It was kind of cool. I don’t drink many dark lagers, so it’s always a fun twist up on a classic lager for me. Not to say dark lagers are just a twist, but they are for me because I rarely have them. This one was okay. Not really good, not really bad, just a lager that looked like Pepsi. Nothing very special about the taste or smell or anything, really just another lager. You could definitely taste higher quality ingredients as opposed to your run of the mill cheap lagers, bud, coors, etc. but that lager taste is still very apparent. Just okay. I’ll take it over cheapies any day.

Drinking this at home.
Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.
Looks dark brown almost black with a tannish foamy head that dropped quickly to a thin ring.
Smells malty, a little spicy and sweet.
Taste follows the nose nicely.
Mouth feel is creamy smooth.
Overall a very nice black lager that I would definitely drink again.

Requisite darkness applies along with an average size head and good lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate and chicory. Flavor is true to the spirit of a schwarzbier, with modest sweetness, some smoke, a strong roasted malt backbone and hops that are more spicy than citrusy. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish.

Bottle poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours dark mahogany brown with a frothy beige head that settles to a firm layer and laces beautifully.

S: Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, char, and a hint of smoke, dark fruit, earthy, a hint of pine, and some burnt sugar sweetness.

T: Roasty, char, coffee, hints of dark chocolate, and a touch of smoke, earthy, piney, herbal, subtle dark fruit, and a little burnt sugar and toffee sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, faintly creamy.

O: Feels bigger than one would expect from a 4% beer. Very nicely done.

Poured from a can into a tulip.

Pours nearly jet black. Excellent head and lacing.

Roasted malts on the nose blend with char and perhaps some faint hops.

Dark and roasted malts abound. However, some understated dark fruit and herbal flavors also balance things out.

The brew is solidly medium bodied but has decent carbonation and a good finish.

Overall, this is above average and checks the boxes well, but it's a bit muddled and one-note.

Excellent head production and retention. Body is a wonderfully appealing ebony color.

Nose is clean and roasty, featuring toffee, caramel, and toast, as well as nuts, dark fruit, cream, and banana. Slightly spicy and earthy hop note. Smells quite like a Schwarzbier from Germany, without noticeable flaw.

Similar flavor, adding a lightly smokey note to the profile found on the nose. Moderate and clean bitterness balanced against toasty (not overly roasty) malts. Supremely drinkable. Long finish.

This is an excellent American take on the style, very low in ABV but high in flavor. I'm more than a little surprised, and equally impressed.

Appearance: Pours a dark, near completely black color with a light tan head. SRM of 23-24. (3.75)

Aroma: Mild aromas. Maybe some roasted milk chocolate. Very simple. (3.25)

Flavor: Mild flavors too. Very clean. Some watered-down coffee with hints of chocolate. Then more clean watered-coffee. Nearly no bitterness. (3.50)

Feel: Lighter-bodied. Light carbonation. Very clean on the palate. (3.75)

Overall: It's an extremely light, clean, dark lager. It's the light beer of the dark craft beer world. Sort of like watered coffee. I prefer more flavor, but at 4% you have to respect the light cleanliness of this dark lager. (Final Rating: 3.53. Probably deserves a higher rating, but the aroma and flavors were mild)

[Original rating 2012-08-17] Pours dark brown with a thin tan head that recedes quickly. Aroma is roasted malt with a hint of caramel. Taste is pretty much the same, roasty malt with some sweetness. Not bad, better than I expected as I’m not a big fan of the style. Extra points for this much flavor in a 4% ABV beer.

12oz bottle poured into Duvel tulip. $2 for a single at the grocery store. BEST BEFORE 01/19/19K printed in a black rectangle on the bottom left corner of the main label. So it still has over 3 months of freshness in it.

Appearance - Pours a tan pancake batter head with moderately fine lacing, powerful stick and moderate-low retention. Body is clear but is such a dark mahogany brown that you can only see shadows on the other side. 4.75

Smell - Soy sauce, medium roasted character, and slight dark fruit. No off characters but a little bland. 3

Taste - Black coffee bitterness up front that becomes slightly sweetened by the malt in the middle. Tastes a lot like a black coffee that's been watered down and only very slightly sweetened and creamed to take the edge off the harshness. 4

Mouthfeel - Thin and water and aside from the kick up front, finishes pretty clean. 4

Overall - Probably not too bad in-style, and that's how I rate, so I'll begrudgingly have to give it decent marks despite not being a big fan of the beer or its style. 3.5

Baba has a thick, creamy, beige head, a dark, red-brown appearance, and some glass lacing. Aroma is of cream and dark bread crust. The flavor is similar, with acrid bitterness. Mouthfeel is low medium, and Baba finishes on the crisp side.

The pour jet black. The aroma is sort of muted for this style but if I really focus I get some faint roasted malts. The beer is too watery tasting, it needs more body & more flavor. I do prefer the German made versions of the schwarzbier a lot better, but this is a worth a try. There is a bottled on date on the side of the label. Cheers! C

Pours near black with an impressive tan/brown head. Looks like bold, especially for a Lager.
AROMA: Milk chocolate, cold metal, toasted breads.
TASTE: Bread and burnt malts, thin on the tongue.
Not as bold as its impressive appearance would suggest.

Beautiful milk chocolate color with a tan head. Cocoa notes on the nose and a light hop presence.

The taste is lightly smoky, rich cocoa notes, and the hops faintly in the background. A really well executed schwarzbier, IMHO.

Mmm, love this baba -great all around packaging, idea and sustainable resources, for the deets:

-12 0z. can poured into Tipping Point pub glass, finessed a 3/4'' light tan head over a near pitch black body. Deep clear caramel browns around as it's held up to a white screen. I'm reviewing it and posting as I enjoy...this is one of my favorite beer styles. Light lacing dissipates quickly, as does the head, leaving a fine foam ring.

-Rich malty aromas, caramel grains.....and clean freshness. Halfway down it gets thicker and richer, bigger in the nose. Awesome.

-Tastes as it smells, with a nice sharp cutoff from light hop treatment and ample carbo...a nice little bittering end to balance these malts just fine. Hard not to down it! (5 more in the box)

-Classic medium feel, clean, with a little lingering afterward to prompt thy thirst for!

-Hard for me to give this less than straight 5's, but-it's a little low on the abv%, and -does anyone ever get/give that?
Definitely a quality USA Schwarzbier that I would recommend to anyone with a clue.
UINTA BABA Black Lager! "Thank you, may I have another?!" Yah baby yah!

I'm not really a session beer person. I don't generally get anything under 6% abv because I simply don't trust such beer. However, in my experience, Utah seems to be the master of brewing such beer. It's probably because they can't sell anything higher than 4% abv outside of liquor stores or the brewery itself.

L: Lovely compass can. Nice art. Very thin but very dark. Not a typical appearance, in that sense. Just a centimeter of khaki head from the pour, but a film lingers for a good while and it has a well-carbonated mouthfeel.

S: Barely actually dominates the profile. Not wheat, not oats. It's recognizably barley, and rather fresh. Following that is an ashy charcoal. That's it. Just malted barley and smoke.

T: Jesus that is simple. That bready barley is basically all there is to this. A touch of apple and maybe apricot, then a plain dry smoke on the finish, like charcoal.

F: Clean dry finish with the consistency of tea.

O: Could use some more sweetness, or coffee, or hops. Really any additional flavor would likely improve this. Easily the plainest beer I have ever had. It has absolutely no off-flavors. It may as well be sparkling mineral water with charcoal.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Best by 040818 on side of label.

A: Black body with brown edges and dense, rocky 1-2 finger beige head with good retention and lacing.

S: Mostly roasted dark malts with light touch of smoke and light caramel/cola aroma.

T: Flavor is pretty robust for 4%ABV — roasty, a bit too much for schwarzbier, but enjoyable and not at all harsh. Light cola and caramel is in the background with a woody character in there too. A little chalky/minerally in the finish, some licorice maybe. No yeast character and low-medium bitterness.

M: Smooth but a bit chalky, blocky in the finish. Light body and medium carbonation.

O: An enjoyable dark lager for sure, especially at session strength.

Recently was gifted a few bottles of these. It is a beautiful, dark beer that smells phenomenal. It's feel was very creamy. To me, it has a strong coffee taste -- which as a non-coffee drinker was slightly off-putting. Even so, it was rich and delicious.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a dark brown almost black color with a thin white to off white foamy head that dissipated within a nice minute. Thin filmy to almost bubbly lacing glosses around the glass nicely. The aroma has some grainy breadiness riding into a sly malted spice underneath, I want to say black pepper, but somehow, that even seems like a stretch, somewhat. I want to say it comes off a lil’ bit like freshly baked bread. The flavor is grainy sweet with that spice coming back to make an effort to balance. Sly use of the bread flowing into the aftertaste and then into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium. Use of spice displays some harshness, but not overly done. Overall, schwarzbier or just regular Euro black lager. I’d like to say Euro black lager, ’cause that’s some weird German yeast if that’s what they used.

Uinta Brewing - my first offering from their stable of beers - a good first offering...

Pours a richly black color out of the can, small head but with good lacing down the pint glass. The smell was practically non-existent - try as I might, there was nothing I could really note of the brew - nothing. The feel was lightly carbonated, leaning towards being medium-bodied, and quite smooth on the tongue. Though I couldn't smell anything of consequence, the taste was uniquely malty in my opinion making it quite drinkable. Thought it might not be the best black lager I've had, it was a solid offering for the style.
