500ml bottle with gold foil

Pours with a cloudy, amber/yellow hue, foaming tall, 2inch head forms in the tall glass

Smell, esters of bananas, fruity, clove also coming through, yeasty aroma

Taste, bananas, bananas, even served cold theres a warming fruitiness, little hint of alcohol, great drinkability

An outstanding hefe, the best so far

Paid $1.99 for a 500mL bottle

The apperance is almost like an oatmeal stout, kind of lumpy white head and a nice golden lager base, no real signs of lacing. The aroma was extremely pleasant of citrus, mixed spices and a little grainy as well.

The taste is classic German Hefe-Weisse, back from my 16yr old days of Germany it's still the same. A great kick of banana taste and the spice was like a wheat-clove hybrid, very interesting. The mouthfeel is nice and light and the drinkability is the same, an easy-going beer that goes well with dinner.

Final Thought: I saved this for review #20 because it reminds me of the good ol' days in Germany when 16 meant 16, and German pilsners were $.75 a 500mL can or bottle in the stores....

Great wheat beer. Pours a cloudy golden color with a big white head. The smell is good..clove,banana. The taste is very good..cloves and citrus come out. Very refreshing, easy to drink wheat beer. I had mine without the lemon. Does not need it. I would get this again.

Had on tap at home (tapped the keg yesterday). Lighter than expected taste, with no bitterness (you can keep the lemons away). Bright white head with some nice lacing down the sides of the glass. Wheat flavor becomes more pronounced (though still one would hesitate to say powerful) as the brew warms up. A hint of dryness toward the back of the palate lends an agreeable tang to the finish. As beers for summer go, this beer would be very hard to top. Enjoy!

Pours out a hazy, peachy orange with a massive head, smells nice and fruity, like a banana split. Taste is suprisingly mellow, a bit of the common clove-banana hefe flavor but remarkably clean and well balanced, a real thirst-quencher. A mild tart lemony finish, please do not spoil this with a lemon, this is good stuff. A bit burpy but still really drinkable beer.

This is weird stuff. Interesting, but weird.

Huge white head piles up and slowly, slowly dies down over a murky, yellowy orange. It smells sweet, and when you lean in you get a funky yeasty smell, with a bit of fermenting straw thrown in. It's light-bodied, fine fizziness has a distinct banana flavor livened with lemon, a long lingering lemon that dies down to a prickle and dares you to see what it can do to you next.

It took me a while to drink it; this is too weird for me.

big white head head over a cloudy golden colored beer. a beautiful hefe. big clove and banana character in the smell . yeast and sweet spices present. faint citrus aromas as well.
taste: cloves, just shy of ripe, banana flavor, bread, lemon and orange citrus flavors. light caramel tastes become present as it warms. delicate hops.
medium mouthfeel with strong carbonation. goes down really well.
overall an excellent beer especially on a hot day. very refreshing.

the beer has a great cloudy honey/marmalade color with a great big fluffy head. The nose had a pretty typical but relatively soft clove aroma with plenty of banana fruitiness.

The body of the beer was light, and the full carbonation and big head made the beer nice and creamy. The taste actually had more breadiness than many other hefes I've tasted. It was interesting, but the strong yeast pang was somewhat muted. The wheat was very light on the tongue, with sweetish banana flavors leaving off after the malt, finally reaching a quick tart finish.

I liked this beer, but I think there are other hefes that are more interesting. You definitely get some of the refreshing wheat and light creamy body but the breadiness removes a lot of the truly quenching tartness and acidity. Perhaps my favorite parts of this beer are its nice rich color and the funny Franciscan monk that graces the label.

There is a big white head on top of a slightly cloudy golden amber colored beer. Aroma is a fresh spicey scent with a nice hint of banana in the background. The taste starts out with the spiceiness that includes the traditional hint of clove. A gathering sweetness overcomes the spicy to finish with a tasty banana note at the end. I thoroughly enjoy drinking this beer every time I try it.

A truly awesome Heffe. This one poured a deep cloudy yellow with a medium sized head that lasted awhile before settling into a nice pillow on top of the beer. The smell was slighly of grain but the yeast shone through as well as the light honey scent. The taste was fantastic with a huge bananna flavor, and a slight citrus flavor in the backround. I think this was a very fresh keg because this beer was outstanding. Highly recommended.

poured out a nice hazy golden yellow color.
the head was a nice 1 inch and fairly creamy in appearance.
quite nice to look at
smell - clove, and some fruitiness and wheaty
taste, this one hit big with a clove up front then finished off with some light fruitiness, not overly balanced in my opinion. The clove to me was not very refreshing as a hefe would tend to be with more sweetness..
mouthfeel was carbonation and the head seemed more fizzy then creamy in the mouth
all in all it was a decent beer, but I was not blown away based on what I expected. I tried it once by floating a small lemon slice, it was better in my opinion, becasue that helped to ward off the big clove flavor.

This may be the best example of a Hefe that I have had yet. Presented in a green bottle, you could see the cloudy beer and sediment deposit easily.
Poured into a pint glass this beer had nice yellow body with no clarity at all. The creamy white head lasted the whole time while drinking it.
Smells like a wheat with the mild wheat malt smell and faint fruity aroma.
I was impressed with the taste. taking a drink I noticed an unusually smooth and creamy mouthfeel with fine carbonation. The best feature was the dry, only slightly sweet fruity taste that went down very nicely. This dryness was great compared to many hefes with over the top banana/pineapple sweetness. That makes it very drinkable and recommended.

The first thing that strinkes me about this beer is the label. What a fantastic label! That monk is perhaps the mos immense thing i've seen in a while...lets see how the beer itself holds up...

Pours a cloudy peachy tan colour with a good, thick, tan head. The body is nice and cloudy and leaves a small amount of off-white sediment.

The aroma is very fruity, particularly oranges, peaches, and papaya, with a good brown bread character.

The taste is gorgeous. The Bready tones are beautifully complimented with pineapple and nectarine hits, with a small spicy character lurking in there.

The beer is surprisingly clean and crisp, and has a brilliant drinkability. Very refreshing indeed!

As with other really good hefe's, the drinkability factor is just off the charts! Hot and humid day, there's nothing like a great Hefe to quench that thirst... actually, to make you want another dozen or so. This poured a hazy orange with a fluffy cotton white head and simple lacing down the glass. Hints of bananna, clove and citrus in the smell. Nice maltiness and sweetness in the initial taste with big fruits and more clove with a nice prickly bitterness on the aftertaste. This is a fantastic brew, I've become a huge fan of Hefe's this year and I'm glad to be able to taste some of the best that Germany has to offer. This is a little bit lighter than Paulaner Hefe-Weisse which is probably my all time favorite (right now) but I have many more to sample. The absolute most refreshing drink on earth.... I'll have another 22oz...

12 ounce green bottle, as in the posted picture, purchased from Wilbur's Wine & Spirits in Fort Collins, CO

Lovely cloudy-orange beer with a huge head that lasted the whole glass, with lots of sticky lacing.

Pronounced lemon-yeast aroma, with a hint of something warm -- maybe clove?

Taste was really delightful -- mild, citrus with a touch of yeasty banana, and a lingering spicey, almost peppery clove-like aftertaste. Not as heavy as Paulaner or Weihenstaphaner -- milder, less forward, and a bit less hops bitterness.

Amazing mouthfeel for this style of beer: quite smooth and rounded.

At 5.0%, and such a pleasant taste, you could drink these comfortably for a long session.

Overall, I was quite plasantly surprised and so was my wife, who generally doesn't care much for Bavarian non-pilsner beers. She actually preferred this to Paulaner's Hefeweizen. Not sure I'd say the same, but the two are pretty close.

This brew is a dark orange colored drink, with a well-crafted white foam head on top. Yeasties floating aroud like fish food. The scent is pretty standard for hefes, not as pronounced as some. As for the taste it is the classic german hefe taste, 'naners, fruits, wheat, less in-your-face that say a weihestephaner but a very good taste. Worth a taste.

On tap at Mt Angel brewery in Oregon. Very nice sour wheat and honeyish aroma, very appetizing. The beer is a pale hazy orange in colour with a small wispy pure white head. The taste is very fresh and light, some bananas and honey, the taste is not as pronounced as Paulaner Hefe, but its good. It seems a little carbonated, but its actually ok. This was very drinkable with the Smoked ribs I had. A nice summer beer.

Slightly orange with a big ole white head. Aroma features bannana, zesty lemon and a bit of spice. Flavor is dead on for a easy drinking, refreshing, yet interesting brew. Spicy pepper, smooth bannana, Orange and Lemon. Mouthfeel is moderatly light, carbonation is strong. Another great summer drinkin' beer.

Poured a cloudy light orange color with a billowing white head that lasted quite a long time. Smell of wheat with just a miniscule note of citrus. Taste is wheaty with a little bit of fruity sweetness, I'm not really getting much clove or spice from this one. This is pretty drinkable and mouthfeel was average but i just don't think there was enough to this beer to keep me coming back. I can't really sit and ponder over this beer for a long period of time and that's what i'm really looking for while i'm on my college budget. Overall, it's a solid brew maybe i'd session it if i had a bit more money

Extremely cloudy mango color, with a creamy head leaving sticky lacing. Nose of wheat, and a slight citrus hop. Full-bodied with ticklish carbonation. Wheat initially hits the palate, with cloves emerging especially on the way down, very smoothly, a spicey yet mellow finish. Just-perceptible hop profile adds to the flavor. Good brew with characteristics that are just interesting enough to stand out but not be boring, refreshing and relaxing, perfect for the summer months. I could drink this all day.

Opaque golden color with an massive head made of tiny bubbles. Nothing too exciting in the smell, yeast, wheat. Yes, it's a hefe weizen.

Yeast and wheat in the smell as usual. Some banana, and some lemon. No grapefruit, which I appreciated. Very smooth and enjoyable mouthfeel. This beer is so drinkable. I could sip on that for the night. More lemon than hops in the aftertaste. Hops were more present than in otehr hefe weizen, but still well balanced and discrete. Very refreshing. A pleasure in the mouth.

Sampled on tap at the Moscow "Beerhouse" on 4/2/04. Came out a beautiful cloudy yellow under a two finger white head with great body and retention, leaving some mighty fine lacing. The nose is well balanced, with clove and yeast in perfect harmony. The mouth is light and fairly prickly - maybe not quite enough carbonation for the style. The opening is a good combination of citrus, spice and yeast. There's just a hint of hoppy bitterness, but this is all about the yeast and spice. A nice crisp tart aftertaste with plenty of coriander leaves you thirsting for more. This is certainly a good rendition of the style.

Poured out a light banana color with quite a bit of carbonation. Smell consists of some soft bananas, wheat, and some lemon come to mind as well. Taste is quite good. This beer has quite a bit of carbonation, but yet it's very smooth. Nice mixture of banana and cloves, but it's mostly cloves in this hefe. Finishes almost like club soda, quite dry. But overall this is a pretty good hefe that's easily avaiable. Perfect for the summer months.

16.9 ounce brown bottle with gold foil top. Pours a beautiful orange-golden haze with a huge white head that fades to a thin 1/4" lace that sticks around. Very classy and elegant looking. Thick yeast gives a heavy haze that hardly allows light to come through.
The smell is of nicely fermented yeast, some light clove or other spice and that oh so yummy hefe taste. Not too much citrus, as compared to some of the US hefes.
The taste is so refreshing. It's a hefe weizen as it was made to be. The yeast strain is so unique and not overdone. It reminds me of my favorite, Allagash, without the abundant spices. Cloudy fruit is the last taste to come on, and presents itself a somewhat weak banana, light mold (mmm unfiltered!) and clove. This is such a great beer for relaxing. Has such a wheaty goodness, it slips and slides like only an authentic hefe can. Wonderful.
Mouthfeel is perfectly balanced, and has good thickness from the heavy amount of yeast. I could drink these all day and all night from March 20th to Sept 22nd. I wish I could find the big bottles in quantity though. I have to buy each 16.9 er for $3 which is decent, but adds up if you're looking to waste a lazy summer afternoon.

--Update---
More of a lament really. I bought a sixer of these for $10. I thought I was getting a deal. They were green 12 ounce bottles. As I anxiously opened them, I smelled something very much like stale urine and farts. They skunked in the cooler! I still drank them, but only because it was nice enough out to pound them. Why would you ever put out some of a beer brand in green glass when you ALSO put it out in brown??? BLEEEAAACCHHH!!!

served from green 33 cL bottles...

didn't see a freshness date and the green bottles and shady store i bought these from made me worry. it turned out to be a fairly fresh-tasting batch. no oxidation. super billowy head that exploded out the bottle. head receded to a nice creamy collar. beautiful cloudy golden color. aroma of cloves, bananas and fresh bread. nice nose!
taste was quite nice. very refreshing sweetness. the yeast really do their job in this beer and impart a nice banana/clovey goodness into it. lots and lots of yeast sediment on the bottom of the bottle should be swirled right in for a mroe robust yeasty flavor, if that's your preference. mouthfeel may have suffered a tiny bit -- i don't know when these were bottled, but it very well may have been a long time ago. lacked a tiny bit of crisp bite in the mouthfeel. overall, a very very drinkable beer. a classic hefeweiss. still haven't found an american version that even approaches franziskaner.
