Baba Black Lager pours an almost black color with a small tan lacing head. Roasted malt aroma. Taste has a nice roasted flavor, with some smoke. Good body and feel. Overall very solid.

Unita Brewing Co. "Baba Black Lager"
12 fl. oz, brown glass bottle, "BEST BEFORE 03/25/16" but not sampled until 08/15/16
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ (thanks again for the old beer friends!)

Unfortunately there is a slight bit of oxidation to this sample. Papery... probably enhanced caramel notes... I can work around that though, and given that I really like it and will score it well I see no reason not to simply proceed with this review whereas I would normally just drink the beer and make a note to find a fresher sample for later. With that said...

It offers the typical appearance of a German Schwarzbier with very good head retention and even more impressive lacing. Rings of lacing are left behind, building with each sip into an ever growing mountain range.

The aroma is roasty with a clean, mildly sweetish malt that hints at chocolate and caramel. Leafy, floral, and perhaps slightly grassy hops linger in the background.

The flavor is fuller: toasty, caramelish, grainy, roasty, subtly smoky, bittersweet chocolate. It's delicately bitter, allowing the roasted malts to balance in their own way. If I have to vary from the style to describe the maltiness I'll say it's more like a porter than a stout; and the bittersweet chocolate and not-burnt/softly coffee-like roastiness lingers in the finish along with what bitterness is there. The leafy, floral, and somewhat grassy hops found in the aroma are slightly fuller, accentuating the malt but never distracting from it. They've really hit the mark with the balance on this one, perfectly delivering smooth roasted malt notes that are drizzled in medium caramel against a moderate bitterness, and without any real dark malt acidity.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium on body and smooth with a restrained carbonation level that lends a gentle caress to the tongue before becoming more velvety.

Overall: An impressive schwarz. It's not easy to get the balance right on this style, and they've done it exceptionally well. Had I been given this blind, I'd have had no doubt that it came out of Germany. Superb! And most likely the best beer that I've had from Uinta (at least for their regular beers).

I enjoyed this very much.
Pours a pretty damn dark beer. Decent, lasting head
Aroma was a little weak in revealing it's contents. Very light smell of your roasted malts, some chocolate and coffee
Taste of it was absolutely great. Better presence of roasted malts on the tongue, decent chocolate and certainly not too bitter or dry, perfect beer to introduce to one of those who are afraid of dark beers
Feel: A good amount of carbonation. A touch thin, but what do you expect out of a low ABV black lager? It certainly kept me coming back for more
Overall, I definitely will try to have it again, or I'll try to make my own version with more body to it, but definitely would be a go to if I could get it more

Black in color with minimal penetration to light. There's a solid inch of dense beige foam sitting on top. Light lacing. The aroma is packed with dark malt and chocolate. I taste smooth dark malt and dark chocolate. The mouth is very smooth and creamy.

This schwartzbier pours a light black color with a slight ruby tint and a medium foamy white head. The smell is quite malty and sweet with roasted grains and burnt sugar dominating. Much like the smell the initial flavor is malt dominant with roasted grains, toffee, and molasses coming to the forefront, the finish surprisingly has a significant, but not overpowering hop kick though that lends a very mild pine undertone. The body is on the high end of medium and the finish is pretty creamy, almost like a stout lite with hops. I would say that this is a little overly sweet for my tastes, but it is well balanced and there is a nice flavor profile. All around a good schwartzbier and one of the most interesting examples of this style that I’ve had.

Part of a Uinta 12er with 4 different brews, lets give this one a whirl. Popping the top I get a a nice chocolate graham creacker smell. Pours into my newly aquired Poker Showart Beah Glass to a deep brown with a tan fine bubble head. On the taste this brew is nicely roasted malts, good body and solid mouthfeel. Nicely charred throughout with a bitter finish that twangs sweet right at the aftertaste. A refreshing brew and I must say a sessioner candidate at only 4% ABV. I will seek out again. Spot on for style.

From a bottle marked best by 6/24/16. Pours black with a finger of tan head. Smell is smoky with some notes of coffee and malt. Light and smooth mouthfeel. Taste is subtle with smoky malt flavors and a touch of hop bitterness. Pretty good. This is not like other black lagers that I've had. Reminds me of a Rauchbier actually (smoky taste and it uses barley).

Really nice and simple black lager. It looks like a root beer: dark brown, clear, and with a nice tan head that hangs around and laces the glass. The smell is super subtle and balanced, with no distinct notes overwhelming the nose. The taste is also subtle, with sweet malt notes and just the slightest hop bite at the end. For Stacey, this beer does NOT taste like an American lager; she'll like it

Very nice aromas of vanilla, caramel and candied smoke . . . Yes, I made that up. Pours dark brown . . . Almost black like a porter but typical schwarzbier look. Easy pour produces a nice fluffy head. Flavors are roasty with a pleasant candied sweetness. Feel is smooth and creamy. Overall, this is a unique and well executed take on the style.

L: very dark brown almost black in color.
S: woody almost coffee like smell
T: woody with hints of chocolate but very bread like
F: excellent crisp feel that doesn't linger. Perfect!
O: a good beer when choices of this type are scarce but still one I would have again.

L: Very dark brown, almost black, with a small off white head and lots of residual lacing

S: Dark roasted malt, some coffee

T: First you get a dose of roasted malt bitterness, some coffee, and it finishes with toasted bread sweetness and a faint kiss of hop bitterness. Very well balanced, almost like a light porter or session stout.

F: Nice full body, surprising body from a 4% lager.

Look: Black in color. Soft, khaki-colored head.

Smell: Roasted barley malt. Salt.

Taste: A malty, roasted flavor in the front gives way to a smoked malt middle, finished with a hop bitterness that doesn't have the same assertiveness in every sip.

Feel: Nice body, mouthfeel, and carbonation for a beer of this style.

Very good quality, sessionable, flavorful black lager that reminds me more of a porter or stout.

S- caramel popcorn, sweet malty notes as well
T- light toasted malts some caramel, does seem to have off-flavor of butter as well
F- medium-bodied, crisp
O- not sure what organic ing. do to my beer, not sure if off-flavor is intentional

This is a surprisingly good beer that I had with brussels sprouts in winter.
And if that is too precise a pairing, you probably will enjoy it by itself as I did also.
This almost is a classic rendition as I remember the style.
The only improvement I can suggest is I found the hops and roasted malt to dry the mouth a bit too much.

A- Pours black with hints of deep crimson red when shown to light. Large, fluffy, light khaki head.
S- Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate
T- Subdued version of the nose although still robust and a bit smokey. Tastes like a porter, drinks like a lager.
M- Smooth, full-flavored body, yet highly drinkable, crisp and doesn't stick around in the mouth long.
O- I enjoyed this beer quite a bit, it has a smokey, roasted, and robust flavor yet it remains crisp, refreshing, and easily drinkable.

Another Utah beer in my series of Utah beers with my friends. This beer fits the style of a schwarzbier, although still a little light, due, in my opinion, to the Utah beer laws. There is an initial yeasty smell, almost cheesy.

12 oz can.

Pours deep brown with ruby highlights. A small light tan head sits on top and leaves a fair amount of lacing. Roasted malt, coffee, and light herbal hops in the aroma. The coffee lingers in the taste and makes for a bitter finish. Medium light body and clean. The bitterness from the roasted malt and hops is just a little too much.

This beer pours a reddish tinged black with a small but lasting head. The aroma start with vague wood smoke, rubber, coal, and cooked bulgar. The flavor leads with that slight wood smoke, followed by tart cherry, dark chocolate, and toasted seeds. The mouthfeel is thin but fluffy. Overall this is a nice little beer for when the mood for dark strike, but you want something lighter bodied as well.

Great packaging. Wicked look. This beer is excellent with food. But most importantly it's cheap.
Great black lager for people that do not like black lagers and excellent introduction to these type of brews.

Rootbeer colored body, 70% opaque. Head is the creamiest I've probably ever seen. Reminds me of a thick ice-cream melted root beer float. 2 fingers and it stays there. Lace is thick and heavy.

Aromas of smoke, cured meats, salami, pastrami...and faint licorice.

Flavor is somewhat lacking; some cola flavors, brown bread crusts, cactus pear, scorched malts.

Feel is underwhelming, adjunct lager-like, very thin, very unsubstantial. Semi dry finish.

Overall impressions : started off like a pretty solid beer but once it hit my lips, everything went downhill. I bought two, I may pawn the second one off.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a fine one finger light brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee, a hint of dark fruit. Flavor is dry, dark toasted malt with a hint of char, mild dark chocolate and coffee; finishes with a light grass hops bitterness. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A quite nicely done schwarzbier, hitting all the right notes with perhaps a bit more charry toastiness than most, which is nice. Full flavored for a 4% beer, impressive. I wouldn't mind tasting an imperial version of this one, but this delivers what it promises for a smaller version of the style. Well done.

Baba the Logger

In days of yore, when asked of your
Parents many chores, to have done for
The makings of a taking
For egg-bakings and tasteful shakings
Upon the maiden's floor.

And who did taste but he, while lost
Turnt amidst a blurring moss
When once did he walk, a man of log
Who longed as he strode a waking bog.
With a great big grin, strolling a muck-strewn aisle.

Baba the Logger, who once did offer
His right wife proper
With iron and leather, a hunk of his leg
While whispers echoed face to face.
The mirthful intent did wander.
