Thick dark white head. Has a nice dark look. Has a roasted smell. Can taste roasted malts along with hops. Tastes a bit watered down. Would like for it to have more flavor.

Baba – Black Lager (4%) - Uinta Brewing (Utah)
☆☆☆

App: Pours as black as black can be, with a nice one and a half finger tan head that sticks around very well and leaves nice, light lacing in the glass. Almost totally opaque.

Smell: Light chocolatey and roasted malt nose. Maybe I'm crazy, but I always smell roast turkey in these darker, more roasted lagers. Maybe its just roasted proteins? Overall, nose is light and pleasant. Some hints of dark, caramelized sugars like butterscotch with just a hint of molasses. Meaty.

Taste: Dry and clean in the foretaste. Heavy malt body balanced by subtle lager yeast. Almost no hops characteristics to note, other than a light and pleasant bitterness on the back of the throat. Hints of roasted pecan and coco. Every so slightly metallic on the finish.Very sessionable. Well crafted but unremarkable.

Mouth: Pretty light bodied for the malt profile. Carb is subtle, a little softer than I expect in a lager.

Home tasting, 12oz can into Snifter. 1/11/14.

[Poured into a straight Sam Adams glass]

I: A friend and I were in Whole Foods searching for a new beer to try, and spotted the last six pack of Baba. Sadly we only paid attention to the presentation, and not the style. I admit that I not very fond of lagers, but hey, I'm open to unique takes on the style.

B: [4.00% ABV. 12 Fl. OZ. 04/11/12] I really appreciate the amount of information on this bottle, sadly no back story. Bottle date, recommendation, ingredients (water, organic barley malt, hops, and yeast), organic label, and etc... The bottles glass is also working on this compass theme which is very interesting.

A: Black body with no transparency, with a foamy/frothy head (fast dissipation), and scattered lacing.

S: Smells like a lager. Grassy, some pine, light chocolate, molasses, and bread malt.

T: Chocolate, grassy, bread malt, and molasses. Safe to say that it follows the nose pretty well.

M: Slightly dry/slick/crisp finish, light/watery body, moderate carbonation, and little alcohol presence.

O: One of the best lagers I've ever had, but that's not saying much. The style is just isn't that great to my palate. This was like Steinlager Pure with cocoa added. The high point of the brew would be the presentation. It's better than domestic beer, but doesn't stand out among the craft. I don't recommend and wouldn't buy.

Bottled on 10/6/11.

First thing I have to say is that this is an awesome bottle. I love the paper labels and the raised compass pattern on the glass itself.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson brown with a 1 inch puffy beige head that settles to a film. Blotchy patterns of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is pretty much solely dark roasted malt and maybe some slight campfire/smoke aromas. Taste pretty much follows suit with roasted dark malt as really the only flavor. There is a slight metallic flavor on the aftertaste too. This beer has a pretty thin body with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average lager that is one dimensional in both smell and flavor.

Drinking this 3 days before the "drink by" date, but since it's still within I'll review.
A: pours a very very dark brown, almost black. Thin 2 finger head quickly dissipates to nothing. Looks a lot like a glass of coke or Pepsi.
S: not much going on here, possibly because the older can. Faint sweet smell, also a slight toasty aroma.
T: I'm tasting a lot of roasty, smokey notes. Coffee and dark bitter chocolate a faint but present. Slightly sweet. After-taste that remains reminds me a lot of stout/porter finish. Cleans from the mouth quickly.
M: Thin taste, also cleans from the mouth quickly.
Overall: Average to above average black lager, good alternative to a stout or porter if your looking to pick up those flavors.
