This pours dark, oily brown, not much light passing through. Foams up a huge three finger high latte tan head that is made up of loose bubbles that coat the glass in large and loose webs of lacing.

A smack of robust roasted malt, coffee and bread with equally as profound citrus, pine and dank herbs from the hops. The background gets somewhat smokey and the earthiness of the herbal hops lingers.

Roasted malt with caramel and sticky sweetness with a slight coffee ground acidity. Hops are medium strength with a peak of yelow citrus followed by oily pine that sticks through the palate and lingers into the finish. After the drink there is a moderate bitterness with the sticky malt hanging on to couple with some alcohol and the oily pine resin.

Goes a bit flat after a while, better cold. Medium bodied with alcohol peeking through the malt curtains. Rather sticky and it takes a white for the bitterness to come though and being to dry the palate.

A good black IPA, peaks early with the aroma but can't quite follow up with such promise. Balanced malt and hops it just need more carbonation and a brighter hops to pop the way some others are able to do,

Pours a dark oily brown with a tan head and plenty of lace. Aroma has herbal hops, citrus and some roasted malt. In the taste, more unsweetened dark chocolate and coffee like malt flavor that has good hop balance. Some earthy bitters and dirty citrus round out the flavor. Full bodied and relatively smooth. Overall, you can't complain about a big balanced hoppy black ale. It does not suck at all.

With the dedicated attention to both IPA and porter, Dubhe surpasses the the limits of both styles with imperial strength and the unique addition of hemp seed for a spicy, herbal and botanical nuance.

Dubhe starts off with porter-like tendencies. Burnt molasses wraps around heavy toast, cocoa and strong coffee. Even as aromas suggest vibrant citrus and tropical fruit, its porter flavor but heightened intensity says otherwise to the early taste.

Developing dryness leaves way for hop dominance to grow- shedding its red grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple and mango character over the middle palate. Ribbons of earthy resins play out like pine, herbal grasses and pepper sneak in before finish.

Its late charge slathers on a malty-dry taste and texture, fueled by toast char, deeply resinous bittering and acute peppercorn. Even as more herbaceous flavors suggest cannabis- these seem more hop-derived while something akin to rye pangs away lightly on the palate.

The common flaw in "black" IPA is that they usually result in a hoppy porter and resemble American IPA in no way. However, the imperialized porter supports in Dubhe gives this dark beer a roundness that's even still commanded by hops.
