forward shyly as this warms. Candied orange peel. Taste is terrific. That orange is the bright and sweet. The hops give out a slight oniony flavor but I am very sensitive to that. Smooth and supple mouthfeel. This one glides across the palate. The bitterness peaks at the back end and the earthy herbal qualities resound for a time in the dry finish. The malt in this one comes forward almost slyly to reveal a light dry biscuit, tempting brown sugar and a light caramel. Pine stays light on the palate and a bit of grapefruit tartness shows up late int he drink. This has a graceful and medium mouthfeel.

Deep amber gold color with white cap.

Fairly strong scent of sharp, piney hops. There's rich malt in the background but hops dominate.

Taste on entry is hop forward with malt trailing behind. The hops shine with sharp brilliance yet remain somehow restrained. At 97 IBU they could be stomping in like a herd of elephants but they don't, rather a solid but slowly cadenced march. Malt really can't compete with hops on this level yet they stand with a united front that shows they have stuff of their own. The 9.5 % doesn't present a trace of alcohol flavor which helps make this beer easily drinkable.

Full texture with a mouth filling profile. Not alot in the way of carbonation but it doesn't really need any.

Years ago one of my favorite restaurants featured a desert named 'Death by Chocolate' which was not much bigger than a large biscuit yet contained 2000 calories. That's what I was reminded of when first tasting this brew because it packs so much into this 12 oz can. These are not complex flavors but they are deep and heavy resulting in a strong brew with an easy drinking quality.

Pours a copper color with a solid head, the smell is brilliantly hoppy with alcohol also highly detectable but in a good way.
The taste is overwhelming and hoppy, this is the type of beer that haunts the dreams of non hopheads, extreme hoppy taste with ample but comparatively mild malt and lots of alcohol. This is one of my favorites

I'm not sure why this brew doesn't have a higher rating in Beer Advocate. Maybe because it is a more traditional style Double IPA, instead of just another grapefruit infused, citrus driven hop first beer. So, I thought I would weigh in on this for the sake of anyone else out there who likes a good, malty, bitter style of double IPA. Not grapefruit juice!

A crisp, clear copper body with a robust head. Excellent lacing on the glass.

Sweet and malty aroma. A bit light bread. Spicy hops, but not overpowering. Somewhat earthy.

Caramel and biscuit character in the malt flavor. Finishes with a strong bitterness with alcohol warmth making a noticeable appearance at the end.

Good body, light-to-medium in body. Smooth yet bright.

All in all, a great IPA. It's somewhat lacking in dynamics for a DIPA except for its ABV and noticeable alcohol warmth in the taste. I would have expected a stronger hop aroma presence for the style. Still, a pretty damn good IPA, all else considered...

Pours hazy copper color with a tight white head that leaves plenty of lacing.

Smells of bright citrus and tropical fruits.

Tastes of sweet caramel malts layered with hops. Malt is pretty big and offers a good amount of honey sweetness. Hops are definitely present with tropical fruit notes and grapefruit, but I would like more bitterness. Alcohol comes through to leave some warming.

Mouthfeel is full with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Enjoyed in a pint glass

A: pours a nice clear amber color with two fingers of frothy gently off white head that lingers nicely, leaves a small amount of spotty lacing on the glass
S: nice hop notes, has a deep malt not and slight smokey caramel notes
T: really nice taste but definitely finishes with a slight alcohol bite, nice hop notes in the forefront with a malty note at the end, leaves a lingering taste of smoky malts on the palate
M: gentle carbonation tingle, smooth and slightly. Viscous, leaves the mouth feeling distinctly dry
O: a nice tasting double ipa with nice notes definitely has an alcohol bite as well it should at 9.5%

12 oz can. Pours hazy amber with two finger head with great retention, soapy lace. Piney aroma, caramel malt. Bitter piney IPA with solid malt backbone. Super dry graoefruit peel n pine finish. Not a bad DIPA, but way bitter with not much other character.

Pours a dark, burnished copper color with some good tightly bubbled ecru head. A little bit of bubblegum on the nose, along with some piney hops. Very boozy and syrupy sweet; kind of remind me a little bit of DogFish Head 120 Minute. This is my second from the new Crooked Line Series, and although neither has been bad, I have yet to be wowed.
