A: Pours a clear yellow/golden color with a small white head that settled quickly. Little lacing to speak of.

S: Some grass, as well as some malt and a little bit of fruit, little bit of skunk.

T: Pretty malty with a little bit of caramel. There is a grainy characteristic as well.

M/D: Medium bodied, but smooth. Overall its ok, not great. I am guessing that the trip overseas has a lot to do with this. On tap, I bet its a whole different beer.

Ripe orange topped by a largish head of bone white foam that doesn't look overly sticky. In time, a fine sheet of lace is laid down on the upper reaches of the glass, but more than half of it melts away within minutes.

The nose isn't Marzen-like. Neither is it very appealing. In fact, it reminds me of a macro lager; a lot of sour grain and musty hops, but little Oktoberfest character at all. Where's the toasted malt? The beer makes a minor comeback on the palate (operative word: minor).

It doesn't really taste like the stated style either. It's undermalted with almost none of the sweet, toasted, caramel malt flavor that is the hallmark of the Oktoberfest style. Plain grain and floral hops dominate the flavor profile. There's very little sweetness initially, more as the beer warms.

If the brewery is to be believed, Spaten Oktoberfestbier is the original Marzen/Oktoberfest. If that's true, then this is a classic example of the original having been surpassed by legions of its followers. I'd suggest leaving this one on the shelves. There are many, many versions of this style are more deserving of your time and thirst.

11.2oz green bottle with a cryptic looking freshness code.

LOOK: Brandishes a clear copper color, enough head and lacing action to get by

SMELL: Loaf of bread, grape skin, nutty, very grassy, faint caramel, floral hop, mineral, clean

TASTE: Semi-crisp, slick, slightly sweet, bready, cake, moderate hop bitterness, flat herbal flavor, slightly spicy, hint of alcohol, very dry toasted grainy finish

For its travels and most likely its preparation for the trip the US it ends up being a pretty good lager. In the world of beer and Oktoberfest it is a pretty easy assumption that this beer tastes a lot better from the source but with that said ... the beer that is sent over is certain worth getting.

Pours a crystal clear light copper with no head ad really no lacing, but very clean lookin. Smell is very malty, with a classic lager like smell. Taste is a bit more intresting with some subtle roasted hints, and very crisp, clean short, dry finish. Goes down very easy and could put down these all night if I wasn't careful. Agood example of the style.

Served in a tulip cold at at the Alpine Bar in Hofbrauhaus in Abbottstown, PA.
A - The appearance is a deep amber w/ golden highlights and a white head. There is a slight amount of lace that accumulates.

S - A mostly malty scent w/ apple and pear accents. The nose is fragrant w/ the sweetness of gentle malt.

M - A medium light body w/ fruity maltiness. The feel is semi-sweet w/ a very clean finish and ample carbonation.

T - Very smooth taste of malt w/ more apple/pear flavor as hinted at in the nose. The delicious flavor of German malts dominate the taste w/ finesse. There is the taste of lager yeast w/ a slightly tangy crispness that makes an impression. A light twiggy, woody flavor eases in as the beer gets warmer. The taste is a step up from a helles lager w/ the nuance of medium toasted malts.

D - A very tasty fest for sure, but restrained and more finesse than some American versions. A seriously easy to drink lager w/ session capability and strength. There could be a tad more depth, but a good representation of the style. I could certainly taste more than 2 of these paired w/ a bratwurst or weissewurst.

I am jumping right into this bottle, part of a recent drop-off from my local, in-person trader, tone77. It is too late for the #OktoberfestChallenge2016, but never too late for a review.

A Pop! of the cap to get things started & I was off and running. A heavy-handed pour caused three fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head to rush to the top of the glass before starting to slowly fall back. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-plus quality clarity. I could see into the future with this one! Nose had a grassy, earthy scent, the kind that I like in the style as they can be quite malty. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste had a nutty, bready, caramelized flavor, not at all bitter, but not overly sweet, either. It was definitely malt-driven, but that was fine by me, not unexpected and certainly in keeping with the style. Finish was in that realm between semi-sweet & semi-dry, but a very pleasant drink in total.

A: The beer pours a light copper/dark amber color with a finger of off-white head.

S: There is a touch of skunk on the nose, but I only get it at first. Otherwise, good sweet bread, caramel, and toffee aromas. Nice toasted malts along with some floral hops and a touch of spice.

T: A smooth sweetness to the beer which is not overwhelming. Spiced bread, toffee, and caramel are all present along with some floral and spicy noble hops to balance the beer out. Very minimal bitterness, perhaps just a touch on the finish.

M: Medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation.

O: It’s not my favorite Oktoberfest, but it’s not bad, and it’s readily available, so not a terrible choice.

Served in a Walter Payton shaker pint glass.

Yet another O-Fest finally getting sampled this year. Took me long enough... It pours a clear light auburn topped by a finger of dusty off-white foam. The nose comprises caramel, rye bread, light orange peel, light cashew, and a touch of toasted wheat. The taste is a cleaner version of the smell, complete with sweeter caramel, slightly spicier rye, and richer orange. It's not a leap, really, but definitely a step up. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. Overall, a very solid O-Fest, one of the better ones out of Germany herself.

On tap in half liter mugs at a German Restaurant that I tried for the first time today. Deep golden amber with a huge fluffy white head that survived for most of the night. Smells of malt in spades. Bready caramel and burnt sugar mixed with just enough earthy floral hops to keep it from being sweet. Tastes is rich and malty. Melanoids mixed with bread and grain with a spicy floral hop bite that keeps everything in check. Medium body and carbonation level, rich sweet malt y mouthfeel. Light and easy to drink these went down quite quickly and paired well with my meal.

The Spaten Oktoberfest is pretty good. The beer pours copper color with an inch of white foam. Some lacing is noted. The smell has a bit of an acidic smell, with a malty scent. I found it kind of bland. The taste is similar to the smell unfortunately. That touch of astringent bite makes this just an odd beer. There is a noted malt flavor and some sweetness. the beer is drinkability is decent. Medium bodied, with minimal carbonation. Overall, surprised this was such an underwhelming Marzen. Price is reasonable but there are much better options for this type.

Thanks to wishuwerebeer for sharing a couple of these with me. Poured from a 12oz green bottle into a standard pint glass. This brew appears a perfectly clear light copper color with a finger and a half of lightly tanned head. The cap quickly fades down to a thin lacing across the top despite rising bubbles of carbonation. A light swirl agitates more bubbles back to the top and forms some spotty lacework on the glass.

The smell of this brew has a pleasant caramel malt sweetness balanced quite well with a touch of faint herbal to citrus hops. Sulfur is noted slightly throughout. As the brew warms up, a bit of buttery bread comes forward.

The taste is initially mostly caramel malt sweetness, a bit like toffee and toasty bready grain. Some buttery diactyl is noted throughout the experience. Faint herbal hops and a light touch of warming alcohol across the back contrast the initial malty sweet character.

This is a medium to light bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. The alcohol is present throughout this brew with an expected level from the nearly 6% abv. It is a fairly decent take on the style that is easy drinking. Worth giving a try for sure when it is in season but nothing to go out of your way for.

I'm sure having this one on tap makes all the difference in the world, but I will start by saying that this one tasted so fresh off the draught. Appearance: Pours a copper with an off white cream head not much lacing going on seems a bit thin. Aroma: Sweet caramel with nice touches of German hops, slightly roasted malts in the nose very nice. Tste: Clean with a substantial amount of hop bitterness for an Oktoberfest smooth slightly harsh caramel malt tones one of the better fresher examples of a German O-fest yet. Mouthfeel: Lighter body but still decent texture and perfect carbonation. Drinkability: Very drinkable not too heavy or syrupy but very refreshing could picture myself siding with this one at the tents in Munich.

Appearance - Pours a light amber color with a decent head. Slight lacing.

Smell - Smells of sweet malt.

Taste - Lots of caramel malt taste slightly sweet which is how I prefer my Octoberfest's.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied.

Overall - One of my favorites the fresher the better as always.

Pours a deep brownish amber with 1/2" of bubbly, foamy head that quickly fades to a thin lacing. This beer smells of faint malts and yeast, but mostly smells like the Spaten Munich Helles. The taste is caramel malts with a faint sweetness, very very faint fruitiness, and a smooth creaminess. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth, and lightly carbonated.

From a German brewer, this is disappointing. Smells like a euro pale lager and the taste is one dimensional. It's drinkable though and you could put down several of these without knowing it.

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass. Green bottle.

Very unique looking marzen. Rusty copper orange body color, quite clear and light looking. Creamy vannilla yellow head, easily makes a good three fingers, with some quick settling down to one with a good cap. Gleaming fine small rising carbonation, cascading nice and slowly through the glass. Great looking brew.

Clean aroma, slightly mineral, luckily no skunking detected. Very subtle touches of toffee like malt and caramel, even some hints of nutty walnut skin without the tannic dryness sense coming. A bit subdued but also a bit complex and fun to explore on the nose.

Palate is exceptionally basic and more exceptionally balanced. Light toffee and minerals on first sip, even a bit nutty like the nose hints at. Mid palate comes with lightest brown sugar and very faint banana. Aftertaste really washes away more of the banana and sweetness bringing in light dryness of nut and clove qualities. Rinses through the palate quickly, but fills with excellent airy flavors. Touches crispness almost but manages a bock like lightness to boot.

A real good classic Marzen, light on the taste, but drinks so well and easily.
