Complex and drinkable, Sea Legs delivers flavors of roasted malt and chocolate. Sea Legs was aged in Bourbon Barrels for nearly 12 months adding toasted vanilla and bourbon notes to the flavor profile. This Medium-bodied Baltic Porter has a complex malt profile and mild hop bitterness. With a hidden ABV of 8%, Sea Legs is a siren of a beer.

On pour: walnut brown body, light tan head that disappears quickly. Smell is sweet whisky, vanilla,
Taste is roasty malt, vanilla, plum, a stand out bourbon body, and a light coffee finish. The whisky is surprisingly present, much more so than most “bourbon barrel aged” beers I’ve had. It actually through me off the first bottle I had, but I’m glad I bought a 6er because damn is it delicious.
The alcohol is somewhat noticeable after a sip, but it is pretty well masked considering the %. Feel is good, not over carbonated or too watery.
All in all, this is the whisky beer other beers want to be. Also, I dig the bottle shape and labeling of this release.

12 oz bottle, 9.5% ABV, into boiler snifter. Bottled on 9/16/20.

Deep black with some brown, has a bubbly khaki head of 1/2 finger.

Aroma is a complex melange of tobacco, sticky barrel, vanilla, caramel, sarsaparilla, slight leather, and floral vanilla bean.

Flavor is quite a bit more on the bitter side than the nose would suggest. Starts with tobacco and piney hop. Some slight caramel and bourbon barrel semi-sweetness. Also a bit of sarsaparilla and vanilla, but all of these flavors are kind of 2D, while the tobacco and grassy/piney hop stay front and center.

Feel is on the thin side as expected for a baltic porter, but a bit thinner than I'd like. Surprisingly the heat is kept in check, and there's a pleasant stickiness and toast overall. Ends with slight burning barrel.

Overall, good but not great. This would be a great introductory barrel aged beer for people new to the style. I could see 2013 me being blown away by something like this. Now however there are too many great choices that this one would easily get swept under the rug. $11.99/6 pack is about right.

Dark brown with some red highlights if you're looking for them. Thin dark tan head on top. Not having much experience with baltic porters, the aroma is unlike many beers I have smelled. It's incredibly pungent with an aroma of sour cherries and dried fruit with an undercurrent of dark roasted malts. There's a hint of earthy booze after a good swirl too. The flavor follows the nose with that stone fruit flavor that comes close to being tart up front but then seems to transition to roasty, only then to actually end up being a little tart in the back end. There's a smokiness in there that can be considered balancing too. The tartness and the roasted malt flavor create a profile that is very interesting, if not necessarily my favorite thing to drink. It leaves me craving a bigger hop presence to balance the bolder fruit flavors, but I can chalk that up to personal preference. In the end, not a beer I would come back to, but also one of the more interesting beers I've had in a while.

Black with a small beige head. Very complex nose. Nose of roasted malts, coffee, bakers chocolate, cacao, oak. Taste is a wonderful combination of burnt toast, coffee, chocolate, figs, roasted malts, cocoa. Thin mouthfeel but goes down too easy. Definitely a top shelf porter.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.

A: Very dark brown and opaque, with a two-finger creamy tan head. Decent retention. Minimal visible carbonation after the initial pour.

S: Nice deep roasted malts, bitter cacao nibs, some fresh roasted coffee. A bit creamy sweet, and some old leather – in a pleasant way. Pretty decent on the nose.

T: Follows the nose well. Big roasted malts, punch of chocolate (dark, bakers and cacao nibs), coffee and mocha. A creamy sweetness billows up to balance the chocolate. There are hints of a sweet nuttiness and tobacco as the swallow, along with some hop and roasted bitterness that show up to prevent this from being overly sweet. Bittersweet chocolate in the hang becomes the overall impression.

O: Nice creamy mouthfeel - good heft for the style but not overly thick. Relatively low carbonation sensation, and the alcohol flavors are restrained.

O: Pretty enjoyable beer. Nothing to make it jump out from other well-made Baltic porters, but there isn’t a lot to complain about.

Bottled on 11/26/12, pours pitch black color with a massive 2 finger foamy tan head that fades slowly and leaves decent spotty lacing. Much better looking head and lacing than expected for a beer that's almost 4 years old in the bottle.

Smells of roasted nuts, cocoa powder, maple syrup, woody notes, vanilla, molasses and what almost seems like bourbon from the woody and chocolate sweetness combo. A lot of earthy notes and toffee-like malty sweetness trail with coffee grinds and roasty notes. Quite nice to inhale, I really like the oak barrel influence.

Tastes of chocolate and dark fruit up front, followed by vanilla, oaky notes, cocoa powder, brown sugar, coffee grinds, toffee, faint piney hops, peat moss and/or bourbon, charred wood, roasted grains, marshmallow and sweet malty general aspects which show off all of the porter malts which soaked in the oak barrel components. The sweetness and charred woody notes completely mask the 8% ABV.

Mouthfeel is thin and smooth with flat carbonation, char and fruity notes that help make it complex as the medium to chewy body slides down effortlessly. Really nice barrel aged porter with a sweetness that doesn't go over the top into cloying territory and keeps this nice to drink slowly. A really tasty beer overall.

I had a chance to buy a bomber on close out , so being a dark porter, well I gave it a shot .
I was so pleasantly surprised by the overall brew that I went back and bought all the rest of the bombers :)

Definitely one of the coolest label designs !!
I like most of my brews above 8%, but I'm going to keep one of these chilled to enjoy with any barbecue or hearty meal .
Highly recommended even though I like them a little thicker and boozier :)
