Very Good
Detour Double India Pale AleDetour Double India Pale Ale
Notes: Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

750ml bottle $9.49. Nice orange color with a smell that is hoppy and yet somehow manages to disappoint. The taste follows the same tact, hoppy and its clear they used plenty of hops but the profile just doesn't do it for me. Its got a bit of citrus and its bitter but when I want a dipa I really expect something with an exceptional hop profile like Pliny or Sculpin. I would not purchase this again given the price point.

From 6/5/10 notes. Had at SAVOR in DC.

a - Pours a transparent orange color with no head.

s - Smells of citrus hops, floral hops, and pine hops.

t - Tastes of citrus hops, floral hops, and a little bit of caramel malts. Very bitter up front and than the malts kick in.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A decent DIPA, but I thought maybe it was overhopped and too bitter. Would try again.

Large four-finger plus head, slowly settles leaving chunky lace along the way. Orange-amber color. Clear.

Generous grapefruit hop nose--very appealing. Notable alcohol smell. No real malt aroma.

The taste is as the smell: lots of grapefruit flavored hop bitterness and the swallow is very warming from the alcohol. Again, the malt disappears. Long aftertaste of peppery bitterness.

This is a big beer from the hop/alcohol perspective. Not complex enough to play with the top offerings in this category.

Beer is orange and clear with a big head of small and medium bubbles. Head leaves a lot of lacing on the glass and carbonation is moderate to low. Off to a good start.

The aroma is sweet first and hoppy second. Overall pretty weak in the nose.

Beer is super syrupy sweet and the bitterness is late and weak or overshadowed by the sweet. Pretty earthy / sulfury in the midpalate of this beer. Not very good.

25.4 fl oz brown bottle; caged & corked. Poured in an oversized wine glass.

Bottled on 03.30.2010.

Deep copper with a considerable amount of clarity. Frothy, pillowy white head that pastes the rim of the wine glass with a thick layer of lace.

Bright citrus and tropical fruit aromas: pear, pineapple, peach, and honeydew that seems to be bathed in rum. The base aroma is an oddly dark, toasted malt with a hint of diacetyl.

Semi-sweet, matured tropical fruit with lingering notes of honey. The alcohol character is complex, mingling between the tropical fruit, intense pine, and sharp bitterness. The hop profile is intense creating a slick, yet fresh finish. Some alcohol heat along with a mouthful of piney hops in the aftertaste.

Practically full bodied; thick, almost creamy, yet the alcohol character and hop intensity adds a slickness.

A big, flavorful Double IPA. A very nice introduction to Uinta. Can't wait to try more of their offerings.

750ml Bottle
Bottled On: 03/28/10
$6.95 ea.

Pours a very nice clean/clear golden amber/copper color, nice carbonation, very nice two-finger creamy off-white head, with tons of nice thick sticky lacing left behind. The nose is hoppy, with some nice malt notes, slightly fruity, nice little citrus note, and some pine notes. The taste is sweet, bitter, hoppy, with some malts thrown in, nice little citrus hint, and some pineyness. Medium body, with a nice slightly dry/bitter finish. Very Drinkable, Uinta did a pretty good job with this one, cool looking lable. Glad to finally get my hands on some.

750ml bottle, bottled on 3/30/10. Pours a clear light amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is floral and soapy, fruity (melon), piney hops with a little stinkiness (summit?). It's pretty subdued though.

The flavor is sweet malts with some melon and soapiness. It has a pretty big grassy bitterness with some pepper and stinkiness. There's a huge amount of harsh bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lower carbonation and almost watery.

Overall, I just couldn't get into it. A little reminiscent of Gubna (summit hops?), but not as well done. The soapiness was a little weird too. And it wasn't really well balanced with the abrasive bitterness in the finish.
