Appearance: Pours out a coffee brown color topped by three fingers of a relatively pale tan head; a few strands of lace appear as the head descends

Smell: Burnt chocolate, pinesap and hemp

Taste: Big clash of flavors right off the bat, with the burnt and ashy chocolate clashing with the piney hops; the hemp appears at mid-palate, but the yin and yang of this beer fight each other long after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I have had this beer a number of times and I struggle with it each time; while it has its merits, the flavors just don't blend together very well so I find the beer quite unbalanced

It's pronounced "doo-bee". Don't ask me how to pronounce Uinta. Love this beer though. Bought it in a 4 pack for $10 (perfect!), this is a fantastic, boozy black IPA. The hop aroma is overpowered by the alcohol fumes, but you won't mind once it starts to warm your belly! The bitter chocolate of the malt and grapefruit of the hops are the most prominent flavors.

12oz bottle poured into a mini snifter.

A: Midnight black with no light penetration, insanely sticky brownish white head leaving rings of malty goodness behind after each sip.

S: Burnt melons, bitter chocolate, freshly squeezed grapefruit, tropical grassy notes. Very earthy.

T: Burnt chocolate melds into a mellow tropical bitterness. Notes of bitter black coffee blend seamlessly with a prominent grassy hoppiness. Very well balanced between maltiness and hoppiness.

M: Medium bodied with a slightly spritzy mouthfeel. Very impressively long tingly hoppy and malty aftertaste. Taste lingers for an impressively long time after swallowing. Makes you want to slow down and enjoy. There's no way this tastes like it's 9.2%; it's so smooth and easy to drink.

O: This is an absolutely fantastic example of a cascadian dark ale. The mouthfeel is phenomenal and each sip is an absolute pleasure. I personally can't tell if the hemp seeds are adding to the earthiness of the flavor, but regardless, it's nice to see some experimenting with hemp seeds. Highly recommended for those who are fans of dark and hoppy ales.

Poured from a bottle dated "best by" 2/23/14, into a tulip.
Appearance - black, though a touch of light comes in if you look for it;very thick, foamy tan head; a wealth of lacing!
Smell - citrus and piney hops; dark, chocolate malts. Nose is balanced nicely!
Taste - balanced hops and chocolate malts; the 9.2% ABV is surprisingly well hidden!
Feel - a little heavier than some other black IPA's, but I like it! Hop bitterness on the finish!
Overall - very good high ABV black IPA; a bit heavy, somewhat syrupy, but well done. I'll come back to this on a cold day!

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Sierra Nevada IPA glass

a: Black except when viewed through to light, then a clear deep ruby. A two inch tan head slowly receded to very heavy surface foam and patterned lacing.

s: Pretty strong citrus/pine.

t: Powerful hop bite over dark caramel/espresso flavors. Bitterness lingers at the sides of the tongue. Later a dark roasted porter flavor comes out under the hops. An unusual and complex brew perhaps thanks to the hemp seed used to brew it (and no doubt the source of the name). Savorably sippable. Dark espresso-like aftertaste lingers.

m: Very good body.

o: Wow! This beer means business! Makes a great nightcap. Hops tend to dominate, but not to the detriment of the flavors and aromas.

UPDATE 8/15: Bought a fourpack and although it was still very good, not the mindblower it was prior to a more mature and experienced palate. Lowering my scores somewhat. Look from 5-4.25, smell to 4.0, taste and overall from 4.5-4.25

Poured this from a bottle into a snifter. It was black with a tan head and tons of lacing. The nose was awesome- lots of hops and very malty. I loved the taste- very nice imperial IPA with loads of hops and a malty backbone. I was (pleasantly) surprised that a rauch taste didn't present itself. The mouthfeel was great- nice n thick with good carbonation. Not sure how a an Imperial Black IPA should be scored in terms of overall score, since it was my first, so I gave it a 4.5. Would I have it again? HELL YES!
